I've been calling them "Putinistas" for some time now, especially when he was making all those secret calls to Putin and keeping no records of anything discussed and especially when his playbook looked like it was written by the KGB itself (or whatever it is called these days.) But, you bring up a good point - one that I had not considered before. Now that he's down on the golf course, his freedom to plot with his old idol is unfettered and unwatched and could go in any direction. I suspect he has the goods on Putinista party members as well, because blackmail would certainly be one assured way of ensuring his power over them, forcing them to lie and up their attempts to gaslight their constituents. I guess they assume that being his loyal oligarchs will enable them to remain in power as long as he remains in power. Isn't that how they do it in Russia?

Greg Olear has dedicated a lot of print to Republicans that are owned by Putin and Trump. Lindsey Graham owned by Trump, Moscow Mitch and the schmucks who visited Russia on a July 4 in obeisance to the 21st Century’s other premier megalomaniac and probably the world’s richest individual.

I don't think Tom Coburn is drooling any longer, but perhaps he and Hugo Chavez can cook up some conspiracies from the grave.

My opinion only: What Trump and his minions did with Liz Cheney is reprehensible. This morning one congressman openly announced that Trump'll run again. So, even though we all suspected it, now it's unofficially officially unofficial. That the republicans think that Trump its the best they can do is discouraging. To me Republicans and democrats are all fleas off the same dog. Since bilboed and shackled dog is old and worn out and the flea powder has quit working, it's time to head to the vet and --- gulp --- do what needs to be done.

No, not quite. One believes in democracy just a little more than the other. And a pox on both remains appropriate. They're BOTH corrupt and any reasonable thinking person knows this. Re: Donna Brazile et al democratic debates. The whole concept that two parties control everything absolutely is anything but democratic and when you really get down to it, abhorrent. This used to be a one man one vote country until it became a one dollar one vote nation. What was once a democracy has become a "Capocracy." The immorality is spread fairly evenly across both parties. So no, it is not a vote for Republican theologies. That's just a week debater's point.

What DT wants and what Vladimir Putin is capable of are two entirely different things-first, Putin happens to have the largest military (next to China's) and enough nuclear weapons that makes DT blush and stammer with envy. He also has the backing of the Duma, and the majority of the Russian people, along with the cooperation of the KGB and most of the rest of his government.

What DT has is a very big legal problem coming down the pike is a few indictments from the State of New York and possibly Georgia and I would suggest he stop trying to subvert the Constitution and start pay attention to his legal woes because if he does not the next place he goes to is prison, and he won't be worth anything to anyone then.

I doubt that Putin has even cared to talk to DT since he left office. Putin hates weaklings, and since we saw that picture of them at Helsinki, it's pretty obvious that dog walk was all we needed to know who was leading whom.

The Republicans are bent on their own nuclear destruction, and I don't think any of the dire things you're predicting are going to come to pass because before they do, DT will be tried for a few things that will make him unacceptable for future use (as if he wasn't before).

Let them wallow in their own self-destruction. I really don't care. The faster the blow up comes, the better off we'll be. By the way, outlier Republicans are poised to construct a third party made up of people who don't want to be in the GOP as it is now. Good luck to them!

This business with Georgia stripping away their election oversight, Texas gerrymandering, etc, etc. threatens democracy in a new way: Why should the federal government even allow election results from such places to be counted????? It’s high time we did away with the Electoral College…AND REVOKE “Citizen’s United.”

I don’t understand why that crooked, seditious, hate-mongering traitor is allowed to function in the public arena. Free Speech comes with responsibilities, and Trump is a bold-faced liar and character assassin with the INTENT to SUBVERT THIS GOVERNMENT. WTF is the FBI?

I was noticing all the little errors and then it hit me: Lucian is furious. He is livid. Outraged.

We’ve all been tense and anxious for 4+ years. In January, I was distraught. My wife has been distraught since the 2016 presidential race. Having the White House complicit in global corruption doesn’t exactly settle down the nerves. On the contrary.

Did we ever think our cherished democracy would go through the horrific nightmare of being infiltrated by a corrupt foreign dictator to the point where we would see constant references to the likes of Machiavelli and Hitler and Stalin? No.

It’s a nightmare. When Shit-for-Brains gets arrested, even then we won’t be able to relax. Our entire society is going through the crucible. A light being shone on the racism and sexism and genderism at all levels of society. It ain’t easy, but we’ll get through the it. Sending love to Lucian and to all of you. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

What a day, just read about the lineup of former officers supporting Trump, a gaggle of loons, at best.

After the civil war and again in 1933 and in the 1950's there were calls for a constitutional convention. The 1870's saw a serious effort to create a constitution to regain southern "Rights' The 1930's saw talk of giving the president dictatorial powers, FDR publicly rejected that. 1950's saw Southern States wanting to erase Brown V Board of Education. In the end these movements failed because the owners of the United States said, "Not interested." The Republicans can strut, wave flags, hold rallies and have great fun. But should they get traction, federal prosecutors will crank up investigations. Mainstream media will bad mouth the leaders and sneer at the mob. If needed a few gunshots will be employed. Trillions of dollars behind Wall Street and the fortune 500, big banks and millions of ordinary folk are not going to jeopardize the most profitable nation in history for a bloated bleach blond in Palm Beach. Huey Long had fun scaring the big guys and then he got iced by his own guards. George Wallace had a great time until Arthur Bremmer got close. Rational Republicans might create "The National Conservative Party." Wave a pretty flag, give out delicious salads and cold beer and MAGA will split and DT will whimper and life in America will go on. Putin knows all of this, he will not help Trump, that is done.

In a similar vein, the Estates General called by Louis XVI in 1787 was the revival of an archaic institution in order to get around the recalcitrant Parliament de Paris in order to pass a budget. The ultimate outcome of this little exercise was a dismissal and then reconvening of the Estates General, again for a budgetary work around, in 1789. Didn’t work out too well for Louis that time. The Estates General morphed into the National Assembly and the rest, as they say, is history.
