Cheers to NATO countries for sticking together so far…especially the Baltics, Germany and Poland. All showing courage with an uncertain outcome.

The fat a$$ drug addict might soon find himself stranded at Mar a Lago with no escape to Moscow.

It’s all terrifying. Hopefully, the Russian people retain their resolve to condemn their leader. SWIFT restrictions are coming.

How about a NATO-enforced ban on military flights in Ukrainian airspace; that would go a long way toward leveling the playing field. It’s risky, but could clear the skies of MIGs and SUs.

I like this idea! Maybe, we could send some 82nd units in on “humanitarian mission” (just a fantasy, I know).

So eerily apropos this evening on PBS Folk Music special:

Barry McGuire's 1965 "Eve of destruction..."

The Eastern world, it is explodin'

Violence flarin', bullets loadin'

You're old enough to kill but not for votin'

You don't believe in war, but what's that gun you're totin'?

And even the Jordan river has bodies floatin'

But you tell me over and over and over again my friend

Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

Don't you understand what I'm trying to say?

Can't you feel the fear that I'm feeling today?

If the button is pushed, there's no running away

There'll be no one to save with the world in a grave

Take a look around you boy, it's bound to scare you, boy

But you tell me over and over and over again, my friend

Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

Yeah, my blood's so mad, feels like coagulatin'

I'm sittin' here just contemplatin'

I can't twist the truth, it knows no regulation

Handful of Senators don't pass legislation

And marches alone can't bring integration

When human respect is disintegratin'

This whole crazy world is just too frustratin'

And you tell me over and over and over again my friend

Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

Think of all the hate there is in Red China

Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama

Ah, you may leave here for four days in space

But when you return, it's the same old place

The poundin' of the drums, the pride and disgrace

You can bury your dead but don't leave a trace

Hate your next door neighbor but don't forget to say grace

And you tell me over and over and over and over again my friend

You don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

You don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

The song that's been running through my head is Phil Ochs's "Another Age," esp. the lines "We were born in a revolution, and we died in a wasted war." Sending this one out to you, Vlad, and all your Soviet holdover cronies.

Oh yesss! This and the Kingston Trio’s Merry Minuet. “The whole world IS festering with unhappy souls …and what nature doesn’t do to us, WILL be done by our fellow man.”

Or, as they introduced it on the LP, "The Kingston Trio plays John Foster Dulles." I learned a lot from songs like that, and my father's commentary on them. (He was not a fan of either Dulles.)

Well, it looks as if the noose is tightening.

Expand full comment

Maybe. Just like the noose has been tightening around t-RUMP's fat flaccid neck for months and months, and yet he keeps right on breathing normally.

A...B...Normal???

As in: not gasping for breath

The comments and your assessment is very good news. What is to stop Putin from taking things out on or in the seas? He has been known to knock off cables that are underwater that provide communications throughout Europe and NATO countries.

Are you saying Russia might intentionally shoot down a Russian passenger jet and blame the West?

Expand full comment

No. Any passenger jet from western states flying over eastern Poland or Hungary or Slovakia.

Russia has shot down passenger jets before…

Let’s hope the measures stay in place a good long while…
