This is not hypocrisy. This is rage that exceeds Nixon’s fury at his keen feelings of being outclasses by the “best and the brightest.” Yale law grad Thomas cannot get over his own rage at being marginalized. But rather than using it to make good trouble, he allowed it to curdle into entitlement. His claims over women’s bodies manifested as a penchant for pornography. His talk of Walmarts and RVs transmogrified into $500k of vacations. Nothing, nothing could assuage his sense of injury. He needs to retire to spend more time with his therapist — or to get one. This isn’t greed. It’s pathology.

This reminds me of the infamous dinner at which Obama made fun of Trump. The racial complications are dizzying.

Expand full comment

The comparison of trump to Obama as father, husband, in intelligence or morality, proves white supremacy as the lie it truly is.

Thomas hates being Black while Obama embraced it.

Hill passed a polygraph test. Thomas probably failed one. (It would make sense that he was given one and the results were negative. Or it was known he was lying so why bother. )

Loved this! That man has been corrupt since (actually before) the day the he was confirmed. The Supreme Court is not bound by any ethics rules, as are other judges. And it shows.

This guy, Clarence Thomas, is and always has been 100% creepy; constant lying is just one part of his creepiness. This is on full display in this great book: Strange Justice: The Selling of Clarence Thomas Hardcover – January 1, 1994

by Jane Mayer (Author), Jill Abramson (Author).

Yes, this is an old book, almost 30 years old, but, boy, did these authors have him pegged!

yes, it's a devastating book. shortly after it was published, there was a massive media campaign to discredit it. but it ultimately came to nothing. the powers-that-be were THAT upset by it.

Any anecdotes from his time at The College of Holy Cross? (Have been treated to a few)

I've heard LOTS of stories about CT in Yale Law School, where he presented himself as a firebrand...wearing overalls to remind the well-heeled that he wasn't one of them and endlessly quoting Malcolm X speeches he'd memorized. was it genuine back then? who knows? and at this point, who the fuck cares?

in his most recent collection of essays, Randall Kennedy has a very eloquent essay on what a reckless, destructive force CT is. I recommend it. Kennedy does make the point I see everywhere that CT is considered a really nice guy but that it's of no importance, given the destructiveness of his actions over and over again.

Replied in length only to have Substack eat it in its entirety. The primary theme was AJ Thomas's pivot from quoting Malcolm X to becoming Uncle Clarence due to him nevah evah being comfortable in his own skin combined with his lust for $$$. Not a unique occurrence for any inauthentic person. And yes, lust was intentionally chosen.

Invoked Holy Cross due to it being a Jesuit institution. He sure learned all about the temptations, dangers and downsides of all forms of lust there from his educators as well as the other so-named deadly sins. Oh, 95% certain HC was not co-ed when he attended/graduated.

Conclusion: AJ Thomas aka Uncle Clarence is a very weak, inauthentic man. The weak are easily manipulated and easily tempted.

Don't care about his reputation as being charming. Inauthentic folk can be very charming to mask who they really are. The truth of a person is only found in their character or lack thereof.

Thank you for the comic relief after the devastating “Tennessee 3” incident yesterday! This person ( Clarence) is beyond despicable (I’ve been using that word a lot in the past 24 hours). Hoping we are finally at the “what goes around comes around” point for him and his lovely & delicate bride.

ProPublica has done the hard work that Democrats should have done years ago. Now that they have exposed Clarence as the corrupt SOS that he is, the Dems should go for the jugular. Durbin should open hearings into not only Thomas, but the financial shenanigans of Justice Kegstand. Force all of the evidence into the public square, and call for their resignation on a daily basis. House Dems should introduce articles of impeachment even though MAGA SINO McCarthy and MAGA Child Molester Jordan will never allow them to go forward.

… Also the financial shenanigans of CJ Roberts's wife, who has made a fortune trading on his position.

unfortunately, that's true. it's how American politics works, although the actual players have changed, and a whole lot more of it than the Other Side. there were always "rascals" and "scoundrels" in Congress, but the crazy sense of entitlement at this level just doesn't seem to be like anything I remember, which makes me very nervous about solutions.

This was Thomas's education before college: "St. John Vianney's Minor Seminary on the Isle of Hope, where he was among its few black students. He also briefly attended Conception Seminary College, a Catholic seminary in Missouri."

I mention this because I was told that his schooling with the nuns fucked him up and that there was some identity issue. If this is correct, the preponderance of white students may have been part of the equation. He has, as an example, never accepted that he was a diversity hire. (He has, in fact, voted against affirmative action whenever possible.)

He has stained the high court immeasurably and of course will not have the grace to resign. To resurrect and bowdlerize a saying from long ago, He is no credit to his race.

Expand full comment

Clarence has been reported to hate affirmative action, wants to eliminate all traces of it, because he believes people think it was responsible for all his advances, academic (through Yale Law School) and professional. Does that need comment?

I see he jut issued an official statement that they had been family friends for years and had shared vacations and he had been told early on he didn't have to disclose that since that friend had nothing pending before the court. .

He said nothing about any paid for trips so of course no money figure was mentioned, but if indeed it amounted to hundreds of thousands of dollars did he declare that on his taxes? Also when an ultra conservative friend with common political beliefs spends all this money on you and casually mentions in dinner conversations certain changes he'd like to see in the country and a case comes before you not affecting him directly but knowing his preferences in the matter it would seem natural you would want your very generous friend to be happy. . .

all completely true, but in SCOTUS, there are no standards, so...

about this particular thing, CT is nothing if not "originalist."

They are a law unto themselves, an extension of the Republican party, same as that judge in Texas that just essentially became the new boss of the FDA and assumes he can ban any drug the party doesn't like. I never like CT since the original confirmation hearings, it was obvious Anita Hill was telling the truth and he was lying just as happened with Kavanaugh and his accuser. The GOP couldn't care less about character, only about putting people in power that will weaken the democratic system to the point that they are fully in control. Our only hope id s the young people getting fired up over the GOP's negative positions on all that is fair and good for society as a whole and will vote in droves overcoming the inequities of the GOP's sneaky gerrymandering shenanigans in the red states. But back to CT, look in his eyes, The man has a very dark energy about him. he has no soul.
