The term elite used to be a compliment; anti-intellectuals have tried to make it an insult. I am also totally sick and tired of being told I have to sympathize with the rages and bigotries of t-rump’s worshipers. I have no more sympathy for them than for the angry and bigoted Germans who adored Hitler.

The Trump crowd has one powerful weapon to "own the libs."

Whine to Facebook when trounced verbally and get us 30 day FB jail sentences...for ex-military geezers, it's a campaign ribbon!

Gosh— maybe THAT explains why I keep getting sent to FB jail for what seem to me like relatively innocuous comments.

I find you fascinating. My brother in law went to West Point. Class ‘61. Straight arrow. Republican. Football all the way. Lt. Col. 2 yrs VN. You 2 are so different but I have to say he was the only Republican I could ever debate politics with in a sane manner. I am 71 and back to the land alternative. I just love the way you express. Thanks.

The commenter probably didn’t ask those same questions about BLM protesters. I never heard anyone on the right asking who are they? Do they have jobs? Do they have families? Why are they upset? They didn’t say, let’s get to know them better and listen to their concerns. The right always demands special treatment even when they commit heinous crimes.

I didn't know that I'm one of those so-called "elites" the insurrectionists hate so much. Sure, I'm pompous and read the NY Times (and also write replies to those columns) but I'm a working class one, too. Most of those people who want to own the libs are angry at the wrong people of course-they should be focused on the corporations and their minions in Congress who allow them to steal their lives, jobs and futures in the open.

Sure, we have the advantage of being well-read, intelligent and 'superior' in many ways, but we sure don't like trying overthrow the government because we think that we can or we're angry from lies told to us by middle class failed Queens real estate developer.. Because a lot of us had families who did that government thing from the first-or support it. If that is wrong, there's something wrong with us. Somebody's gotta do the hard stuff of running the country!

Oh, congratulations on your engagement to Tracey!

Being an elite means I can understand your newsletters too. Proud to be part of the club.

Yes, we are elites, but the issue I see is that these people have to be victims and to be a victim, you need a bad guy, an abuser, someone who victimizes you. The problem with these morons is that they’ve been sold a bill of goods and if they admit it their whole belief system falls apart and they have to start assuming responsibility for themselves and their actions. Which is like looking in the mirror and seeing and ugly monster.

There is the productive elite and there is the vampire elite. The productive elite is cultivated, thoughtful, interested in community as well as private welfare, understanding of the importance of the arts. The productive elite is the jewel of American civilization. and we are constantly under attack. The vampire elite is not well educated but super rich through ruthless rapacity. They buy congress, they have little or no concern for community; they are consumed by self. They have little or no appreciation of art or cultivation. They take and consider it an outrage to be asked to give. They are the lowest form of American life forms. And I am aggravated beyond endurance when I hear them use our cultivation, generosity, thoughtfulness, and conscience against us by using the word elite as if it were a flaw. I am aggravated beyond endurance when the media endorse their language.
