Thank you Donald Trump for flushing the deplorable moles out of their hidey-holes and parading their insurrectionist faces in the most heavily surveilled space on the planet so they can be systematically identified, prosecuted, convicted, and imprisoned.

Prison is good, but execution for treason would be even better.

Now, now ... the death penalty is barbaric. Perhaps Dimbulb Donny’s life sentence could include daily polishing of AOC’s shoes?

Expand full comment

I don’t consider the death penalty barbaric in theory, although it often is in practice. I’d like to see a lot fewer executions of poor black men and the very occasional execution of mass murderers and proven traitors.

Every now and then I catch myself thinking: Now that guy, if anyone, deserves the death penalty. But we're in the process of getting rid of the death penalty. It is barbaric and when you think how many innocent people have most assuredly been executed, it's not worth it.

Expand full comment

It's been said before, by many others, but it bears repeating: The death penalty is barbaric less because of what it does to the executed than because of what it does to the executioners.

Dimbulb Donny. DumDum Donny. Nice! 👌

What was so much fun was watching the Republicans being steam-rollered into nothingness. Because Biden knows so many of them personally, they have absolutely no way to blackmail him or threaten him with some silly punishment for doing his job.

It was just so refreshing and wonderful to see a man who knows what he's doing talking to us. Thank god we elected the right guy. Mitch is depressed because he backed the wrong guy, and his party is falling apart-and he can't do a damn thing about it. Great column, Lucian!

“a contemptible Kentucky cowpie”: What a magnificently apt line, Lucian, and nobody else could have written it. With respect to Biden, whom I never voted for until he won the nomination last year, his performance thus far as President is testament to the sometimes unfathomable mysteries of human character. Having put his foot in his mouth for decades, he suddenly is exactly the right person for the moment, the very personification of gravitas. I am so grateful that his time has come, because his time is our time.

I love that line, too, because it is a perfect fit for that scowling jowly ugly cowpie with a cowpie for brains, too.

Is it possible that some blue collar republicans will wake up and realize that Biden’s legislation will help them? Or do they only listen to Fox News about their four hamburgers a year? Or are so racist, they don’t care if they starve!

Racist birther Fox fed brain dead Trumpsters are headed over the cliff with Mr. Former.

R.I.P. GOP

The answer to your second and third questions is YES.

Is there a difference between hamburgers and hamberders? Maybe that's the hitch.

Excellent column. My question is terribly naive, but I’m going to ask it anyway. When republicans are alone with each other, do they openly admit they are attempting to overthrow democracy?

Expand full comment

I would guess probably not. But I will bet that ethnic and anti-Semitic slurs are used routinely.

Did Hitler admit that he was a murderous despot?

Expand full comment

Hitler deliberately attacked newly formed institutions in Germany, and because they were young and fragile, post-World War I and the end of the monarchy, he succeeded in dominating them. But your point is well taken. Would he call himself a despot? No, he called himself THE LEADER. Der Fuhrer. A true patriot, in his mind. Sound familiar?

Hitler had advanced syphilis and his lackeys held their noses and continued with The Agenda, because they were demented without excuse of medical cause.

Hi Andrea! Pleasure seeing you here.

You know how there's that ozone layer to worry about, destroys and kills? We now have the Republican Delusion Hate layer, and it, too, destroys and kills. They're subsumed into it. It must destroy and kill the good in brains and feelings also.

I doubt it. They don’t know what they’re doing. It’s like a bull in a China shop. They just want to conserve their whites first, males first, straights first society at any cost, even if it means destroying the rules-based system in their way. Maintain the society of Confederate America no matter what it takes. Oppose Obama. Oppose Biden. Oppose any movement in the direction of equal power, power sharing that reduced white power. Their society has already gone the way of the dodo and the dinosaur, they just haven’t caught up with reality yet. They don’t care about democracy or the rules, exception Liz Cheney Romney and select others. All they care about is the Forever Trump presidency and society.

I've read that when they aren't performing for Fox News, "the base," or (ultimately) Trump, many of them actually try in private to be buddy-buddy colleagues with the Democrats they're trashing in public.

Expand full comment

And how about the blistering Tim Scott took on all social media after his pathetic "there's no systemic racism in the U.S. and the virus had already started to turn around before Biden was inaugurated." The base will maybe believe that but most Republicans know that's a damned lie as well. We're still at an enormous disadvantage with the results of the Census so we have got to get every single Democrat to vote, every one, to over power, gerrymandering, voter suppression laws, etc., about six or seven things all stacked in their favor. But Joe Biden is a hurricane of fresh, positive air.

It was comforting to read this and consider your perspective that those folks are "depressed." Maybe I just "saw" what I always tend to see when I watch a bunch of recalcitrant fat cats with their arms crossed and their bottoms firmly glued to their seats - uncaring, self absorbed, selfish, greedy, power hungry beltway malingerers.
