I call my 2 Dem. senators and non-MAGA Rep. Hurd (a lawyer) every day. I do think most Jews do not appreciate being used as pawns in trump's attack on universities- we all know who could be next. I call every day.
We know Dumbass doesn’t give a shit about Jews. His campaign against antisemitism is just a cover to harass universities to knuckle under to his demands (or else).
I am a Christian but my very best friend from my last job in Corporate America is Jewish and he made the same point to me over the past couple weeks. This is all a scam and Trump's version of "protedting the Jews" is one huge scam and smokescreen aimed at misleding the nation and providing BS cover partiularly to those in our nation whose thinking and reasoning ability is not all that deep or rooted in any degree of contemporary world history.
What is if not amazing surely the height of the well organized evil which is going on is just how fast and thorough the Project 2025 bros and Stephen Miller have been able to marshall all the power and assets of our Federal government to lash out and attack any any and all who would put up any degree of resistance to their campaign to punish any individual or organization who/which might resist the advances of this real Borg. The governor of Maine and her citizens, major universities and their faculties and student bodies, etc. But, to me the most reprehensible action taken to date was the attack on large American law firms too many of them who quickly abandoned their supposed values and connsciences to protect their income streams. This action IMHO shows that while many in this nation like to talk a good game (including just about every sitting Repulican in Congess, many on Wall Street and in the corporate "C" suites a way too large numger of US are so focused and beholden to the mighty buck and our own economic self interests we are willing to sell our naiton, our citizens and our future for the moder day equivalent of 30 pieces of silver.
When we do an inventory of the carnage when this nightmare reaches its inevitable conclusion whatever indictments are brough agaist the far too willing coconspirators let's make sure all the leades and coconspirators are brought to some form of justice. Hopefully, there will be enough left of our social and legal infrastrucure left to do so. If not, I fear we are going to see what always seems to happen when a supposedly civilizes society fails to police itself with moderation and justice. The law of the jungle takes effect.
Everything Trump does is a lie or a scam. This has been known for decades. No US bank would deal with him after 2000 or so. That's how Putin got his hooks into Trump, guaranteeing a loan from Deutsche Bank in 2008. Without that Trump would be in a homeless shelter.
I call my 2 Senators, both Rs, every day and my House rep too. Yesterday, I called Harvard and thanked them for defending our democracy and they couldn't have been nicer. 617-495-1502.
Your column is not extreme or alarmist to anyone paying attention. The truth is hard for some to hear and contemplate. The time to stand up and accept what is happening is now, and the presence of pushback needs to be magnified much more than we have seen thus far.
“Yet there is another reason Abrego Garcia is useful as a captive body: his fate speaks to the apparent randomness of authoritarian repression. Autocracies encourage compliance by telegraphing that anyone can be a target.”
I will be. We will be having a Food drive and litter clean up along with it since it's a Day of Action. There are 25 Protests scheduled here in Indiana alone. Yay!!
The Vichy government did not take bribes. This government is. That's the point. The only point. They did not have to agree. Other law firms chose not to. One other point. Clients are free to leave. In Vichy all the law firms, all the of France agreed to cooperate. On 10 July 1940, the French National Assembly, Assemblée nationale, voted to give absolute power to Pétain in the Constitutional Law of 1940, effectively dissolving itself, and ending the Third Republic. The Vichy regime began.
No, you're not. We just need to remember we will never be Nazis. We are fighting back. We have never been under the thumb of a monarch or an oligarch. Germany had been, so had Italy, so had Russia. We have never had that experience. And we won't now.
