In a kind of death-spiral of desperation, Donald Trump has been posting “truths” — yep, that’s what he’s calling his posts on his social media network, Truth Social — becoming more and more unhinged as the time of his indictment nears. His call to “Protest! Take our country back” failed to produce massive crowds of MAGA’s in New York City. Journalists covering the small gathering outside the Criminal Courts Building a few moments ago reported that Marjorie Taylor Greene couldn’t be heard over the noise made by counter-demonstrators, despite the fact that she was using a megaphone. One person called out to George Santos, who was in the scrum surrounding Greene, that he should have shown up in drag.
In short, Trump’s second attempt to assemble mobs of supporters in the streets of New York on the day of his indictment has completely failed, which is not much of a surprise when you consider that New Yorkers, the people who have known him best over the last 50 years, just plain hate him.
Trump’s “truths” are attracting attention online, and for good reason. As he faces indictment for paying off porn star Stormy Daniels to keep her quiet in the closing days of the 2016 election, Trump is lashing out everywhere.
Here is a sampling from last night’s and this morning’s ongoing meltdown:
“Wow! District Attorney Bragg just illegally LEAKED the various points, and complete information, on the pathetic Indictment against me. I know the reporter and so, unfortunately, does he. This means that he MUST BE IMMEDIATELY INDICTED. Now, if he wants to really clean up his reputation, he will do the honorable thing and, as District Attorney, INDICT HIMSELF. He will go down in Judicial history, and his Trump Hating wife will be, I am sure, very proud of him!”
Trump appears to have been sent into another tailspin entirely by yesterday’s report in the Washington Post that Special Prosecutor Jack Smith has been interviewing Trump employees, lawyers, and others about alleged obstruction in the stolen classified documents case. (Much more on this later today or tomorrow.)
Trump posted: "Speaking of LEAKS, Special ‘Prosecutor’ Jack Smith (What did his name used to be?) leaked massive amounts of information to The Washington ComPost. This is illegal, and I assume this Radical Left Lunatic, much to the chagrin of his Trump Hating wife and family, will be PROSECUTED? Biden is guilty of Obstruction, I am not!"
Trump followed that up with: “When will they be looking at the Biden Documents, many of which were brought to CHINATOWN, and then sent to Boston. Is this why China paid him and Hunter Millions of Dollars? What about the Classified Docs laying on the floor of his unsecured garage (with the Corvette!), or at Penn, or the, get this, 1,850 BOXES in Delaware that they REFUSE to give up. I followed the Presidential Records Act, he didn’t. He OBSTRUCTED, I DIDN’T. Trump hating Prosecutor Jack Smith, a lunatic, should ‘GET BIDEN!’”
It’s going to be interesting to hear what he has to say after he returns to Mar a Lago and speaks at 8 p.m. Will he read his promised speech from a teleprompter, or will he just open up on D.A. Bragg and Special Prosecutor Smith with an impromptu blast from his flailing id?
We’ll see. But Judge Juan Merchan may have something to say about Trump’s constant attacks on Alvin Bragg and his wife (!) in court this afternoon.
What strikes me is that Trump sounds like a man off his meds. I've dealt with people like this on the other side as a lawyer, and it never goes well for them in the end because they're all bluster and multi-paragraph email, text, and voicemail accusations against their ex, me, and the system in general until they get in front of the judge, where they have nothing to say because even nuts know that if you word-vomit that crap in court a judge is putting you in the pokey overnight to calm down. I'm watching the current proceedings with keen interest and a lot of popcorn. I don't anticipate getting a lot of work done today.
Old lawyers will tell you that when you have the law on your side, argue the law, when you have the facts on your side, argue the facts, and when you don't have either the law or the facts pound on the table. This must be what you do when you don't have the law, the facts or a table. Good to know.
