From yesterday’s Washington Post:
MANCHESTER, N.H. — Former president Donald Trump on Thursday praised and embraced a woman convicted of defying police orders on the U.S. Capitol grounds on Jan. 6, 2021.
“Listen, you just hang in there,” Trump told the woman, Micki Larson-Olson, who was found guilty on a misdemeanor charge of resisting police efforts to clear the grounds after the insurrection by a pro-Trump mob. “You guys are gonna be okay.”
Trump, who was campaigning here in New Hampshire, then agreed to sign the backpack she said she carried to the Capitol complex on the day of the interruption of the congressional proceedings to formally certify Trump’s loss in the 2020 election.
“I can’t tell you how much that meant to me,” Larson-Olson said when Trump returned the backpack.”
Hugging a convicted insurrectionist is the political equivalent of shaking the hand of a cop-killer and saying “good job.” At his rally on the Ellipse that day, Trump incited his supporters when he said, “We’re going to walk down to the Capitol,” and they did. Without Trump, the march to the Capitol and the subsequent breach of the building and trashing by his supporters would not have happened. If that woman and thousands of other Trump supporters just like her had not followed his orders and assaulted the Capitol on January 6, 2021, five D.C. cops would still be alive and dozens of others would not have been injured and sent to nearby hospitals.
Trump posed for photographs with the woman, who had been forced to remove the Qanon stickers and buttons from her backpack because Trump’s campaign is leery of association with the group of unhinged radicals. She was sentenced to 180 days in jail and served 161 of them for him. She is one of his people. She voted for him. The Post said she drove 30 hours from her home in Abilene, Texas, to attend the Trump rally, and when she couldn’t get in, waited for him at a nearby diner, the Red Arrow, where campaigning politicians frequently stop to meet and talk to voters.
“President Trump, will you please sign my Trump backpack that I carried up to Jan. 6?” the Post reported the woman shouted to him from the crowd inside the diner. “I went to jail for 161 days for Jan. 6. I’m an Iraq War veteran.”
Trump called out loudly to the crowd, “Patriots, I hear the woman. It’s terrible what they’ve done to Jan. 6.” As he signed her backpack and handed her the Trump-branded felt pen he used, he said, “You just take care of yourself. You’ve been through too much. You’re going to wind up being happy.”
That man is running for President. He leads Ron DeSantis by 37 points, who hasn’t announced yet but is clearly running in the Republican primary. He is defending convicted felons who assaulted the Capitol on Jan. 6, and the crowds love him for it. He is an insurrectionist. He will stop at nothing to get back in power. He’s a dictator in waiting, not a conservative Republican, but a radical. The assault on the Capitol is his platform. He’s calling convicted criminals like the woman at the New Hampshire diner patriots. They’re his voters. He loves them and they love him.
This makes me heartsick. I’m so frustrated with the slow pace of our justice system right now. I feel like if it had moved with more haste, we wouldn’t be saddled with an amoral, low-life insurrectionist running for the office of President of the United States, and his followers would have been left to at least question the lies they were told. But, here we are.
