Well, if you've pissed off the gun nuts, then your work is done. The closest thing to "military" knowledge they have is playing Army in the woods with their camo and eye black......

Oh, and they clearly have not read you CV; probably have no idea who your grandfather was.

jeez louise, Barbara...now you're being just plain unreasonable...why would the real PATRIOTS feel the need to google someone like Lucian, whose bohemianism and leftist propagandizing render him unworthy of anything but derision, pity...you name it. it could take as long as, say, THREE minutes. three minutes less to hate things of which they know nothing.

sometimes, a little humor seems like it might function as some sort of leavening agent, but ends up not working as well as one might've hoped....

Not necessarily. I spent 14 months in Infantry combat, Lucian didn't. The pistol style the school shooter used was invented in 1892, and is the most popular civilian and military pistol type.

Expand full comment

Former Special Forces Weapons Sergeant here, you were dead on calling it military grade.

Expand full comment

All semiauto pistols are "military grade". A meaningless term.

Expand full comment

It's all deflection. They changed the subject from a kid killing students with a weapon his parents bought him to what to call the weapon. Complete bullshit.

I was going to comment on your column yesterday but it’s too raw right now. My two precious daughters are in high school and the very thought of what happened to those beautiful children hits too close to home right now. Thank you for putting into context what the reality of the situation is. Please know you are helping so many of us with your words.

"I was military grade the day I was born in a field hospital in Fukuowka, Japan to an Infantry First Lieutenant father and a Red Cross girl mother, and driven home to our military quarters in occupied Japan in a Jeep wrapped in a GI blanket. My father was armed at the time with his Army-issue M11911 Colt .45. My mother held his Army-issue Winchester Carbine between her legs and me in her arms." Just Wow.

I *loved* that part. If only the tweeting twits knew how badly they were being skewered!

I carried a full military WW II .45 burp gun in Vietnam. Lucian chose not to go to Vietnam. He was right on that one, but I chose to go instead of going to Federal Prison.

OMG. They were carrying "military grade" weapons around an innocent child!

Expand full comment

Yeah, yeah—they love to nit pick this point and it’s purely political. My husband was special forces and he says these weapons are most certainly “military grade” —I get this sort of idiocy when I refer to the AR semiautomatics regardless of the barrel length. WTF hunts deer with with a semi automatic? A shorter barrel is used for close quarters; otherwise, it’s the same damned weapon: MILITARY GRADE. The gun nuts are so full of self-righteous indignation, they reek of bullshit. REEK.

Expand full comment

Thousands of citizens hunt deer and wild hogs with AR rifles. They simply use 5-shot magazines. Semiauto hunting rifles were made by Winchester as early as 1910 or so and in much more powerful calibers than the AR-15 uses. So, you're completely wrong.

Where do we find these fools? Well last night there were 100 at the Lincoln Memorial each wearing "Military Grade" US Combat Boots and matching uniforms. They had a marching drummer and many bystanders gave them the finger. They ended up on Memorial Bridge. They were stuck at 0300 since their bus was somehow missing. Hate to say it, but they looked exactly like Nazis in 1938. It was an incredible, scary sight. They looked stupid enough to buy a 15 year old a Sig Sauer with a bucket of ammo. Yahoo News said some of these guys are body guards for Robert Spencer. The USA is heading downhill with crazed gunmen. The good news is they are too stupid to find their Bus!!! Punks.

Lucky they're only a tiny, tiny fraction of the populace, eh? And don't use Madison Square Garden for their rallies like U.S. Nazis did in the '30's, eh?

There's always a contingent of know-nothings who cannot abide people who possess actual authoritative knowledge. These knuckleheads can't decide who they are. They want to style themselves as 'citizen militias', but without the leadership and discipline that an essential prerequisite to becoming an organized community-based fighting force. Otherwise they're bandits. These guys wouldn't even qualify as some sort of guerilla army of irregulars. They do look like the insurgents we've been at war with in the middle east and southern Asia.

