Dred Scott
I got my COVID booster and a flu shot yesterday, and I was resting on the couch recovering with MSNBC on the TV when it happened: a savage blast of stories about right-wing loons, one story after another back to back on the news. First up was the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, a gaggle of white-haired white supremacists down in New Orleans who last week overturned the stay of the Neanderthal Texas abortion law imposed by a Federal District court just two days previously. This caused the Justice Department to file an appeal of that decision with the Supreme Court, which of course just a month ago did the same thing the 5th Circuit just did – allowed the Texas law to take effect despite a challenge to its Constitutionality. Don’t you get the feeling that these right-wing judges have just been sitting back waiting for this opportunity to strip women of the right to abortion and send them to the back alley?
After that came yet another story from the Raise Your Arm in Salute state about the school district in Southlake Texas, near Dallas, telling teachers that if they taught from a book about the Holocaust, they had to teach from a book with an “opposing view” of the Holocaust. That’s a good one, huh? Kind of like if you’re going to teach about global warming, you have to include global cooling, too, because…freedom, or something. The story quoted one teacher from the school district asking, “How do you oppose the Holocaust?” Well, in Texas they are demanding that teachers find a way and that children be taught “both sides” of the murder of six million Jews by Nazis.
Next up was a big story about the man who claims to be “Q,” the founder of the QAnon conspiracy that pushes the lying nonsense that the Democratic Party is a cabal of pedophiles engaged in the sex trafficking of children. I didn’t catch his name, but I didn’t need to. This lunatic has decided to run for Congress in Arizona. Right there on the screen was a photograph of him posing with Kari Lake, the Trump-endorsed Republican candidate for governor of that state in 2022. There’s a slate for you, huh? Two liars pushing lies to other liars about lies they’re finding new ways to tell lies about right now, even as we speak.
I reached for the remote and turned off the TV. I feel weak and fatigued enough from the shots I got yesterday, but watching the news was like getting beaten over the head with a two-by-four. Sitting there staring at the black screen, I was reminded of a story I saw on one of the MSNBC shows yesterday. They interviewed a Black woman who was lamenting the fact that more than 50 years after the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act were passed, we’re having to fight the same battles all over again because the Republican Party keeps trying to chip away at the racial progress made in the last century. It’s their new Lost Cause. They just don’t give up.
I couldn’t take another minute of it. I can’t keep up with these maniacs. I just can’t. What’s next? The Republican-dominated Supreme Court upholds Dred Scott v Sanford, permitting the ownership of slaves and stripping Black Americans of their citizenship and protection of the Constitution?
Let me tell you, I’m beginning to think anything is possible with the Republican Party and the gang of white supremacist judges they’ve flooded the Federal Courts with.
If you’re as tired of this crap as I am and you want to help, subscribe for $60 a year or $5 a month. These lunatics have to be beaten, and I’m writing stuff to do it every day.
There was one bright beacon of hope and light in the last 24 plus hours. McCabe's retirement and back pay taken away the day before he would have vested in his FBI retirement was restored. The unique and profound cruelty of Donald Trump the Revenge Monster and Jeff Sessions, the Ultimate Racist and Hate Prick were undone. I'm trying to take solace in that.
I remember, decades ago, a woman I knew making this observation: "There are three subjects on which there is only one side; the other side is morally worthless nonsense. Those three things are slavery, the Holocaust and abortion." Exactly correct. There is NO possible defense for slavery, NO "other side" that justifies the Holocaust, and NO value whatsoever to beliefs that deny women control over their own bodies.
And yet, thanks to the "religious" right, this country seems to be edging toward the idea that all three of these subject DO have another side that deserves equal time; obviously, on the subject of abortion, they have already made a terrifying amount of progress in demonizing and criminalizing abortion, those who perform abortions, and those who undergo them. The Texas school district that wanted "both sides" of the Holocaust taught in schools has, I believe, withdrawn that directive, but the mere fact that some people felt justified in putting that proposal forward is mind-boggling! And Lucian is not just indulging in overblown rhetoric when he wonders if some of the GOP are thinking of ways to reinstitute slavery. They aren't going to say it out loud in public, but we can all be sure that there are members of GOP who devoutly WISH that would happen.
