E. Jean Carrol makes me think of the description of a woman in “John Brown’s Body”: “… as slightly made and as hard to break as a rapier blade.” This nameless flabby oaf, afraid to fight and holding in contempt the courage of those have borne the battle, is not the one who can break her.
She certainly has way more courage than all the Republibootlickers in Congress who are folding their spines in half refusing to support the negotiated deal on border protection that would free up funding for Ukraine. What a disgusting moment in US history.
If you had told me back in 2014 that this is where we'd be in 2024 I'd have thought that was insane. Now I know that millions of people in the US are in desperate need of cult deprogramming.
Alina Habba (Trump’s lawyer) pressed Carroll during cross-examination on whether she “enjoyed all of the attention.” Carroll responded, “This is not the kind of attention I enjoy,” as her lawyer rose to object. Speaking over both her lawyer and Habba, Carrol continued: “But once I spoke up — I wanted people to know that a woman can speak up and win a trial. I wanted people to know. It was a major victory, and I wanted people to know. I don’t want to be quiet now. I’m 80. It’s not right to try to make women be quiet. It’s been going on for too long.”

True. Also true ,the friend Ms. Carroll confided to Ms Abba during cross that she wrote a letter to her daughter that Ms. Carroll told her she did enjoy the attention. Now it's up to a jury to sort out or cancel out conflicting witness testimony.
The larger point being civil and criminal cases are not AS Seen On TV. There are bound to be conflicts and contradictions due to the human condition. And in this matter Trump and his attorneys will highlight any and all to the jury.
What Trump engaged in that dressing room to Ms. Carroll , then publicly while President and after is indefensible. And Trump made it more painful for both Ms. Carroll and self by failing to settle the matter. Reinforces his continued bad judgement which alone should disqualify him from returning to the White House.
I continue to hold a vision of him wandering, in a wrinkled, dirty, and disordered former suit and topcoat, among the garbage bins in the alley behind Trump Tower, muttering and breaking into occasional shouts, a mishmash babble of fractured echoes from his rally speeches, leaning into a dumpster to rummage through boxes of paper, rambling "I used to be a really big deal, you know that? I was a billionaire! I had crowds of millions! Biggest crowds in the history of this country! I saved millions of lives from nuclear war! Best President of all time!... I should call Vladimir. Maybe I could visit, stay in his dacha. I bet it's pretty nice.... HEY! Can I borrow your phone? Hey, YOU, LADY! Can I borrow your.... She ran away. NASTY WOMAN! TO HELL WITH YOU! YOU'RE NOT MY TYPE! Can't even borrow a goddamn cell phone anymore...."
Equally telling is how he's attacking Nikki Haley. I can see him getting similarly vicious with her because of her political threat to his image. And how will that reverberate with the female electorate?
thank you for putting all these thoughts together into one newsletter. sometimes the point of a news story, even this one, can get lost in the details over time. E. Jean Carroll is a brave woman who has publicly confronted a high-profile rapist at great risk to herself, and she has persisted. she and I are of an age (80) to have seen many such opportunities derailed for other women, and she is the one we must honor for opening a new door. in E. Jean's name we must vote with our heads and hearts to support this moment and the candidates who would keep the door open.
So true, but is anyone paying attention? Or rather does it matter to any of the Trumpettes and their ilk? And tonight Drumpf is apparently trying to strong arm the Repubs to declare him the nominee now, no need to bother with elections. We have to eradicate the Orange stain from our body politic.
Unfortunately, too many people in this country hate women and think that Trump's record of sexual assaults is just fine. Time for women to draw inspiration from the bravery of Ms. Carroll and fight back.
And, sad to say, not ALL the woman-haters are men. There are women whose self-loathing must be epic and their self-esteem below zero. Think of them-- the ones who proudly wear t-shirts that declare "Trump can grab my pussy any time!"
They make me shudder. I have known a few of them and they truly hate themselves, but they really detest smart, independent women. They are the women saddled with pigs for husbands and too many kids, and they want every woman to be as miserable as they are - hence their opposition to abortion and birth control. Their attitude is, "if I have to go through this shit, so do you".
Thank you. I've been doing reproductive rights work for many years, and it always struck me that too many people wanted women punished for having sex for any purpose other than procreation. Revenge of the ignorant and vindictive.
You just stated my EXACT position on the anti-choice/punitive pregnancy people! They care nothing about fetuses, and even less about the unwanted child after its birth; all they care about is punishing women for having sex for any reason other than procreation within a heterosexual marriage.
Depraved Defendant Trump, for all his German heritage, has misunderstood Marx and Engels. They did NOT write, "Sexualstraftäter dieser Welt, vereinigt euch!" (Sexual Predators of the World, Unite!)
evangelicals enthusiastically support a convicted rapist. I can't say enough about the strength that E. Jean Carroll has and how much I support her, and all women.
This is just semantics, but one can be convicted only in a criminal prosecution. He was found liable for damages in a civil suit. Unfortunately, he can't be sent to prison for raping Carroll.
I'll take your word for it. I wouldn't use "guilty" in a civil case, but the judge might have been speaking loosely. He would never have said "convicted," however.
Yes, he did. That came up, I believe, as follows. After the jury found him liable for sexual assault, Carroll said that he raped her. Trump filed suit for defamation, saying that the jury did not find that he raped her. The judge threw out the suit, saying that the jury had found that Trump's assault did not fit the definition of "rape" under New York law, but, in common parlance, Trump had raped her, and Carroll was entitled to say so. I do not know the definition of "rape" under NY law or why, according to the jury, Trump's assault did not fit that definition. I read somewhere that Trump had inserted his fingers and not his penis into her vagina; that might have been the reason.
E. Jean Carrol makes me think of the description of a woman in “John Brown’s Body”: “… as slightly made and as hard to break as a rapier blade.” This nameless flabby oaf, afraid to fight and holding in contempt the courage of those have borne the battle, is not the one who can break her.
You must be talking about the insipid clown Penelope, I utterly hate to say his name. 🙏
She certainly has way more courage than all the Republibootlickers in Congress who are folding their spines in half refusing to support the negotiated deal on border protection that would free up funding for Ukraine. What a disgusting moment in US history.
Disgusting, and even more embarrassing. How any sentient woman, of most any age, can admire this sac of putrid misogynistic pus boggles the mind.
If you had told me back in 2014 that this is where we'd be in 2024 I'd have thought that was insane. Now I know that millions of people in the US are in desperate need of cult deprogramming.

