If you’re going by who won the Pennsylvania Democratic primary for the Senate with more than twice the vote of the next candidate, it certainly would seem so. John Fetterman checks boxes that few Democrats running for office check these days. He wears cargo shorts and a hoodie on the campaign trail, and he doesn’t look like a campaign consultant from New York City dressed him in the morning, the way all the Republicans running in fleece vests look. Currently the PA lieutenant governor, he was mayor of a working-class town in Western PA smack in the middle of the congressional district his opponent, Connor Lamb, won in 2018 and in the backyard of the district he represents today. Lamb had the endorsements of “scores” of top Democratic Party officials, according to a report in the New York Times.
I first saw Fetterman on Vice News when he was mayor of Braddock, PA.
My first impression was, "I like this guy. He's a real leftist. He will go far..." I felt exactly the same immediate respect as I felt the first times I saw Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders.
As for the coming race... I'm SO glad I moved out of the Philly TV market before this happened!
Yay! A dyed in the wool, real Democrat from the 'heartland'. Elected in a landslide while he is recovering from a stroke! I can only imagine how Democratic consultants are scrambling to remake the images of their candidates... sadly I see only wardrobe changes and more rural and grittier backgrounds. Now let's find an 'urban' candidate who pulls no punches and inspires people in the same way.
I'm a fan, and my dog and I follow his dogs on Twitter, but I'm a little surprised by all the gushing over how unique among Democrats John Fetterman is. He stands out for sure, in multiple ways, but Sherrod Brown in neighboring Ohio has been advocating and legislating for working people for quite a while now, and Ohio isn't an easy state for a Democrat to get elected in statewide.
Speaking of Ohio, if anyone's looking for an antidote to _Hillbilly Elegy_, I heartily recommend the late Joe Bageant's _Deer Hunting with Jesus_ and _Rainbow Pie,_ along with any of his essays and features you can lay hands on. Along with Molly Ivins, he's the departed journalist that I most wish were around to comment on the mess we're in now.
I love him. He's so authentic. I grew up in PA and wish I could still cast a meaningful vote there, instead of my longtime home state of the very blue MA.
Love Fetterman. I’ve been watching him for years, from his tenure as mayor in Braddock. He can speak to blue collar workers authentically, he still lives in the renovated car dealership he bought there, and his advertising has focused on what he has done for PA, not what his opponents haven’t done. Conor Lamb went one ad negatively denouncing Fetterman as a socialist. It was short lived, ineffective, and pulled almost immediately. Meanwhile the republicans went scorched earth on each other….very very ugly. Fetterman can speak to rural PA and appeal to progressives. I can’t wait to see him stand up to the whiners in the senate, all 6’8” of him in Ted Cruz’s furry mug or ran Paul’s ferret head.
I gave some money to Fetterman early on in his campaign. I am definitely not for fracking but I do like everything he’s for. He’s an “everyman’s” man and he strikes a very opposing figure at 6’8”. He’s not fancy or dapper and I kinda like that for the Democrats because we need his size, his voice, and demeanor to affect change within our own party.
Having grown up in Pennsylvania, though admittedly the tony Main Line, I really like Fetterman in all hi tatted glory.
Fetterman will wipe out Oz like Salk did polio. You wanna see fracking? Here it comes…
I hope people like Fetterman are the future of elected officials.
Flush the Trumpsters everywhere!!!

Fetterman is refreshingly real!

Oh dear. Brooks Brothers managers everywhere are apoplectic!

I honestly don’t care if Federman wears a tutu. The thought of a charlatan like Dr. Oz in the Senate is horrifying.

Is Fetterman a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment?
If so, I hope it’s of the first clause…
Wow!
Yes, indeed a very interesting few months ahead of us!
