I’m taking the day off today and I’m using this post as a kind of Facebook experiment. The column I posted yesterday, “You used to have to do something significant to get death threats,” got only 24 “likes” on my FB page. Typically, a “slow” column will receive 60 to 70 likes, a “good” column will get over a hundred, and a really “popular” column will get upwards of 300.
I think the reason yesterday’s column didn’t do very well on FB was because it had “death threats” in the title. Facebook has an algorithm that takes certain posts, apparently based on the subjects of their titles, and doesn’t put them in the newsfeed. I’ve had posts with “Trump” in the title be consigned to the newsfeed trash heap. Any post with a reference to any sort of violence doesn’t make it, either.
So today I’m posting this column with a benign, even happy, title, and Tracy’s stunning photo of one of our many sunrises here. And then I’m taking the rest of the day off. Cheers, all!
Well, I loved the death-threat column, but I would've headlined it, I'll Kill You if You Disagree With This Column, Motherfucker!
Don't be put be put off by the scoreboard, Mr. Truscott. Sometimes it is enough to just be in the game.
Enjoy your day off.