Not to quibble, but the Colonialists were ruled by a monarch; we only escaped by bloody means. Jackson successfully ignored the SCOTUS when he ordered what we now call the Trail of Tears, on which an estimated 15,000 people died. Even FDR ordered the Japanese internment camps. We are not safe because "it can't happen here". We must rise to this occasion, or fall.
"every teaching unit found to lack viewpoint diversity must be reformed by admitting a critical mass of students who will provide viewpoint diversity.” It’s unintelligible gibberish, but their “viewpoint diversity” means the end of free thought at Harvard.
I find it clear. It says that the government will allow Harvard to admit only Trump supporters. This provision contradicts the provision that “The University must adopt and implement merit-based admissions policies."
I think Harvard's next move should be to withdraw the degrees, BAs and JDs, of all persons associated with the lawless Trump regime. And they should take the further step of making a formal complaint to each of the State Bar Associations where their JD recipients are admitted to practice law. Proactively, and in solidarity with Harvard, every issuer of a JD degree to a Trump, Bondi, and Noem accolyte should do the same. Yale, Georgetown, Stanford, UChicago, et al, it's time to stand up.
No. To withdraw a degree would be Trump-like. They have earned their degrees. There would be nothing wrong with complaining to state bar associations, because it would be up to the bar associations to decide what to do with the complaints.
I am particularly impressed with the whistleblower Daniel Berulis. And he has been threatened. That kind of courage is heroic compared to the sniveling capitulation of the pricy law firms. And he said he is both hoping to be proved wrong and hoping that other federal employees will take courage and come forward with what they know. These kinds of actions could be the beginning of taking the clowns in charge into a court of law. Keep telling us like it is. We need to hear it.
Yes! He was on the PBS News Hour today. What he said about the transfer of confidential information to DOGE, and the near-immediate deletion of the details of the transfer, was horrifying. Putin's agents are succeeding beyond their dreams.
You know it's possible to correct it? To the far right of your name on any post are three dots (an ellipsis). Click on it. One of the options is Edit. (Another is Delete.) It comes in very handy!
It's just that if people want to find out more, it's important they search on the right name. I hope people will do that with a lot of the material that Lucian puts up, because there's often an interesting story behind the main piece.
Karen, I am 63, and my brain slips on a regular basis. I assert it is a stress reaction, and if we are not all cognizant of stress during this time, then some have found a sand pit to bury their heads in or something along those lines. I want to thank you for mentioning Daniel and his bravery as I watched the segment he did on Rachel Maddow's show last night. I sat rapt at every word he, his attorney, and Rachel spoke. It was another story that sent chills up my spine.
And he presented very credible evidence of the crimes being committed by DOGE. The Russian intrusion was also brought out; I have no doubt that the forensic evidence, when further investigated and verified, will paint a very dark picture of what is going on. And heads will roll, hopefully only figuratively.
Time to hit the streets America. The moment of an American Revolution of Dignity on the Maidan is upon us! On Saturday let our voices be heard from sea to shining sea, from Pt Barrow to Key West!
Fact-check: It wasn't a poem, and the exact wording of the quote is: "First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. I only went by the words Nielmöller said. As for "Bulls and tats," those were allegedly the symbols of MS-13 membership ICE saw on Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who I assume you know is the Maryland man wrongly sent to prison in El Salvador. Oh, the Chicago Bulls are the NBA basketball team in Chicago. The NFL football team is nicknamed the Bears.
All good points. From my extensive reading on the rise of Nazism (and what followed), as best my aging brain believes, the Communists were a key part of the coaltion that enabled Hitler to sieze power. And once he was done with 'em....
I am aware of Chicago sports teams. And horrified by the Garcia mess.

