Just to add to one's anger, is the fact that (with some big caveats) the pandemic in the United States toll will soon exceed that of the 1918 Flu pandemic (per the WAPO). True, we have far more people now, and we have better health resources but I can only imagine what could have happened if the same fuckers who are standing in front of one being unmasked and unvaccinated were doing that then. The toll would have been far worse.
We have some of the most selfish, ignorant blathering idiots in the world running this country and states, and then we try to keep safe during it, only to be derided for being sheep by doing our best to stay safe and possibly protect them.
I no longer care about them. They can all go to hell in a hand basket and I'll be cheering all the way down.
You see, I knew what Covid 19 would be like when the husband died of essentially the exact same thing 4 months before it was declared as a pandemic-of "Hypoxia as the primary cause of death with secondary cause being of pneumonia." Exactly what Covid is comprised of.
Yeah, I got vaccinated as soon as possible.
Anyone wanting to die that way, you're a fucking idiot. You deserve to die.
What makes me angriest are the stories of people who can't get hospital care they desperately need because all the beds and ICUs are occupied by unvaccinated people with Covid-19. Equally infuriating are the reports of kids too young for vaccination getting sick because the allegedly pro-life adults around them won't get vaccinated or wear masks, and don't get me started about the idiotic governors trying to prevent schools from taking sensible precautions. (P.S. What stopped me cold in your column was the aside about "stretches of I-10 in Texas which are 26 lanes wide." WTF? I can't even imagine it!)
Everything I eat or need is delivered. The DVM is for the most part a vaccinated, masked, and compliant crew. Lucian we are Polio Pioneers, so stand in line for your vaccine is no big deal. We saw kids crippled and killed by polio. The southern states are beyond comprehension. In 1954 every state rallied for the Salk vaccine and for the Sabin vaccine in 1960. It is in part my anger that keeps me inside with delivery. This is insane.
Tate Reeves is a moron. Mississippi has THE most stringent laws concerning all other vaccines - NO exemptions for religion or other lame excuses. A tad hypocritical I’d say.
I have lived in Tennessee for most of the last 40 years. The state was hijacked by a cult like Republican Party over the last 10 years. Our governor is not qualified for the job and proves his lack of empathy daily. He will probably win re-election in a landslide. Our attorney general is considering suing the Federal government over the vaccine mandate. One of his poorly thought out reasons is that it doesn’t recognize “bodily autonomy “. He has filed suits to restrict abortion access, which seems to not recognize a woman’s right to bodily autonomy. My head often comes close to exploding when I hear this stuff. I feel that we are already in a post democratic society in much of the South and am not sure it can be stopped.
DeSantis has a spectacular Ivy League education and no one would ever guess that now. He fined some cruise line $5,000 for mandating masks and I think vaccines. I can 't keep up any longer with the red state governor callous stupidity. That they are hell bent on securing the votes of the most inept among us tells me there are far and away more stupid people in this country than I ever imagined. The Republican war on education has been an amazing success.
I read that Kayleigh McEnany, 45's last press secretary, has a degree from Harvard Law School. Josh Hawley has degrees from Stanford and Yale Law. Ted Cruz has a Harvard Law degree. Clearly education is not the cure-all we sometimes like to think it is.
I came across this site, and as crude as it is, tells a very sad and sobering story about stupid people getting what they deserve: https://www.sorryantivaxxer.com/
I have to say schadenfreude warmed my cold feelings I felt reading of each of those antivaxxers and antimaskers dying of covid. I honestly feel the world is better off shedding such destructive ignorance from our midst.
Whenever I had read of such covidiots dying my reply has always been: 🙌👏🙌👏🙌👏🎉🎊🍾
oh man..Greece would be nice to be on sunlit islets amid azure Aegean seas, but..to be in a closed shipboard system? Sir, I'm sure you did your due diligent safety research but really, why put yourself at that type of risk now at these uncertain times?
Norovirusea occur on cruise ships frequently. My sister used to cruise all the time. They travel with hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes to clean stair railings, etc. It takes one kid with poopy hands to put people in the bathroom for most of the trip. I grant you that it’s likely better than Florida, but don’t think the ship is super safe, it isn’t. Take care and have a good time.
I am there, too. I understand why people do what they do. I have always understood both sides of things, I understand motivation. or lack thereof. But I am done. I am so angry, so furious at those selfish people that won't wear a simple mask and the complete ridiculousness of school districts spending tax dollars to fight children wearing masks. The idiocracy, it is maddening. They are quite literally preventing us from stopping the pandemic.
It was just as you describe at your CVS: defiant ignoramuses exercising their “personal choice” in our airspace.
Missouri was, of course, a border state during the Civil War.
It is returning to its roots.
It’s one thing for these idiots to kill themselves and their like-minded compatriots. It’s quite another for them to take the rest of us down with them.
Fortunately, I have a home in San Francisco I can escape to. But I leave behind people who just are swimming in rage and frustration that they have to endure such pointless self-inflicted misery & death.
I, too, spent last weekend in St. Louis for a family event. The heat was oppressive, but the absence of care about spreading Covid was even worse. Very happy to return to Colorado.
Here in Southern Arizona about half the people I see in the local Walmart are unmasked including their children. One interesting tidbit I noticed, All the non-masked idiots are white. Every person of color I saw was wearing a mask. Guess we know who the Cult 45 members are.
About "those people": They are not 'evil'. Rather, they are infected by a shared array of incorrect, evil beliefs about themselves, about others, about society and even about reality itself. That is why they may appear 'evil' to us. How did they get this way?
We Americans today are a shallow people. We try on whatever someone is selling, and if we are told it makes us look good, we wear it without further thought. (Think "The Emperor's New Clothes") Media trained us to consume from the first day Momma plopped us down in front of the TV set. And consume we do, without a thought.
Trump may be stupid but he has a feral instinct for that weakness. He sold us a bunch of false noxious beliefs and millions of us internalized them. He now has lots of acolytes in politics and media who continue to sell "The Big Lie" - actually, many lies - that add up to a misunderstanding about reality itself.
The people who live in those lies today, they will not give up easily. It will be hard to deprogram them. It took WWII to deprogram the Nazis.
Prescription? What, by whom, how and when? The challenge is the same as yours in line; do I risk daring to confront the big guy with the tattoos, who may have a 9mm in his belt? Both literally and figuratively for those of us who care, and yet don’t dare.
Very surprising to me I find Reno, Nevada has improved with mask wearing over the last several months. You find very few unmasked people in retail outlets, book stores, and public buildings. The rest of Nevada is a completely different story.
I find it very disheartening that approximately 35% of Americans are obviously stupid.
Mostly their ignorance will knock off a member or two of their families. These people get mild symptoms far too often. I never thought in my entire life I would arrive at a place where I can only say: Sorry, you brought it on yourself as you brought it on us. The sooner you and those like you are gone, the safer everyone else will be.

