This is my day to write my Salon column for tomorrow morning — which I highly recommend reading when that time arrives, natch — and I wasn’t going to post anything on Substack today until this came in from the Morning Consult poll:
A whole raft of psychologists disagree with you. As well as speech experts. Besides he is pumped up with who knows what drugs and a body cannot take that forever.
No, a whole raft of “psychologists” do NOT think he’s senile. They think he has some deficits, especially related to speech, as well as exhaustion and stress, but not “senility,” which is a word used to describe Alzheimer’s … As for being “pumped up” on drugs— you are seriously buying the Republican line, I see. [I have read about methods to give diplomats the ability to cope with jet lag on overseas trips, including some pharmaceuticals, but that does not mean that Joe BIden is pumped up on drugs to get him through his tenure in office. BTW, watching what Republicans accuse others of doing is a good indication of what they tend to do themselves — They are masters of Projection…Especially The Donald.]
"No, senility and Alzheimer's are not the same thing: Senility -
An outdated term that was sometimes used to describe age-related cognitive decline in older adults. It can also refer to a gradual deterioration of the brain due to old age, resulting in memory loss and mental abilities."
These are aspects being looked at very closely by entire large groups of psychologists for a long time who've been watching him in public, sharing notes, and been barred from speaking out by the American Psychiatric Association for political reasons i.e. the Goldwater Rule of 1973. See Dr. Bandy X.Lee, among many..
As a pain management therapist myself for 40 years I would easily note his disorientation to reality, starkly seen here, and often part of deeply chronic pain not necessarily the physical sort.
Baloney. I’ve been around since we started to sideline the term “senile” — it was a catchall term that absolutely included Alzheimer’s, and mostly referred to the kind of loss of mental acuity involved in Alzheimer’s, before we understood the reality of Alzheimer’s. NOW, we are aware of various age-related changes in cognition and acuity, but they don’t rise to the level of what we used to call “senile.” Somebody rewriting the reality of our past use of language notwithstanding …
{And I understand the prohibition about “diagnosing” without direct examination, which of late has been loosened somewhat, since there are SOME conditions that are subject to “recognition” from afar — blatant narcissistic behaviors over time in public, for instance. Narcissism is a psychological and behavioral personality disorder, not a disease like Alzheimer’s. Some aspects of Alzheimer’s might be apparent in public, but Alzheimer’s IS medical, and one must know if the symptoms are actually the result of that condition, or are they brought on by other factors, other diseases, prescription meds even … So, I stand by my statement that Joe is nowhere near senile, though he is aging and showing effects of stress and exhaustion.
Trump has CLASSIC Narcissistic Personality Disorder, as noted by his own niece, who IS a psychologist and who DOES know him up close ad personal. Trump is also showing other signs of cognitive decline, similar to those attributed to Biden, and they are age related and perhaps stress related, too, so one must actually diagnose those to know what causes them. Maybe drugs. Does Trump take drugs? He claims his opponents do, and he’s a champion at projection, so ….
This BS about Biden is ridiculous. What reward does someone get by trashing the president . And the information is wrong . He has not been seen by a raft of psychologists.
In fact those doctors who have seen him say otherwise . But he’s stepped down . And you’re still going after him . He’s been a great president done some real work for the majority of the Country . Yet ‘ he doth persist’ . Get a new project . Collect Stamps or something .
I know of no drug that can make someone on their way to cognitive difficulty sound sharp as a tack. Were there one, its maker's stock would be the new Apple.
I've never understood the logic of voting for Robert Kennedy: suely they must know it is a wasted vote? Why even vote at all? Could someone explain it to me?
Nothing is for certain of course, but I think Trump in his heart knows that all is probably lost because he is already saying the election will be rigged again. So when he loses all the MAGA nut cases will be up in arms and some quite likely will take up arms like the last time as on January 6 when several people died either directly at the scene or indirectly later, not to mention the many serious injuries and PTSD effects.
Joe gave a pretty good speech today regarding changes he wants to make to the Supreme Court: Of course Speaker Johnson had announced any such bill would be dead on arrival. Can you imagine what a wonderful country we'd have if Republican lawmakers (including the conservative justices at SCOTUS held the same values. sense of integrity justice; honesty and fairness that our current president and most Democrats hold dear?
