There are threats of a wider war in the Middle East after Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian sent a diplomatic message to Israel through the U.N. envoy to the Middle East, Tor Wennesland, today in Beirut. Iran told the U.N. ambassador that they don’t want the conflict between Israel and Hamas to grow and said they would help with the release of hostages who were kidnapped by Hamas on Saturday. But Amir-Abdollahian warned darkly that Iran has “red lines” that include a planned Israeli ground offensive into Gaza that could kick off at any moment.
Iran is known to back the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon. Amir-Abdollahian had met with Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah earlier in the day. Amir-Abdollahian told reporters in Beirut that Israel must "stop the crimes against civilians in Gaza — because it might be too late in a few hours."
Israel’s bombardment of Hamas targets in Gaza has not let up. Preparations on the ground for invasion with Israeli tanks, artillery, armored personnel carriers and infantry lined up from one end of the Gaza strip to the other ready to go.
The threat of Hezbollah involvement in the war from the north is a real one. Estimates of the number of Iran-supplied rockets and missiles Hezbollah could fire into Israel run from 100,000 to 150,000, about ten times the number of missiles Hamas is thought to have stockpiled before they started the war on Saturday. Some of the Hezbollah missiles are known to have the range to hit Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
U.N. Middle East Ambassador Wennesland called Israel’s national security adviser and relayed Iran’s message late today.
In the estimation of practically everyone, Iran’s involvement in the war between Israel and Hamas is a true nightmare scenario.
Netanyahu has been itching for a war with Iran for years. If sending the IDF into Gaza is going to spark it, he will be sure to do it. His time as Israeli leader is done. The only question is how many people are going to be killed before he steps aside and lets cooler heads work out a peace agreement.
Does anyone see the hand of Putin here? And the fact that 45 gave away so many intelligent secrets to him? There’s some bigger reason why the Israeli and US intelligence fell apart so badly. And there is a really bad conflict heading our way at a time where a military is crippled to a large degree because of Tommy Turberville
