All this is true but the real issue facing the nation is not his incredible ability to keep his name ifn front of the public but the degree of sheer apathy which allows so many Americans to either ignore his crimes (yes crimes) against our Republic while they continue to support who he is and what he stands for.

I am of the opinion the problem we will face over the next three years is not his omnipresence but such a degree of apathy by the 60% of us who say we oppose him and his adopted party. Instead of being mad as hell far too many of us simply want to ignore the power grab the GOP and the Man with No Name are engineering to make the next coup not just possible but inevitable.

And, sad to say the Democratic Party is not doing much to gin up some energy. Over the past weekend the most vocal and persuasive spokesperson for what Mr. No Mane tried to do was a Republican. Liz Cheney. She articulated what was at stake and laid out the clearest, simplest and most persuasive argument possible. Donald Trump's pushing The Big Lie and his inertia on January 6 while the Capitol was being sacked disqualifies him from running again.

Unless more of us get both angry and motivated the Man With No Name is going to be on the ballot again and if polls are correct supported by approximately 45% of those who actually get out to vote. That should scare the crap out of anyone .

Federal statute, 18 U.S. Code §1512, which says, “Whoever corruptly ... obstructs, influences, or impedes any official proceeding, or attempts to do so, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both.” A “proceeding before Congress” is included in the list of what could be an “official proceeding.”

Cocaine in the 80-90s … Adderall 2000s. That’s how. Will he be indicted? If Liz Cheney has her way, he will. She is her father’s daughter.

Hmmmmm.... perhaps there IS some advantage to her having that monster as her father.....

All humans eventually pass away but we never know when. It’s the responsibility of civil authorities to hold criminals responsible. Let’s focus on supporting US and NY Attorney Generals and the SDNY completing their work and the upcoming year of public investigation by the House select committee. Accountability in life is the goal.

Trump is just a symptom and a prime example. We live in the Kardasian Age. The post Pet Rock Age. The Age of Dumb and Dumber.

he who shall not be named will never see the inside of a courtroom, much less a jail cell.

DOJ and state AG's are too afraid of indicting a former president, worried about backlash and of setting a precedent. So instead of giving trump his just desserts, he will skate just as he has his entire life.

Our only hope is some law enforcement agency grows a pair and slaps his insurrectionist ass in jail.

I kinda have to say that it sure looks that way to me. this whole disaster would have me grinding my teeth into nothing if I hadn't already done so, years back.

Reminds me of a short newspaper story a few years ago in the hyperlocal Queens Daily Eagle, headlined, "Queens Native Impeached."

So many responses here, hope for the Big Orange Boil to die. I shudder to think that IT as a past president might be honored with lying in state in the Capitol rotunda! That is horrifying. He’ll not spend a moment in jail. All I can hope for is that, the January 6th committee and the NY Attorney General do their jobs, lance the Boil and reduce IT to an asterisk of history. There’s my dream!

The wrath of history will catch up with him, just be patent. A rash or contrived prosecution would make him a martyr.

Good to find some reality here in Lucian's essay, and not the fever-dreams so many naive people post on FB; they are all SO sure the Mango Mussolini will wind up in prison. Never. Not in a million years. Of course, my fantasy is that he'll end up like the real Mussolini-- with his mangled dead body hanging upside down from a lamppost.

We were warned!!! Kurt Eichenwald wrote a series of in depth articles before the 2016 election exposing the real trump: How the Trump Organization's Foreign Business Ties Could Upend U.S. National Security (9/14/2016); A People’s History of Donald Trump's Business Busts and Countless Victims (10/18/2016; Donald Trump’s Companies Destroyed Emails in Defiance of Court Orders(10/31/2016).

July 25, 2016 The new Yorker ran piece by Jane Myer, “The Art of the Deal” made America see Trump as a charmer with an unfailing knack for business. Tony Schwartz helped create that myth—and regrets it.

You're spot on. Believe me, standing in front of thousands of people who are applauding your every move/thought/joke/insult can be a rush. And, the rush can be addictive. I think I am in an unusual position to comment on this, as this is what I do. The trick is not to let it go any further than a thank you. But, I can see when I have watched him how he responds. I work onstage and see it happen a few feet away. It can be intoxicating. The thing is, all this man brings to the show is an idea, and they're applauding the idea because he's put himself in the position of being the messenger. The republicans have a choice coming up soon: are they going to be loyal to the Constitution or to him? Unless the democrats do something really stupid---like run Kamala against him---they can win because I believe most republicans can't stand him.

Huh??? Most Republicans??? I would be interested in how you reached this conclusion.

many rpublicans IN POWER do, in fact, despise him. but they've also hitched their wagons to what they think is his "star," so they spend all their time lying about it. the repub voters are another thing altogether...I really think they love him. how many times have we heard them on television, talking about how he was ordained by god to be president. and I betcha most of them are very happy to do away with term limits. I was terrified last year at this time and I'm terrified again.

So all those polls showing 75% of registered Republicans support him and his claim the election was stolen are rigged? The GOP is gone, gone, gone. The behavior of Republicans in both the House and Senate tell you they know how the party faithful feel.

Expand full comment

True. But the Republicans are not gone, gone, gone. I'm not talking about Congress, I'm talking about people in general. The guy at the bank. The woman running her shop. The person in the street. There's a lot of republicans out there who quietly hate this man, believe me. Congress is a mess, we all known this---on both sides. This is why voting is secret. As long as the Democrats don't go down the "stupid road" to ruin as they did with Hillary, they will stay in office. But, it's difficult to believe that they won't shoot themselves in the foot, again, and grease the way for another Trump presidency.

Mike while I would like to agree with you I believe facts say otherwise. First, how many of those Republicans say they hate Trump and then were among the 75 million who voted for him? Second, current polling says 75% of registered GOP voters believe the election was rigged. How many of them bothered to look at the facts there were a total of 500 questionable votes in the six contested states Trump said were stolen. Out of 25 million cast. And,yes, the Ds can always find a way to screw up but what we are facing now is a combination of apathy and indifference by all voters. The degree of civic illiteracy among all Americans is appalling. The only Republican whose word I trust now is Liz Cheney.
