Dear potential paid subscriber:
As you can see above, I don’t have any great promotional quotes from famous authors and television commentators, so I have provided my own. It’s not because I haven’t been around very long. If anything, I’ve been around too long. I’ve had a 50-plus year career as a journalist, novelist, screenwriter and general all-around-writer-for-hire, during which I have covered three wars, multiple national political campaigns, Watergate, the famous Stonewall Uprising in New York City in 1969, and I’ve written investigative stories on everything from the birth of freestyle skiing way back in 1975 (for Rolling Stone) to how the military industrial complex conspires with the uniform services to rip more bucks out of our pockets by inflating the defense budget beyond all reason.
I started out at the Village Voice in 1967 and over the years have written for the New York Times, The New Yorker, Esquire, Harper’s, Rolling Stone…the list is longer, but you get the picture. I’ve also written five bestselling novels, scripts for television shows, and several unsuccessful motion pictures. I started with Substack in January 2021 and having been posting columns nearly every day ever since. I’ve written a lot about our ex-president, including full coverage of his spread of the Big Lie and the DOJ’s attempts to bring him to heel over the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol and all of the legal maneuvering surrounding his theft of hundreds of classified documents from the White House. I’ve also written extensively about the war in Ukraine and Vladimir Putin’s corrupt reign over Russia, the nightmare of mass shootings in this country and the madness of gun culture in general, and the descent of the Supreme Court into the Handmaiden’s Tale cellar we find them in today. I have also written a series of personal columns about life in New York City in the 1970’s, my connection to Monticello and my cousins in the Hemings family through our mutual descendancy from Mr. Jefferson, and some very vibrant -- if I do say so myself —pieces on rock ‘n roll and jazz.
Here is a smattering of some of my Substack columns for your perusal:
That’s just a sample, folks. There’s also a piece about listening to Bob Dylan write “Blood on the Tracks” — the whole album — downstairs from my SoHo loft, the night I carried a stoned Leon Russell in my arms onto the stage at the Filmore East, and a piece about my cousin from the Hemings family Shannon Lanier called “You can’t erase history that is staring you in the face.”