Joe put together a Commission on all things SCOTUS in his first year (if memory serves me) in office. They finished it long before the 2nd year of his term. He sat on it and held it for the campaign. Rarely disagree with you, however, the venue, the speech and its contents were purely naked politics. Not a single thing in there can be accomplished w/o wide bipartisan support and the bar for a Constitutional Amendment is out of reach for anything unless it is crisis-driven, Fingers crossed he ran the entire matter past Kamala before he announced the trip.
Shadowland, you are absolutely right. He did mention the commission, but as you say in effect a snowball's chance in hell of passing. Which is sad because it would strengthen our democratic system, make the justices accountable, via an enforceable code of ethics and a ruling that they must recuse themselves if a conflict of interest, as well as term limits. But the Republicans don't want what's good for the country, but rather what good for the the Republican Party and for their hold on power. .Bide, even though he now has the absolute immunity meant for Trump knows the danger of that for the future stability of our democracy. Frankly if I were him I'd use it right now to make the changes via executive order and to hell with the Republicans.
President Biden is still the president until Jan. 20. There is something to be said for giving a speech re Supreme Court. Consider it putting down a marker. If VP Harris wins, Dems win House and keep Senate, they can take it up. Reasonable to speak very publicly on that subject right now.
Agree with your sentiments, Robert. The substance of the speech is spot on. At one time being on the right side of right/wrong and the right side of history made a difference. Not sure when that changed or perhaps it didn't exist at all.
Power granted SCOTUS? Now thagoes to a person's first principles, if they have them.
Might come down to one's philosophical and practical view of power. Am of the school of thought having power and NOT having to use it is a mark of a great leader. Yes, there can be an exception or two along the way to remind those who question the power one has.
US Presidential power is intoxicating and highly addictive. Trump is a weak leader hence he defaults to its use, abuse, and misuse. O is a great leader, but rarely used it.
Joe is a good man, a good husband, and a father. Saw signs of Joe being intoxicated and addicted to the office, not its power. Much prefer he doesn't close his political career by wielding a sword. Lots of chit could go wrong when a person hasn't honed the skill of wielding the sword.
Shadowcloud you are both a philosopher and a poet :)
Yes, rare indeed for humans to handle power with grace. The Supreme Court Justices handle it with disgrace; same as Trump. An extreme example is when ordinary people are given absolute power as in Nazi Germany. Had there been no war the butchers and bakers and candlestick makers would likely have lived their entire lives without hurting a fly, (at least most of them), but after donning that Nazi uniform, and quickly realizing they could shoot anyone they wished without having to answer to anyone they turned into monsters overnight. When the deathsquads were formed to round up the Jews and ship them off to the death camps or just kill them where they were they didn't hesitate. There are people in this country who given the same circumstances would do the same under Trump if he so ordered them to. They have already committed violence in his name. They make death threats to even fellow Republicans as in the case of Jeff Duncan who voted for Trump but was labeled by Trump as a RINO, - Republican in name only, because he wouldn't "find" more votes for the orange orangutan. They even threatened to kill Duncan's wife and children So this is the man they want back in the White House and who they have now granted absolute immunity to. I dread to think what he will do with that kind of immunity and new found power: He will be another Putin, maybe even another Hitler.
Here's a sketch of the reasoning in (sometimes) voting for a third party.
Premise 1. You've sincerely given up on the two major parties.
Premise 2 . You think all the votes for either are `wasted,' as you deeply distrust and disagree with their policies. So - you see the
Conclusion: it's ONLY votes for a third option that are NOT wasted.
The arguments against begin with Premise 2, since Premise 1 simply expresses the upshot of some previous thinking and emotional evaluations. Premise 2 relies oin there being no large and important enough differences between the two major parties and their presidential slates.
Defeat that assumption and we reach your conclusion: that in fact it IS the third party voters who are wasting their votes!
She will run away with this election. Darn Old Trump is already conceding that the race will be stolen.
I only ask one thing of Biden and Harris in the months after her election: Do not be magnanimous toward Trump and his enablers who have spit on the Constitution. Make them grovel. And most of all, let Trump be prosecuted to the full extent of his lawlessness. NO PARDON. No gesture seeking to unite the country that these unapologetic bastards have sought to destroy. [My secret hope is for Biden to exercise his unqualified SCOTUS-given immunity and summarily lock Trump, Cannon and the Injustices in separate Rikers Island jail cells for ten years for obstruction of justice and their willful actions to aid and abet tyranny. Good Christians--everyone of them!]
