Right. Agree with your thought that this is how Hitler started, annexing Sudetenland and Austria for very similar reasons. Then Poland. Agree with you completely. Throw in the Baltic states, etc. Once NATO is pricked... This is how WW1 started - interlocking treaties. We now have NATO. Same deal. This could quickly become a pan-European war. Amazing how Putin's phrasing about "consequences such as you've never seen" sounds a lot like our former President. That's language he would have used. Sounds like Putin was studying him.

And/or Putin was feeding tRump. My fear is those nukes in the hands of a soul-less madman

Exactly. Waiting for the attack by the Poles…

Hitler with nukes, yes. And Ukraine with nuclear power plants that are not exactly built to US standards. All very vulnerable to attack. NATO needs to wake up and smell the coffee.

If you haven’t seen the BBC’s excellent 3 part series on the Rise of the Nazi’s - it progresses through the late 1930’s to show you the historical and political maneuvering that took Hitler to power - basically complete with questioning elections and stacking / bullying the police and courts via the unofficial “storm troopers” to the gestapo and SS. Mirroring the Trump play book to today. Donald isn’t smart enough to do anything original.

There is an excellent article written by a Moscow correspondent that points at the oil / energy economics and assuring market access plus stuffing the Kremlin vaults for the “next” round that is driving a lot of this maniac’s bud.

I’m fairly convinced that Estonian and Polish societal memories are still fresh enough that as Lucian points out become the litmus test on how calculated or insane this becomes.

Lucian - a gift is in route - we know this is work - and of real value - it is you at your very best.

I hope others join me.

Yet Tucker Carlson and his GOP lackeys see nothing wrong with the invasion or (apparently) with violent toppling of democratically-elected governments. All in support of the concept of brutal dictatorship. What a world.

Putin's nuclear enhanced playbook. The unthinkable is reality.

And don't forget in Trump's eyes he is a genius.

That's because Trump wants to be Putin.

I agree.....the frightening thing is there are elements in this country as we well know who would be happy to install Trump as dictator. And can you imagine the man with unlimited power? He'd emulate Putin for sure. No more criticism of him would be allowed and no peaceful protests. We can omly guess what he'd do to his perceived enemies.

Sanctions are bullshit. Every non-citizen Russian should be forced to leave the U.S. if they own property or assets here those assets should be frozen until this crap stops. Trump's relentless criticism of NATO, undermining of free societies (including ours), love for Putin paved the way for this. What's next? probably China seizing the opportunity to take Taiwan.

I have a fantasy, much along the lines of a movie I once watched: to get a small band of the most expert assassins to go around the world and take out all the dictators who are plaguing us. That would be Putin, Assad, Bolsanaro, Xi Jinping and any others who have the kind of mad power inherent in this world.

It would have to be simultaneously executed and done within 24 hours.

I guarantee you not only would the world be a better place, we might even save ourselves from nuclear destruction.

Of course it would be a economic disaster, but it sure would beat being annihilated by a guy who has a small penis and a huge ego stoked by criminality.

Of course this does not solve our problem right now, but do you think we (the ordinary people) really have any power to do anything?

You can't be that naive. We can protest, argue, write well written editorials and posts but never get things done. My fantasy is just that along with anyone else's.

That's for our 'superiors' to do, and we're essentially helpless. But we do have to trust Biden to make the right moves-tell ya what, I trust him a whole hell of a lot more than I do that orange fool who should be shipped off to Russia because he's nothing more than a mouthpiece for Putin.

That's treason, and he should be arrested for it. Alas, though his useless party and supporters would have a shit fit. They're no better than he is.

I do think Biden has the nerve to stand Putin down. This is the scenario we all thought we'd gotten past since the Cuban missile crisis.

I remember that and it's terrifying to know it could very well happen again.

God help us all.

PS-remember Hitler's downfall was expanding too fast and going into Russia, where his army got destroyed. The same can happen to Putin, who doesn't seem to think he's capable of failure..

I hope we don’t attempt a rational approach. Sanctions seem useless. There is no logic in a madman’s actions. The possibilities and the probability make it difficult to breathe.

I'm very concerned how this will impact the US at home given how many Republicans have been cheering Putin on. The world is a very divided place and this could trigger a whole lot of unexpected and uncontrollable consequences.

All of Putin’s forces are on his western border, time to “ liberate” the oppressed eastern provinces and stop the genocide of their ethnic populations. Putin is not expecting a two front war and will know this is one reason Hitler lost.

A couple of months ago this smelled awful.

right now ukraine is lost and estonia is next.

and worse, nato´s pieces are not even on the board.

Thank you. Right on Tracy. When they show Russians protesting in Russia, they are holding signs that show Putin with the characteristic square Hitler mustache.

Hitler had popular support. Putin does not despite owning the media in Russia. He’s a czar surrounded by obedient oligarchs. If the Ukrainian forces and people inflict casualties how will the Russian people respond ? The end game has to support long and hard Ukrainian resistance and making Putin pay the price. Will he escalate if supplies are sent by nato? Delicate situation

While there is focus on this immediate crisis, don’t be fooled into thinking WE are not in immediate danger. The Wash Post reports that the new and cowardly D.A. of the SDNY has decided not to press on with the Trump investigation. THE RUSSIAN MOB GOT TO HIM. All that work, and no indictment. Two lawyers have resigned their posts.

The foot of Putin is firmly on OUR NECKS, too.
