Before we get too excited about the parallels between Watergate and the current investigation, let's remember that the GOP was a different organization in the 1970s. It contained many decent, law-abiding individuals who respected the Constitution. Today's GOP consists of a bunch of criminals whose goal is to destroy democracy and replace it with what amounts to a fundamentalist Christian theocracy, but with t-Rump as their god. It's naive to expect today's GOP politicians to put country and Constitution above loyalty to their lord and master.
Yes, worse than naive: deluded. And Nixon was much smarter than the orange fool, and more corrupt but he was also loathed by the GOP establishment, precisely because he was so distasteful and vile in so many ways, it was his toxic personality, his paranoia and need to outdo everyone that brought him down more than his crimes. Today, the GOP is terrified of t-rump, while he is also loathed for his boorish, ignorant, dangerous mind, the only ones with the courage to stand up to him are people like Liz Cheney, who are already pariahs in the GOP for her push back against the leader. I don't see this following the same template as Watergate. I would love to be proven wrong. What an upside down world when Pence and Cheney may save democracy.
Oh…right…bubble “burster!” How do the people who feed at the FoxNews trough, explain the multiple former anchors and reporters who’ve left the station because they just couldn’t lie any longer.
Where do we send messages of admiration to Ms Cheney? What she’s doing now is far, far better than anything she’s done previously in life. And it is clear that it is in the face of the Trump guillotine.
Do you remember how Paul Harvey stood with Nixon to the very end, and then brokenheartedly realized the truth. I don't expect Fox News follow suit. That's a big difference between then and now.
How fabulous that you had an important hand in bringing Watergate to its knees!! Totally forgot about Bebe and you laid it all out, plain and clear. So would you say, sans Cheney and Kinzinger, that all Republicans are just criminals?
I hope when they do the hearings in January its in Prime time and covered on all the networks. They’ll either not cover it on Fox or just dip in when it works for them.
There was a deli on the main drag of Williamstown, MA in the years after Watergate - through the 80s - that had a huge roast beef sandwich called the Bebe Rebozo. I think they dropped it when people stopped knowing who he was. Keep it up Lucian!
Unfortunately, it seems that most of the Republicans are either complicit, culpable or complacent, as they were with both of the impeachments. Have not heard a word yet about the security review being performed by retired General Russel L. Honoré nor the alleged tours days before January 6th conducted by several members of Congress when Covid restrictions prevented tours.
What a fascinating story! Why is it that so much money laundering appears to go on down in Florida? Do they have an abundance of laundry mats, easy access to escape mechanisms, lots of convenient casinos, or what?
I love this:
"The break-in at the Watergate was a crime, and so was the break-in at the Capitol. Covering up the planning and organization behind Watergate turned out to be a crime that brought down a president. It’s looking like covering up the same kind of conspiracy involving the assault on the Capitol will turn out to be yet another crime, one that may bring down several members of Congress and get them charged with a federal crime that Liz Cheney has already named out loud.
Things are getting interesting, folks. The assault on the Capitol is being Watergated."
Aside from the fact that I have some family (Pensacola and Ft. Walton Beach) and two friends (Naples), I comfort myself with the sad fact that eventually it will drop back into the ocean from whence it came. And that Mar a Lago will be swimming with fish...real fish, not the fishy kind!
Another one of your mega-revealing columns!! I didn’t know about the theater where the committee did its work, because I was, well, thirteen-years-old at the time. I was, however, riveted to the tv coverage along with my renegade mother. She hated Nixon with a passion. I was forever moved by the Republicans who had the independence of mind to accept the sad facts about Nixon. Now, my heart is pumping freon for Liz Cheney. This woman may be a pariah in her party. She may hold policy positions that are anathema to me. But she reminds me of Antigone, refusing to comply with the dictates of the king, risking all to do what divine law requires—burying her dead brother. All these thoughts came to me because of your column Lucian. You truly make me feel that all is not lost, despite all the evidence to the contrary, because the history you share tells us we should be awake to the possibility of justice.

I'd love to disagree with you, but your dark analysis is too convincing.
So true. And so ominous for our future.
I'd love to disagree, but I'm terrified you may be right. God help us.
Oh…right…bubble “burster!” How do the people who feed at the FoxNews trough, explain the multiple former anchors and reporters who’ve left the station because they just couldn’t lie any longer.
The Fux News faithful dismiss those who left as RINOS and losers. Such departures have no effect at all on their devotion to tRump.

She is the Mr. Sam of this generation, wouldn't you say?
So, you don't see the value of her leading the charge against the GOP traitor class?
Really?
“At the end of the day, Liz Cheney is still a Cheney, the daughter of a war criminal.
What she is doing with the 1/6 committee is the One Good Thing she has ever done [in office].”
Like I said, normally TC I agree with you in every way.
Wow! Excellent! "Watergated!" Thank You, Lucian, for past and current intrigue, and hopefully current results!!

Certainly dishonest, disingenuous, disgusting and despicable! Okay, yeah, criminals.
More specific:
Republican politicians
The parallels are uncanny. I can only hope that the process speeds along. November looms!
I hope when they do the hearings in January its in Prime time and covered on all the networks. They’ll either not cover it on Fox or just dip in when it works for them.
Which means that the people who most need to watch will never do so, and will keep their delusions intact.
They don't matter anymore.
I always jump to Fox when you know they are ignoring the juicy daily events...cowards!
The pool (press types) will be there, but no “dipping” by Fox!
There was a deli on the main drag of Williamstown, MA in the years after Watergate - through the 80s - that had a huge roast beef sandwich called the Bebe Rebozo. I think they dropped it when people stopped knowing who he was. Keep it up Lucian!
The timing is perfect, get through the holidays, then start the New Year with non stop hearings.
Nailing Gym Jordan...what a bonus!

We were forced to live there for a time. I felt as if I were typing one finger over…really, really out of place!
The Fox denials and obfuscation are bordering on hilarious!
I completely forgot about Bebe Rebozo.
Me, too! But, Wow, it all came back! Thanks Lucian!
Yup. Time to get set up in front of the TV and laissez bon temps rouler!
🍿 🍿 🍿
We are aware of Cheney's loathsome pedigree, having her lead the charge presents a lovely dilemma for the boneheads over at Fox!