well, isn't semantic hair-splitting exactly what you'd expect from a gun nut, who would predictably be hung up on said semantic hair-splitting because that small thing (to the guy writing this stooooopid shit) is somehow more important to him/her than the big thing, for which his only answer is for sure gonna be "guns don't kill people, people." except, of course, for the fact that there are (thus far) four dead kids who would certainly still be alive and having their weekends if it were not for this particular gun. has anyone else read the Michigan Mom's blog post/encomium/open letter/whatever the fuck you wanna call it to DT during the 2016 campaign? it's an interesting document. she's a fool and couldn't think her way out of any situation demanding logic, but (at THAT time...I think that since THEN, her insanity has evolved considerably, meaning that her grip on sanity has devolved. but in 2016, she claimed to have all sorts of opinions not usually held by people who present the way she does. for example, she claims to be an atheist, be pro-choice, be her version of a "liberal," except of course for her loathing "illegals who get all the stuff for free that her kids don't get, her difficulties with the "common core curriculum" that is so confusing (she has a point here...try having a kid explain the "lattice method of multiplication" and see if it makes sense...it doesn't to me) she must hire private tutors because she's not entitled to those services for HER kid. now, I worked in public schools for years and can say that, at least in NYC, all the things she claims not to have access to are, in fact, available. but DO have to acknowledge there's an issue and ASK for the help. she praises DT for being a terrible debater and public speaker because it means he's "honest." she loves that he's such a brilliantly successful businessman.... I could go on, but it's available in its entirety wherever you look for it, assuming you have the stomach to get through it. she keeps referring to herself as a realtor and discusses how important it is to be armed in that profession lest she show a house to someone with "bad intentions." good thing she's prepared to confront head-on this country's horrifying epidemic of realtor killings, about which none of us seems to be informed. she ends with real class, stating that (I'm quoting accurately enough, even if I don't have to stomach to look up her precise word order) she's been getting "fucked in the ass," but would vastly prefer being "grabbed by the pussy." and I think she was a lot saner then. her own words will, let us hope, convict her. but she's sure as shit been weighed in MY scales. and found wanting, big-time.

Expand full comment

Wow. With all those "beliefs" rattling around in her little head, no wonder she's gone over the edge. Can you imagine what that family discussed over their hamburgers? In today's WaPo, reports from the school counselors are surfacing which reveal that when they met with the parents, they gave them 48 hours to get professional help for the boy before they reported them to CPR. Those two sat there and refused help and kept their knowledge of that gift gun to themselves and thus set in motion the entire murderous tragedy. It's on her. On him. And of course, on that offspring.

Expand full comment

That's because it wasn't a "gift gun". The father kept it in his room, in his drawer. So did my father keep a loaded .45 semiauto in his drawer when I grew up. The parents obviously never thought that Sonny would steal the gun and take it to school; the kid had no previous disciplinary record. The difference was, I'm not a psycho and never touched Dad's gun.

Expand full comment

So, if the kid had carried (1) 1873 Colt replica single-action revolver in .357 Magnum caliber he couldn't have killed (4) kids? What if he'd carried (2) 1873 Colts? 12 kids down?

And these are dirt-cheap: less than $400 in many cases.

As for DT, "only the BEST people."

Since Sandy Hook, I have been unable to read about school shootings. We have long been a nation that didn’t care for its children. Perhaps if the courts can hold these two parents accountable, we can make some progress — but I am not holding my breath. As usual, your article and comment on this subject are spot on.

Expand full comment

You bet: no added cheap steel plates on school doors so shooters can't shoot their way in, no metal detectors for kids backpacks, no armed teachers. School Boards sure are cheap aren't they? With 400 million guns out there (which you're not getting back) this will happen again and again.

Consider the source of the twitter bugs who have no knowledge, understanding, or outrage that parents would arm their 15 year old son with a military grade gun and send him back to the classroom with his military grade gun in his control. They defied the principal's advice that he should not return to his class. The twitter bugs are as scary as the parents.

Expand full comment

Shouldn't have been principal's "advice" to the parents. It should have been Police, Protective Services and Community Mental Health COMMANDS to parents and their 15 year old son. No "recommendations."

So, it would have been ok if they gave him a NON-military, 15-shot 9mm Taurus, used by no military in the world?

Your words, not mine.

Expand full comment

Interesting that they would focus on the term military grade as opposed to the tragedy of the story. I suppose a Saturday night special and other cheap guns would be "civilian" grade ? Of course there is no such term that I know of. What ever the grade of a gun they all wound or kill, it's just that some guns are more accurate, more lethal.

Expand full comment

He could have used a "civilian grade" 6-shot .357 Magnum revolver with a speed loader for fast reloads.

Expand full comment

Oh, wow!, Attila, that sound very powerful. The term civilian grade as opposed to military grad would hardly apply in this case . I guess military grade is basically any weapon the military has approved of and purchases or intends to purchase or the various services,

Expand full comment

Not to mention the "Cavalry Grade" .44 blackpowder revolvers used in the 19th century.

Expand full comment

Yes, you are right. These same gun nuts will insist that there is no such thing as an assault rifle available to civilians, because an assault rifle has to be full automatic. They don't respond when I ask them who appointed them to write the dictionary.

Expand full comment

The term "assault rifle" was invented by gun control groups to make the guns sound evil.
