Yours truly gathers his strength to write another screed on Gardiner’s Bay As close as I can tell, I’ve been writing this newsletter for 103 days, beginning the day before that grim landmark in our nation’s history, January 6, straight through to today. I’m pretty sure I’ve written something every single day, even if it was only to tell you on March 20 that I was taking a night off and to post a photograph of the desk where I work, with Tracy Harris’ painting showing on the wall behind my computer monitor.
My brother has been a writer at long as I can remember. When I was growing up, I told all my friends he was a famous writer...and it was true! As we’ve both gotten older (yikes, I’ll be 60 in May!), I appreciate the importance of his writing more than I ever have. Please subscribe!!

I love you Lucian. And because I love you, I want you to have success and be happy. Because that’s what I want for the people that I love: that they take good care of themselves and that they are doing well.
My favorite part of this message is the news that you have 518 paid subscribers. I can multiply that number by five dollars per month and approximate your income from this newsletter.
Thank you so much for sharing that information with me. I appreciate having it.
I doubt anyone is ever going to track this information, but I would not be surprised if you are setting a new record for speed of income from a brand new newsletter. In 103 days you went from Brand New to somewhere around $2500/mo.
And counting. And continuing to grow.
Not too shabby.
You wrote, “I write because I enjoy it, I write because I have a great big giant ego and I think I am Right About Most Things, I write because I like entertaining people, and I write because for some reason it’s been in my bloodstream as long as I can remember.”
I will confirm right here, right now, that you are officially Right About Most Things. The judge and jury have completed their investigation, and the result is: (drumroll please, video of envelope being opened by people dressed in fancy expensive clothing)

The plaque and the silver trophy are being prepared as we speak.
I adore listening to somebody who agrees with me nearly all the time. Because I too have a great big giant ego and I too have writing in my bloodstream (since July 1967, robin’s egg 3 X 5 blue spiral notebook, gift from my German-born aunt), the gift of having you in my life is a godsend I treasure.
I love your newsletter! I heard about it from a friend on another substack. One advantage to the paid subscription, other than not feeling guilty about enjoying your newsletter and being able to share it with friends without paying a dime, is that the subscription opens your whole substack community to subscribers...and what a treasure trove of interesting readers and writers THEY are as well. During this pandemic, I have found substack newsletters a life encouraging force - a way to learn, to share stories, to share the ups and downs of the time we live in and the times we lived in and a way to connect in new ways with people we may never ever in our "other" pre-pandemic life have had a chance to "meet." Thank you.
My subscription is money very well spent, and hey, I almost got thrown in Facebook jail just for quoting you on my timeline! (It was that bit about men being pigs. Pissed the guys at FB off, I guess.)

Congratulations Lucian.
I’m a paid subscriber. I’m happy to do it, as it is well worth it! Thanks for sharing your opinions and insights with us.

Truth...I subscribe to many other publications as well as yours.
Yours is the only one I read every time you publish.
Hi Lucian, a $1 or $2 level might be helpful (for me, anyway). Bob Cesca’s Patreon added a $1 level and it was apparently quite popular. 🤔😉😊
Love your "work" Lucian!
You always "entertain", but you often "inspire" as well, that's for certain, thank you.