Everything in Texas is big...hate for women is their specialty!
I have had it up to here with these morons. I barely leave the house any longer. I'm concerned I'll get into a fight.

Thank you for putting my feelings into words. I find it difficult to care about people who feel their right is to make others sick. I’m sharing this.

Which confirms what's been said for a very long time, being educated does not mean you're smart, aware, kind, ethical or decent.

Sorry for the double posting.
I know I'm bad, but..

I prefer to call it "Darwin's Law in action". It really does work.
yes.
used to be that wild beasts devoured stupid people. Now civilization allows them to continue infesting this planet.
schadenfreude is essentially joy in discomfort felt by others
In less than a month I will fly to Greece and get on a cruise ship where every passenger will have both shots as well as the crew.
Remember the jokes about these vessels being petri dishes?
The US is a giant petri dish, now.
Can't wait to leave DeSantistan for safer climes.
oh man..Greece would be nice to be on sunlit islets amid azure Aegean seas, but..to be in a closed shipboard system? Sir, I'm sure you did your due diligent safety research but really, why put yourself at that type of risk now at these uncertain times?
Did you read my details on the current safety procedures???
Details? Where? I reread everything posted herein.
I said ALL passengers and ALL crew have to have both shots.
You don't live anywhere that safe!
with due respect, I read that but didn't think that was what you meant by "details" and was prepared to read more due diligence.
Sorry to disappoint.
Yikes. Remember that cruise ship in the Mediterranean that was overtaken by Norovirus?
Ancient history

Ships safe now due to facts you ignore, thanks for your concern.
Good marketing. Your trust in people you don’t know is touching,
No it isn't, you are fixed and stuck in your mindset, I am following this very closely worldwide, you aren't.
The point: sick people will not be aerovac’t off any cruise ship and anyone with serious respiratory illness will be S.O.L.
I am there, too. I understand why people do what they do. I have always understood both sides of things, I understand motivation. or lack thereof. But I am done. Just spent two days in St. Louis.
My hometown.
I visit once a year for a single weekend.

Walmart people—and the family of leeches that own the chain…best to find a different store.
The soon to die Fox fed racist birthers!

I would question the assumption that the demise of The Third Reich deprogrammed the nazis.
Their tenets and technology have easily slithered into every nation where white entitlement is a given; ‘grown wealthy and assumed positions of power.
With the passing of The Greatest Generation, they now have a clean slate.
My feelings, exactly, Lucian.
Ok with the anger, discomfiture, and description.

They will be weeded out, hopefully, before the midterm elections.
