This whole incident is outrageous. The fact that the police chief is still drawing a paycheck and being protected is beyond belief. Were this some small town in New England the outrage over this would be overwhelming, but this is a largely Hispanic town and the response by the public so far is reflective of the overall attitude of white America towards people of color. I so feel for those parents. The horror of losing a child knowing it may have been prevented. And the cop who was restrained by cowards has to live with his inability to save his wife’s life. This is the unthinkable brought into reality. It’s sickening.

Just how many "good guys with guns," all armed to the teeth and paid by tax dollars to do this, do you need to open a door and take on a single young man with a rifle? How can anyone possibly believe that the answer to this problem is training and arming more people?

And the door wasn't even locked. A while back the chief said it was a barricade situation, then he said he didn't consider himself in charge. So as the chief of the school district police who but the chief of a school in his district did he think was in charge of school security, and over any incident that might occur. ? He should be asked that question. As far as legislation allowing for gun training of school officials, that is in effect saying you guys are going to have to protect yourself in the future, you can;t count on the police. State officials should be focusing on emergency training for all Texas police using Uvalde as an example of what not to do. Lastly they should fire all the cops who did nothing. They should be in another line of work.

I just finished watching MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell’s show where he revealed the residents of Uvalde fighting against the city council and the school board about the chief. The mayor finally admitted that he was wrong about the chief and the police “inability” to stop the murders of these innocent children and 2 teachers. Another council member stated he was going to originally support the chief. During the meeting, he changed his mind and stated he would not, in fact, give this chief any cover. (Wide applause) The fact that these cops did NOT do their job that they took an oath to do, they should be imprisoned and permanently stripped of their badge and benefits

I've seen on social media the frustration of educators with the concept of arming teachers who aren't allowed to design their own curriculi or choose their own text books. Every one of the law officers who stood out in the hall for over an hour need to be fired, including Mr. Arredondo, and prosecuted for dereliction of duty.

Just finished reading this. Cops are not my favorite people but this takes the cake. I am so angry that my hands are still shaking.

I'm not a police fan either. Whether it was being hassled as a college student for long hair and looking like a "doper" or watching cops get away with most anything when I was a reporter, these "police officers" take the cake.

With 19 police officers on scene, it seems one would have the courage to tell the others he or she is going in, screw the alleged incident commander.

Police regularly show their machismo by dressing like combat soldiers, picking on the poor and minorities and generally acting like their shit doesn't stink. In my part of the country (OK, TX), police can shoot and kill alleged law breakers with impunity.

I consider all 19 cowards.

Thought men with guns were supposed to protect us 😡‼️ Fūkking cowards 😡‼️‼️

But the absolutely biggest cowards are being paid by us to pass usejess pathetic “ gun laws” that have an expiration date as part of the DEAL. These are the most contemptible. And we are all supposed to jump for joy that they talked to each other to produce this travesty that will do NOTHING since they don’t outlaw automatic weapons. Its beyond words…

I could not agree more. They should be made to attend all the funerals that were needed (last time, this time, next time) because of their cowardice. They should have to explain themselves to the grieving families.

The carnage was horrible and will have lifelong effect on the families in Uvalde. I am particularly taken by the detainment and removal of officer Ruiz. He KNOWS all of the cowards who failed to act. Going forward how can these cops bear to look him, or anyone in the community, in the eye. If Ruiz was allowed to lead the charge, how many lives might have been saved.

Thanks Lucian, for staying with the gun stories. With this story my fear is a drastic swing of the pendulum.

Ruiz wasn't the only person detained. Parents, who showed up at the school, were hand-cuffed when they tried to cross police lines...to do something, when police were not.

What happens, at the next incident, when parents show up with their weapons?

It makes my mind go to really dark places.

A cop outside the classroom learns his wife, a teacher, is inside and wounded. He tries to enter the classroom and is stopped by other cops, disarmed, and escorted away.

The only explanation is that the cops feared for their lives if the door was opened. How can they live with themselves?

You can't "Like" this for what it is saying about the facts, only for the way the author is saying it and making an issue out of this abomination. "Likes" can be so misleading for the uncomprehending! In most social media, but not here.

Anyone else wondering how many other police forces around the country are as poorly trained and led as the cops in Uvalde? I'm now at the point where seeing the word "Republican" in print makes me want to puke.

Rubin Ruiz should be given the "paid administrative leave" that Arredondo does not deserve. Apparently, he was the only officer on site there to do what he was supposed to do: protect lives.

Heads should roll. Lots of them.

And the Band Plays On… the Repug disregard for life punctuates the danger they pose to EVERYBODY. They aren’t leaders—they are bullies relying on a crowd for direction. When the crowd hesitates before an unlocked door, you can bet there will be no Super Heroes to step in, not from a Repug State where people have surrendered free thought to outside influences (Bible, propaganda, sound bytes or the Ted Cruz’s of their world.)