Nothing will happen as long as these spineless do-nothings are in office. Assuming there are elections in 2026, all Repugnants should be voted out.
Tom, of course, I knew exactly who you were referring to, but I should have used the term "Repugnants" when referring to Congress in my response. We both know the Ds know right from wrong and tyranny from democracy.

How many times have we heard that they will stand up and do the right thing, only to find in the end when the vote is taken, they cave! And if there isn't a protest near you this weekend, start one of your own. You, a few friends, some signs, and visibility = a protest! And you get to be a democracy activist.
The fascist noose tightens more every day. Every day, we kiss a little (or a lot) more of our Constitutionally guaranteed rights goodbye, thanks to this wannabe Hitler. I do not believe that I am exaggerating. My hope lies in the protests, may they grow by the tens of millions, leaps and bounds, with every nation-wide expression of outrage at the crimes being committed by Trump and Musk. I'm still gobsmacked at the idea of the world's wealthiest man trashing agencies he knows zero about! Who voted for HIM? Who vetted HIM? Who invested power in HIM? Not the American public, and not the legislative branch of the government, which has been way too supine in all of this treason.
You are certainly NOT exaggerating, Linda. Drumpf & MuskRat are following Hitler's script for dictatorship, and the Repugnants in Congress are turning a blind eye to, or worse, encouraging, everything they're doing. And what's really scary is they're doing it faster than Hitler did. I envision a 1776-style revolt as the only way out of this morass.
As to your question about remembering what freedom felt like, that is what I have been worrying about for my grandchildren. They range in age from 6 to 16. My children are good people who are as devastated by what's happening as I am. I hope the 16-year-old will remember, and maybe the 12 and 13 year olds. I may have read too fast, but don't see anything here about Harvard's legal options. This seems like a typical trump high-stakes nuisance threat that Harvard would inevitably appeal. Who'll have the best lawyers, huh? …

Yes Lucian, yes indeed we are facing a future that exceeds my wildest nightmares... I lived in the WW2 era and then Korea and on and on....this is far beyond those things because of only one major difference
It is on our land, in our homes and on the streets..
all that said over and over again leaves me asking for you to move forward toward a solution, a pathway of positive thinking and innovations whatever you can bring out of your following to show a direction that is positive...
These things have often happened "on our land, in our homes and on the streets" right here in the U.S. But they mostly happened to Black people, Chinese people, people of Japanese descent -- non-white people. We white people can learn from their example and make use of our own privilege. And let's not forget that, scary as these times are for all of us, they're far scarier for undocumented immigrants, green-card holders, and anyone who might be mistaken for one or the other.
I call my 2 Dem. senators and non-MAGA Rep. Hurd (a lawyer) every day. I do think most Jews do not appreciate being used as pawns in trump's attack on universities- we all know who could be next. I call every day.

Putin's saboteur doesn't give a damn about Judaism, or Islam, or Christianity. He worships himself.
Exactly. His niece Mary Trump refers to him as a pathological narcissist!

Blame the Jews. It’s worked so well before. And aren’t we omnipotent?
That’s next. History tells us that is always where this heads.
Your column is not extreme or alarmist to anyone paying attention. The truth is hard for some to hear and contemplate. The time to stand up and accept what is happening is now, and the presence of pushback needs to be magnified much more than we have seen thus far.
From Ruth Ben- Ghiat
“Yet there is another reason Abrego Garcia is useful as a captive body: his fate speaks to the apparent randomness of authoritarian repression. Autocracies encourage compliance by telegraphing that anyone can be a target.”
Just curious how many people are going to be marching/protesting this Saturday. I hope a lot…
I have only missed last week but I will there for my 7th protest!
I'll be out this Saturday in DC.
I will be. We will be having a Food drive and litter clean up along with it since it's a Day of Action. There are 25 Protests scheduled here in Indiana alone. Yay!!
Sounds great. I love the idea of a food drive!
I will be out in Hibbing, Minnesota this Saturday.
Vichy Paul Weiss.
Vichy Skadden.
Vichy Kirkland & Ellis.
Vichy Latham & Watkins.
Vichy A&O Shearman.
Vichy Simpson Thacher & Bartlett.
Vichy Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft.
That's called bribery. There are laws against that. Vichy has nothing to do with it. It's bribery.
Vichy has everything to do with it. These firms are *collaborators.*
The Vichy government did not take bribes. This government is. That's the point. The only point. They did not have to agree. Other law firms chose not to. One other point. Clients are free to leave. Decades ago I stated on an internet forum "We are not Nazis. We must never become Nazis." It's looking as though I was naive.
No, you're not. We just need to remember we will never be Nazis. We are fighting back. We have never been under the thumb of a monarch or an oligarch. Germany had been, so had Italy, so had Russia. We have never had that experience. And we won't now.

