Richard, it's my birthday net week - I'll take this as an early present! Thank you SO much. Can't wait to settle down with this, a comforter and a nice cup of cocoa!
Absolutely, he's in deeeeeeep trouble and he knows it, desperation has set in. I don't listen to the bull shit too much and just counter that we are on the right path. I'm also a poll worker in a red state, but a purple county of the state of educated citizens and fucking around with the ballots isn't going to happen. Elections are secure and interference by ICE won't be tolerated. Hell, you can't even wear any political affiliation on your clothing as a worker, and you can't interfere with the voting process inside or out. I'm not at all worried and I am betting that turnout will be overwhelming and not in "R's" favor. I say, don't despair, bring it on and vote.
In California, no one, poll worker, voter, or observer, can walk in to a polling place or stand within a hundred feet of a polling place wearing any partisan buttons or clothing. We take down any campaign signs within a hundred feet of a polling place.
Thank you, Lucian! It's so bad for me then I can't even listen to him on TV. Whenever I hear his voice I want to mute the channel. I get infuriated. Everything the man says and does is prevarication, gaslighting, deflection, and ridiculous hyperbole. I was raised to never wish anyone ill, but for this individual I must make an exception. He has done more to damage my country and the world than anyone in my lifetime! He has destroyed countless lives and killed thousands of innocent people indirectly! He is a living plague, a disease which must be eradicated! We must stand fast! We must stand together, and trust in the Almighty! Dear Lord, confusion and death to our enemies!
I absolutely cannot stand to see or hear Trump. I try to watch his speeches just to keep up with the latest ranting in order to be informed, but I can only go for about a minute. Itʻs excruciating, heʻs a blathering, demented idiot
I shoot him the finger and place my hand so my finger blocks his face, I’ve been doing it for years. I let my hand rest this evening to observe his face at the prayer breakfast, he looked like shit, the last time I saw his face he was at Davos, he looked like shit then too.
While I agree with much of what you say BG, I’m just about finished with “Guns at Last Light” that takes the fight against the Nazis from D-Day until the wars end. In light of what I have learned I would say the insipid orange turd is just a punk, he has of course brought great harm to countless lives but nothing on the scale of what his hero Hitler did, or our erstwhile ally Stalin. In our system he is on a leash, and I grant you it’s a long one, but our electoral process is going to yank on it hard in Nov. His tariffs are causing harm to small businesses all over the country and they are the nations employment engine. People of every persuasion are very unhappy with what he’s doing with ICE, who shot 2 people to death in front of the whole country, neither of whom posed any threat to the killers. Masked killers stalking our streets is not OK, not now, not next week, not next year. The state senate seat in one of the reddest districts in Texas flipping resoundingly to an underfunded democrat is another sign of how the country feels. I loathe the bastard 🤬🤬🤬
"our electoral process is going to yank on it hard in Nov"
Yes, he's a punk - but he has some very cunning people pulling his strings in the shadows. They are already working on how to fix the elections in his favor.
Your prerogative, Bruce. You called me Chief which I find amusing because it was my nickname in my fraternity days at college. Back in those days I was definitely an Indian not a Chief! Since I left the Army years ago, I am definitely back to being an Indian!!!
I told my husband (Gary), "That's what the mute button is for!" I try to keep informed, but I can't even stand hearing his voice, especially when he softens it to try to gaslight and bs people with his outlandish lies. BH
Unless God steps in to strike T-Rump down, the only way to weather his lunacy for the next 35 months is going to be by taking both Houses of Congress away from the GOP. Impeachment is easy to have follow = not just once, but several times as his excesses continue. They will.
To do it, we have to make sure our relatives and friends are all registered to vote. This has to be done in EVERY state. Even in "blue" states we need to make sure progressives are elected.
In my 9th Congressional District (Illinois) there is only one clearly qualified candidate: a state
Senator. She's running against a 26 year old Tik Tok influencer who is pretty but doesn't have the intellect of an AOC - and the Mayor of Evanston who has let the schools there go to hell. I'll do all I can to bring a few hundred to the polls to vote for the strong candidate.
I only hope people who read this post will try to do the same in their respective Districts. By doing so, we'll be in a position to impeach not only Bone Spurs, but also bastards like Miller, Bondi, Lutnick, Hegseth, Gabbard, Noem, Homan, Blanche - the whole lot of them. Each impeachment will bring us closer to conviction as the cost of groceries continues to rise, as there are fewer construction crews, CNA's in hospitals, as inflation goes further and further out of control.
"She's running against a 26 year old Tik Tok influencer who is pretty"
If I could be granted one wish, it would be that all voters under 25 were given one day of what they'll feel like and know at 70; and one of the most important bits of that knowledge is how unimportant personal beauty is in your life.