Do I hear an 'Amen?'
She gets one from me. Amen x 1,000.

Hanna is a pig, a complete disgrace.
Habba - Damn autocorrect!
Right on!
AMEN!
Trump is a pig. He's already been adjudicated a rapist and a fraud. Between E. Jean and Tish James he should be left penniless. And homeless.

From your mouth to God's ears,as they say.

"Uppity women" drive him apeshit. What a pathetic creature it is.
I'll always remember the vision of Nancy Pelosi clapping and ripping up his SOTU speech and reading him the riot act in the Cabinet Room!
Yes!!!
Big mouth, small brain, small unit, and no balls at all.
As Elaine once said, Fake...Fake...Fake...Fake!!!
E Jean Carroll is such a profile in courage. Limitless respect for her.
The convicted sex abuser who wants to be the R nominee for president is…scum.
I don’t usually believe in calling names. Bit he’s earned an exception.
Love the way in a trial about the amount of his liability for his crime he still bragged and lied about how much money he has.
What a stupid loser.

Amen, sister. I'm 74 and I love watching Ms. Carroll hit Trump in the balls (if he has any) with the legal equivalent of a 2x4.
If you've ever read what Stormy Daniels has to say about her encounter with him, he hasn't got much of anything!
If I recall, she said three inches.
And a lot more!
Mushroom boy...
He does not!
She is amazingly brave and an inspiration. She’s 80!
Well stated. She is a tough woman indeed. The backlash in November is going to be epic.
E. Jean Carroll is a beacon of light! Thank you for your elegance and courage!

🤯😡🤬🤬🤬 I had not heard this...! How very "authoritarian" of him. He is utter scum. Slimy, vile scum.
I hope she breaks him in every way.
8 figures perhaps will shut his big stupid mouth!!
I fear nothing will silence him except a jail sentence.
I'm thinking 245 million.....or something like that.

Very well said. Excellent insight.

It's also an evangelical Christian thing...women are merely chattel, subject to the whims of the man - law of the bible, so they say!
Precisely. They are into power, control, and punishment. Their hatred of women is all encompassing.
I couldn't believe that there are such t-shirts, so I googled, and whaddayaknow?
Yup-- these women have to be seen for us to believe anyone that stupid, ignorant and self-hating could possibly exist!
To all women I say "fight like hell or you won't have a country anymore."
If trump ever gets to prison, maybe he'll get get a big, strong bad man boyfriend.
Unfortunately, in the remote chance that he goes to prison, it will be the "white collar" kind.
Thank you LT. I heard that the slime is going berserk at the moment oh well
Great, necessary piece.

“Evangelicals” are a nothing less than a political party…. a cruel, regressive one that wants white men in power and nice, submissive little wives.
