Ginni Thomas is up to her kitten heels in the right-wing fever swamp

And she is so, so happy about it

It’s almost as if she went looking for it, isn’t it, all the attention Ginni Thomas is getting lately?  It’s actually easier to start with what she hasn’t been up to:  for example, there isn’t any evidence that she was in contact with Enrique Terrio, the leader of the Proud Boys, in the weeks after Donald Trump lost the election in November of 2020.  But we haven’t yet heard from the Department of Justice about all the interviews they’ve done with members of the Proud Boys who have chosen to testify against their compatriots, including Dear Leader Terrio.  It doesn’t appear that she spent any quality time with Stewart Rhodes, the eye-patch-sporting founder of the Oath Keepers, currently residing in a Washington lock-up awaiting trial on multiple charges of seditious conspiracy for attempting to overthrow the U.S. government on 1/6.

But Ginni certainly made the rounds of the more buttoned-down members of the Stop the Steal movement.  She started sending text messages to White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows on November 5, only two days after election day, encouraging Meadows not to let Trump concede losing the election.   “TRUMP STING w CIA Director Steve Pieczenik, The Biggest Election Story in History,” she wrote Meadows, referring to a YouTube video posted by Pieczenik, a far-right nutcase who made himself famous claiming that the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut was a “false flag” operation, the deaths of the school children were faked, and they were in fact still alive.  “I hope this is true; never heard anything like this before, or even a hint of it. Possible???” Ginni wrote.

Thomas went on to refer to a conspiracy theory that was just beginning to make the rounds of right-wing websites: “Biden crime family & ballot fraud co-conspirators (elected officials, bureaucrats, social media censorship mongers, fake stream media reporters, etc) are being arrested & detained for ballot fraud right now & over coming days, & will be living in barges off GITMO to face military tribunals for sedition.”

By November 10, Thomas was texting Meadows this: “Help This Great President stand firm, Mark!!!...You are the leader, with him, who is standing for America’s constitutional governance at the precipice. The majority knows Biden and the Left is attempting the greatest Heist of our History.”  (Capitalization and usage from the actual text.)

Ginni Thomas sent 29 text messages (that we know of) to Meadows between November 3 and January 6.  It is not known if she exchanged more texts with Meadows, but not long after he turned over more than 2,000 of his texts to the 1/6 Committee, he announced that he was ceasing his cooperation with the committee and has not provided any further material.

But Thomas didn’t stop there.  She exchanged a number of emails with Trump attorney John Eastman, the architect of the “Mike Pence can throw the election for us” movement, who was shown in committee testimony last week to not have even believed his own theory about how Pence could refuse to certify electoral ballots and declare Trump winner of the election on January 6.  Yes, the same John Eastman who plead the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times during his interview with the 1/6 Committee and after his Pence plan fell apart sent an email to Mark Meadows with this pitch: “I believe I should be on the pardon list, if that is still in the works.”

The latest news on the Ginni front is that after 1/6 Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson announced that he had sent a letter to her requesting an interview, she told the conservative website The Daily Caller, “I look forward to talking to them.  I can’t wait to clear up misconceptions.”

Busy, busy, busy, that Ginni.  She is a member of the super-secretive Council for National Policy (CNP), an umbrella organization of arch-conservative right-wing and fundamentalist Christian outfits that includes the Federalist Society, the Heritage Foundation, the Family Research Council, the Alliance Defending Freedom, the Liberty Council, and Turning Point, USA.  The CNP refuses to publish its membership list, but a leak of their list in 2020 showed that Ginni’s fellow members include such right-wing luminaries as Ed Meese, Oliver North, Steve Bannon, Kellyanne Conway, and Blackwater founder Eric Prince. 

When she wasn’t emailing Eastman and texting Meadows, Ginni Thomas was sending emails to no less than 29 state representatives from the state of Arizona encouraging them to throw out the electors won by Joe Biden and issue instead “a clean slate of Electors” for Donald Trump.  She told the Arizona legislators they “had the power to fight back against fraud,” without listing any evidence of fraud.  Arizona would subsequently conduct three recounts of the November 2020 election, including one by hand, and go through a so-called “forensic audit” of the election by the state Senate which ended up awarding Biden more than 200 votes than he had achieved before the “audit” was conducted. 

No fraud of any kind was found, even by the privately-funded forensic audit, even though they had checked allegations that the Chinese had loaded down the state with fake mail-in ballots that were made from paper containing “bamboo.”

But the most exclusive club Ginni Thomas sports membership in is wife of a Supreme Court justice, her husband, Clarence Thomas, who distinguished himself most recently by being the sole dissenting vote in a decision by the court not to hear an appeal by John Eastman of an order commanding him to turn over emails to the 1/6 Committee.  The emails in question, it turned out, included the ones between Thomas and Eastman revealed by the 1/6 Committee last week.  So Clarence Thomas not only joined in a decision by the court involving his own wife, he dissented from its 8-1 decision that revealed his wife’s emails to a lawyer working for Donald Trump who was openly attempting to overturn the election for the former president.

The Wall Street Journal published an editorial on Friday alleging that the 1/6 Committee had been busy leaking information about the Ginni Thomas emails “to hurt Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.” 

See, that’s the thing about being a member of one of the most exclusive clubs in the world:  If Ginni Thomas is criticized for her political activism on behalf of conservative causes, the right-wing screams bloody murder that just because she’s married to a member of the Supreme Court doesn’t mean that she doesn’t enjoy the same political rights of any other American.  But then when she gets in hot water for exercising those political rights by trying to overthrow a presidential election, anybody who complains is just using poor Ginni to trash her husband.

It’s heads they win, tails you lose when you contend with the tag-team of Ginni and Clarence.