Hold onto that thought! We must fight and resist!
In a merit-based system, no Trumpers would qualify for admission.
I think it's pretty obvious that a lot of current trumpers in the Senate have already graduated from Harvard (Cruz, Hawley, etc.)
Yes!!!!!!!
No. To withdraw a degree would be Trump-like. They have earned their degrees. There would be nothing wrong with complaining to state bar associations, because it would be up to the bar associations to decide what to do with the complaints.
Bold, but it's time for bold.
Great Idea!
I am particularly impressed with the whistleblower Daniel Berulis. And he has been threatened. That kind of courage is heroic compared to the sniveling capitulation of the pricy law firms. Yes! He was on the PBS News Hour today. What he said about the transfer of confidential information to DOGE, and the near-immediate deletion of the details of the transfer, was horrifying. Putin's agents are succeeding beyond their dreams.
I didn't know your reference so I googled it. It took a while and about five variations, but apparently "Daniel Beluris" does not exist.
I did find this, googling: "Daniel Berulis, a whistleblower, alleges DOGE data breach at NLRB", so I will presume that's who you were referring to.
So sorry for the misspelling.
You know it's possible to correct it? To the far right of your name on any post are three dots (an ellipsis). Click on it. One of the options is Edit. (Another is Delete.) It comes in very handy!

I do understand. I’m almost 80 and value correct information. My old brain occasionally slips.
I knew what you meant, Karen, by the name.
Thanks. I appreciate your comment.
Time to hit the streets America. The moment of an American Revolution of Dignity on the Maidan is upon us! On Saturday let our voices be heard from sea to shining sea, from Pt Barrow to Key West!
Part of what you write reminds me of Martin Niemöller's poem "First They Came For The Jews."
I am also reminded of what Santayana said about about those who don't learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat it (paraphrase).
Fact-check: It wasn't a poem, and the exact wording of the quote is: "First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."
Thanks. I was just taking what I found off of a Google;search, knowing the general gist of it but trying to check it.
And the Nazis did go after the socialists first.
To fact-check Niemöller, the first arrests by Nazis in the month after the February, 1933, Reichstag fire were members of the KPD, the German Communist Party, and those "associated" with the Communists --- you know, the equivalent back then of wearing a Chicago Bulls cap and having a tattoo. Total, around 20,000.
I believe that's what Nielmöller meant by SocIalists.
And it was the Communists Hitler aligned with to gain power.
Uh, Bulls and tattoos? That's a little too inside football and Windy City for some of us to understand.
From my reading (books, as well as Wikipedia), while the Nazi (NSDAP) and Communist Party (KPD) held many seats in the Reichstag prior to Hitler grabbing absolute power, they were never "aligned," although the KPD is said to have used the slogan, "after Hitler, us," for a number of years before they were all thrown into concentraion camps.
Trump continues to wreak all of this havoc on the false claim that we are in a state of emergency and The Alien Enemies Act gives him this authority. It's the standard Trump playbook, create an emergency and then claim credit for putting it out. Congress must step in a declare that we're not in a state of emergency, and the S.Ct. has to rule that Trump's actions are unconstitutional and not in any way supported by the AEA. This season of Handmaid's Tale has been eerily prescient, as June has found, the only way out is "to show up and fight."
Congress is filled with cowards and traitors.
"Congress must step in . . . ." Tom, are you referring to the current Congress of the United States? Actually I was referring to the democrats in Congress, republicans would have to tire of bowing down to Dear Leader and start the rebellion.
Tom, of course, I knew exactly who you were referring to, but I should have used the term "Repugnants" when referring to Congress in my response. We both know the Ds know right from wrong and tyranny from democracy.

I am so horrified by the whole deal that for once in my life I am speechless.
And numb, and paralyzed.
Which is of course part of the plan.
So, the remedy is to get out and demonstrate. Stand up and be counted. Call your federal Reps and Senators.
It’s like voting. Every vote counts.
Today 12 Republican Congress people sent a letter saying they would not support reductions in the budget bill to Medicaid that would hurt the vulnerable. I’m betting that would not have happened without the demonstrations by We The People.
Get out there and be counted.

more than usual, sorry... we are all frightened
"one major difference It is on our land …"
And back then Congress and the American people were united against external common enemies.
