I still have a landline phone, and get calls from pollsters. Last night I was able to give Youngkin failing grades across the board, and report that Virginia is on the “wrong path.” It’s worth whatever I pay to have the opportunity to tell pollsters that Republicans suck. Thanks for the Carlyle Group information. They are all such hucksters.

GOP=Greedy Oligarch Party. The only solution is to vote like our lives depend on it. Massive voter mobilization and organizing. Stop internecine squabbles among liberals and moderates. Welcome old line rational conservatives who are disgusted with Trump and his acolytes

GOP, KKK, What's the difference?

Not much, but you can be sure the robes are hanging in the closet, ready to wear.

It's nice to see you and Tracy are getting settled into the new place. Love that desk, though! As for DeathSantis, he's doomed his party in Florida because they've just changed Disney World's 'special tax' status and I've learned that you don't piss off a mouse, because they have teeth and can bite.

The textbook thing is just another part of the GOP's mission to make all of their voters stupid, and anyone who wants a real education would be well advised to move out because 1 math book is not going to do much for them in the long run.

Florida is going to be the wetter version of Texas before long. The only problem is that when the next really big hurricane happens, who will be in charge?

Because we've seen the GOP in action during disasters-it's not a pretty sight.

I am still trying to figure out how any reference to CRT even appears in a math text book.

The real problem is that seven turns out to be black, three is gay and all the numerals are Arabic.

Perfect!

Very strange that they never show the actual pages. If the math books really do contain inappropriate material, where is it? I want to SEE that they are so outraged about. Does the math book use-- for example-- a counting of slaves for an elementary school math problem: "There is a ship with 604 black African slaves chained in the hold. If an evil white slave owner buys 13 of them, how many slaves are left in the hold of the slave ship?" I just made that up, because I have NO idea what these right-wingers are so upset about. Show me!

I'm waiting for a math text to be banned for containing the word "homeomorphism."

I so agree with having things of history in general or family history, preferably both, around you is good. In East Hampton, John uses a partner's desk that belonged to my father's father, and I use one that belonged to my mother's father. Both were interesting, smart men, so maybe some of that will rub off on us. Your new house sounds really wonderful.

Marvelous. Lucian, consider raising your monitor 6 inches. You want to look straight at it with your eyes at mid level, this lets the muscles in your neck relax. Please try it.

DeSantis is a member of the Federalist Society as is Governor Youngkin, they promote classic Confederate philosophy and help each other get rich. Americans hate extremism, eventually these scammers will get the boot.

I'm not sure most Americans even *recognize* extremism, unless it comes with "EXTREMIST!" pasted on its forehead. 74 million of them/us voted to re-elect 45, after all.

My desk is a traveling tavern table with a marble pastry chef's top that belonged to my wife's grandfather. It's just a marble slab sitting on a sturdy, undecorated wooden frame and legs. I love it.

Good on you, Lucian, and glad to see my former law firm colleague Claude here, so I can make sure he read[s] your “Dress Gray”!

Why do you presume I haven't read it, Richard?

I made no such presumption; read my reply again and you’ll notice the bracketed “s” which covers both possibilities, taking into account the possible past tense “read”.

As a fellow alum who used to belly up to the Lion's Head bar alongside Claude, I'd guarantee he read "Dress Gray" long ago.

Sorry; my brain was exhausted from a long day, so I didn't take the brackets into account.

These guys are ABUSING their office for personal vendettas and unethical, financial gain. Is there no legal remedy for crooked behavior? Lord knows, Democrats are hounded out of office for comparatively minor indiscretions. They waste tax payer money grandstanding at the boarder, then turn around to crucify Disney for exercising free speech that defends against bigotry.

Why don’t they just fucking wear their brown shirts and their Jack boots

I wish the GOP would publish some pages from these allegedly CRT -infused math textbooks. If they are so concerned, why don’t they “expose” this supposed horror being inflicted on the impressionable minds of young math students?

A great story about the desk that you are happily working at! It was well-loved then and is now, even more so.

I don’t know if you heard but apparently today, Florida State Democrats protested Florida’s State Republicans draconian laws regarding black votes. Maybe you can expound on that, when you have time.

Removing the special tax district for Disney will result in at least two FL counties shouldering a much larger tax burden than they had before. Since Disney has 70,000 employees in FL, many of whom are taxpayers, make sure they all know what he is doing come November. And this is just the tip of the DeathSantis iceberg. There is so much worse.

I do think your new home seems very special. Less than one week to have your office set is quite impressive.

That is why Florida is referred to as Desantistan. He’s another evil despot. He, TFG and Abbot are forming an alliance ILFH-Intelligence Limited Fekheads! I don’t even wish to admit that we lived in Florida at one point. Who would ever have imagined that Jeb Bush, who was Governor then, would be even more of a lightweight than I thought and far less hated!

And who woulda thunk that Repubs would be fighting with Disney?

Biting the hand and all that, right?

Exactly! Disney was always a super conservative company. Guess that is changing. Good to see they’re moving into the 21st century.

Yes but the employees had to remind the CEO of the many LBGTQ people who worked for them worldwide. At least the CEO apologized for the mistake he made and corrected that. Walt Disney’s granddaughter put her money where her mouth is and sent money to LGBTQ organizations.

Many years ago, when I moved around a lot, I used a short ironing board as a desk for my typewriter. In Florida, it looks like 1 + 1 = gimme. Also, DeSantis wants to pass a law against ballplayers saying they're going to Disneyland.

Years ago I read that the biggest consumers of textbooks determined what the smaller states had available for purchase. This was before this nation split in two.

The No. 1 state? Texas.

Could be an interesting research project.

Expand full comment

This is true. In the past, the three states that dictated what went into textbooks were Texas, Florida, and California. I don't know how things stack up now.

I have been on the State Textbook Committee here twice, once for math and once for spelling textbooks. I don't know what the "rules" are in Florida regarding textbook selection, but I CAN tell you that the process is highly competitive and for the publishers all about money. I read his decision to go with the one publisher not so much as about any questionable content (which is why they dare not reference anything - they might get sued) but strictly about putting money into Carlyle. It's crooked. It's GOP to the core.