Donald Nathan, what's the secret behind your plan to "bring a few hundred to the polls to vote for the strong candidate"? Are you going to pay bribes, or something else? I write out of curiosity.
You have to be kidding. I don’t have to bribe people to come to the polls. I’m known in my community, and I would like to think that a lot of people respect me. I go to their doors and I talk with them. Some people call me a precinct captain, but I’m just a neighbor. I ask if I can help them to come to the polls if they are elderly like me. I let them know that I can make arrangements to see to it that they are taken there and returned home. If they are receptive, I ask them if they will let me talk with their children and friends.
Of course, they know that I will help to find teenagers who will shovel the snow off of their driveways to rake leaves in the fall. They know that my wife and I donated a 65 foot Norway spruce as the Christmas tree for Arlington Heights.
I grew up in Evanston and attended all of the schools K-12. Biss inherited a mess with way too many elementary schools and unfortunately, at least one recent corrupt superintendent. It’s very sad to see schools close, but I received an excellent education (with far fewer schools in the system). I’m no longer in the 9th congressional district but it sounds like it’s down to Biss vs. Fine. Best wishes on your choice!
Biss has done the best he can to appease the Evanston African American populace with reparations that I think has caused tremendous economic harm to the rest of the community. I could offer other criticisms, but it serves no good purpose.
Kat, the 26 year old, is basically an antisemite. In a district that has over 150,000 Jews, she really isn’t gonna fly
The only sensible choice seems to be Laura Fine.
My youngest daughter and my grandchildren live in the southwest end of Evanston. When iICE agents conducted a raid at Chute middle school, Biss just twiddled his thumbs. I could give you other examples, but it serves no good purpose here.
I remember that ICE incident. I attended middle school at Chute and was frequently in the intersection where it happened, so it really hit home for me. My impression was that Biss did a great job calling ICE out. I get most of my information at https://evanstonroundtable.com/ these days. Again that particular incident was very emotional for me. I’m not arguing with you about Biss, just saying my impression was different from yours. I am very proud of Evanston for instituting Reparations, but of course it comes with a cost. As an aside, Evanston had some of the most creative campaign yard signs against Piggy - completely hilarious and truly clever! Your daughter made a great choice to raise her children in Evanston.
It depends on where in the 9th you live. We are in Arlington Heights, the very farthest north west end of the district. You might be somewhere on the north side of Chicago or in Evanston or Skokie. I can’t answer your question as posed
Right on! But I think it is vitally important that we keep the upcoming elections this fall in mind. We need to spend our energy supporting all Democratic candidates. We know how bad Trump et al are, and we see the crimes that are being committed. He seems to weasel out of all attempts to be reined in. Are we not just banging our heads against the wall??
I want this to be the truest thing you ever wrote, Lucian! I mean, it is true — all of it, and gorgeously said! But I want it to stay true, day after day, for the next six months, while everything this awful man has TRIED to put in place in the last year falls apart all around him. He surrounded himself with idiots, but he does have some sneaky money-men lurking around behind the curtains. And even if he’s a lunatic, that guy Manafort did advise autocrats and fascists all around the world about how to manipulate their governments (granted, none of those governments had a long-time, high-end and sophisticated democracy like ours for generations, but still, Manafort and his schemes are a bit scary).
But, reading this makes me feel GREAT, and I hope we all see reality here, and can hold onto it as the Trumpian house-of-cards totally collapses. There’s a lot of repair going to be needed, after the mess The Donald made. I think we’re up to it, if we can get his over-stuffed butt out of our way.
I agree with everything you just wrote. I want to believe the Constitution will hold here, he won’t be allowed to do any of the things he says he wants to do and it’s just the blabbering of a demented, old man. But it’s just so exhausting! ! !
"This is what we need more of: rational talk from rational people about reality." Absolutely agree. A reassuring column . Thanks.

Listening to the idiot's speech at The National Prayer Breakfast, of all places, was just awful!
A lightning bolt should have smited him, instantly.
"I was raised to never wish anyone ill, but for this individual I must make an exception. "
And THAT is the thing about trump that disgusts me most.
He has turned you, and me, and millions of others, into worse people.
People who were brought up not to hate and curse and rage are now forced into becoming what they never wanted to be.
I previously had no strong religious convictions - but I now firmly believe trump is the anti-christ.
I agree completely with everything you wrote except the "Dear Almighty Lord" stuff, Chief.

yes, and check your registration at Vote.org - just in case someone un-registers you (like Kemp did when he stole the election from Stacey Abrams)
My concern with impeaching Dumbass is that JD, who would become President, could run twice more for the office.
I wouldn't worry about JD, he's the antithesis of Trump, no charisma, no authenticity, and his smug superior attitude doesn't convince anybody.
We’ll probably find out.
