I'm sure "Old TJ" would be very proud of his descendant. Your writing helps keep the true meaning of the 1st Amendment alive, unlike others who desecrate it for their own nefarious purposes. Health and Happiness to you and your family!
Happy holidays to all. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. Here’s a Hanukkah song to carry forward. https://youtu.be/h1cRXgDFiSs
Lucian, same to you, and Tracy! And by the way, I keep that same bust of Jefferson on the credenza in my office. As you say, he was not without his faults, but he helped make America the promising place that it is – and hopefully – always shall be!
And who among us is without faults. But we continue to muddle through on the path he and our other founding fathers laid out for us despite our own faults.
From Reno to Lucian Truscott and members of this marvelous community all the best for a wild exciting and memorable year. Somewhere in the distance Thomas Jefferson is laughing with delight.
I did not subscribe to this wonderful column when Charlottesville was infested by "Nice Nazis" wearing white Izods and khakis early on during TFG's reign of ignorance and terror.
Old TJ must have been horrified along with you and your fellow descendants.
I'll tell you what my reaction is. About time. The United States of America has no business commemorating the traitors to the nation who quit the Army and tried to overthrow the U.S. in the name of slavery. I was disgusted by all the confederate imagery when I was a cadet, and I'm proud of the army for finally putting this stuff where it belongs -- behind a closed door or in a museum that tells the real story of what people like Lee did.
I was certain that would be your response. I do feel there should be a museum that tells the real story, so that cadets will learn the true horror of that time in our history, rather than being placed behind closed doors. Sadly, out of sight, out of mind.
Recently read about renaming military posts. For example, Ft. Benning, Georgia, where I lived my Senior year in high school, has been renamed in honor of Hal Moore of We Were Soldiers fame.
Wishing you and your readers a meaningful holiday with loved ones, and a hopeful new year. Time to reflect now, and then to return to the protection of our humanistic and democratic values shortly.

Frohe Weihnachten u. Gutes Rutsch ins Neue Jahr 🎉 🎁
Das stimmt, ---- but the lyrics of the Christmas song we used to sing in my German classes were never ever more ironic:
"Leise rieselt der Schnee, Still und starr ruht der See..."
"Softly falls the snow," Gott im Himmel!!!

Just read this in NY Times. As a graduate of West Point, I would love to read your comments on this.

Spot on!
Our history didn’t teach us that they were traitors but that is exactly what they were.
Recently read about renaming military posts. For example, Ft. Benning, Georgia, where I lived my Senior year in high school, has been renamed in honor of Hal Moore of We Were Soldiers fame.
Thankfully it's "old TJ" and not old DJT!! Be thankful for huge blessings!
And thank you Lucien for all your wonderful work. You're the best!
Simply beautiful sentiments — thank you!