Lots of people have been commenting on how nice it is to have someone “normal” running. They may have loved Joe, but the media harping on his age wore everyone down as it combined with the Trump weirdness (points for using “weird”!). We can do this!
Joe Biden is "normal." The problem with Joe was he was burning the candle at both ends and it was wearing him out. I still think he would have beaten Trump but we, and he, are a lot better off now.
Long before the media invoked the word age inside the cross tabs of poll after poll, survey after survey, and focus group after focus group reached a consensus that Joe's age was holding down his support and approval numbers. In this matter long is defined as 2 or more years.
The skills, knowledge, and wisdom we acquire are subject to age and most are perishable past a certain date by individual. Joe's heart and spirit were willing and able. That's not enough in a 24/7365 environment.
PS Haven't seen/heard Kamala and normal used in the same sentence. Unique beginning with her name and heritage. First presidential candidate that can be favorably compared to O, only different.
Just got off the Zoom call with Women for Harris. Supposedly over 250,000 people came. They had a variety of female speakers and at the end was Chelsea Clinton who was great. So I heard White Dudes had their own event tonight also where 123,000 people attended but raised over $3 million!! The Donald might as well just bow out right now because KAMALA WILL BE OUR PRESIDENT! Get used to saying “Madame President”!

However, no voter bump from the assassination attempt or the convention- which in the past always happened to the candidate. Instead the game changer happened when Biden put country first, stepped aside, and Kamala Harris took over-- not just the nomination and the front pages-- but put Donald in the rear view mirror as she drove forward- according to the polls this week.
First came the national polling, right after Biden's announcement, where Trump lost his leads not only nationally but appeared to be losing or at least tied in the battleground states. Then Kamala broke all records by receiving 100 million in small donor contributions in one day and 200 million in three days. Next came polling where blacks, Hispanics and young voters favor her by many points over the insurrectionist. In one small Michigan poll, tRump received nothing among black voters while even Robert Kennedy Jr. got eleven.
In a national Ipsos poll for US ABC News that was conducted Friday and Saturday (July 26-27), Harris’ net favourability surged to +1 from -11 before Biden’s announcement. What has always been missing in my mind is a concise counter to the on going MAGA attacks on immigration. Forever the attack has been the border gates are wide open and Dems are doing nothing to discourage illegal immigration. I know that Kamala was not the Border Czar, rather she was assigned to work with Central American countries on ways to stop the flow “before it starts”. I wish that Biden, through executive order, or the Dems through concerted response could offer a positive action. Hope they take advantage of the recent momentum shift to include these border issues sooner than later. If I have missing something here please advise.
Keep in mind in the early days of Joe's first month he signed Eo after EO overturning Trump's w/o asking having first game it out. The rest is history.
Then in the 3rd year said hey about the Senate (after losing the House in the midterms) try to work on legislative deal. By thgat time the numbers and the clock were against him. Had he signed an EO first that limited border crossing, then asked the Senate and House to work on a bi-cameral deal, the issue woulda been moot. Was an awful miscalculation in the practical sense and political sense. Blaming Trump for interfering in the matter when Joe held all the cards was as silly as trying to ape Reaganomincs with Bidenomics.
Now we run the risk of a Trump presidency with a Papers Please Policy. Those never start or end well.
Am not white. Been pulled over many times in AZ for driving red yet never been issued a warning or ticket. Same happens to brown people and black people. Will get many times worse if Trump's Round'em Up, send them to camps, and then deport them comes to pass. Them is going to include people not carrying the right papers whatever the fuck Trump Adm says is right. The supermajority on SCOTUS have no love for non-whites. That include Uncle Clarence who wouldn't survived his confirmation hearing if it weren't for Joe. Keep in mind Jore refused to allow 3 other victims of Thomas's to testify AND later on, took credit for being the first person to shine a national light on sexual harassment in the workplace. ~Brilliant~
Hope is back. We now get to choose sanity over senility and psychopathy.
But he is not senile…

~Brilliant~
