We have to rally, resist and fight for our democracy. April 5 is a nationwide day of protest. Other law firms are resisting. We must support them.

The next big battle is one our blue state Governors must fight and they need to get out in front of this one. As early as the 20th of next month, trump may start efforts to justify ‘federalizing’ state national guard forces. This the likely route to creating his own private army. Much has been written lately on how US military units would never obey illegal orders. This is true but also largely irrelevant. National guard troops are supposed to be under the command of state governors but If trump gets his way with federalizing national guard troops, he will be able to mix and match units and leadership into whatever configuration he likes. Like so much in the MAGA project it comes down to tempting people, especially young men, to discover their worst selves and then insulating them from the real world. Once in in the units, young men may be surrounded by those following low impulses, teasing them forward with the transgressive thrill of immigrant persecution. Praising them for their loyalty, trump can build a force only answerable to him, that will follow any order. This is the road Trump will try to take to establish his own private army, the nightmare scenario.

This is why Canadians see any step towards federalizing of US national guard troops as a presage to invasion. It is also why democrats especially democratic governors need to act quickly to preempt Trump from having this unregulated power. If we don’t head this off, we won’t get another chance.
