Yesterday was wonderful on a lot of levels, but one of the loveliest things was the election of Yusef Salaam, one of the Central Park Five, to the New York City Council. Trump demanded that the Five be executed and has refused to apologize even after their exoneration, continuing to hint that the Five were guilty. Now Dr. Salaam is an elected official and Trump is facing 91 felony counts and, if there is any justice, will end up in prison. Who's the criminal now, Fat Donnie?

Salaam’s win is truly sweet. Of course *Rump won’t acknowledge his awful mistake. His toxic faux masculinity and narcissism won’t let him. He never makes a mistake, he says, so he’s content to look like the jerk and asshole he is.

He's a lot more than just a jerk and an asshole. He's a feral hog, a home-grown fascist, and a truly disgusting sack of shit. I never thought I could hate anyone more than I hated Nixon, Reagan, and George Bush, but I was wrong. I look forward to the pig being hauled off in handcuffs. Well, a woman can dream, anyway.

Nah, just thrown into the pig pen with the rest of the Repugnants. Eat slop, you pigs, liars, scammers and Nazi wannabes!

C'mon, Linda, don't hold back. Tell us how you REALLY feel!! I happen to agree with every word!! I can't stand the sight of him nor the sound of his voice, and I hope he strokes out sooner than later.

Love the "Fat Donnie" part in particular. Thank you.

You're very welcome, although I have to confess that it's not original to me. Read it somewhere else and stole it.

Oh we may be screaming into a void of sorts, but you are certainly not alone. Just tap me anytime. LOL.

Poor Glenn. He doesn’t have a lot to look forward to in the coming year. I suspect I will laugh every time I think about that blue house of representative and blue senate. I think we didn’t just tell him no, we said “OH HELL NO!” But Ricky Santorum thinks abortion anger is just a phase. Another moment of hilarity. GOP men may be the dumbest damned critters on the planet.

Seriously. Do they ever listen to women? It not like there haven't been some pretty blatant clues since Roe was overturned.

Expand full comment

Repubs have been using abortion as a vote getter with the “moral majority” since at least Reagan (40+ years) Originally they never planned on actually following through on it, assuming it was already decided policy (Roe v Wade)

But the Federalist Society pushed for judges that were pro business, pro NRA, pro “Christian fanatics”, & anti abortion. Repubs still firmly believe those stances.

They listened to the wrong women for too many years!

Expand full comment

The "dog who finally caught the car" analogy comes up a lot!

Of *course* they listen, but only when women tell them exactly what they want and need to hear, especially DDD (Deranged Detumescent Donnie), something out of the "studly stud" used parts bin.

I also have to keep reminding myself that 50+ percent of white women voted for Trump *twice*. The results in Kansas, Ohio, Kentucky, etc., have given me hope that at least some of those women have lines they will not cross. Probably the non-Evangelicals among them (or the Evangelical women who tell pastor and husband one thing but, hey, no one sees how they vote).

No, Santorum thinks abortion rights are “sexy”! What a piece of garbage this guy is.

I loved Samtorum's twitter post whining about how unfair it was to allow decisions to be made by referendum in Ohio and not the "duly elected" representatives who know better than the common rabble voting. And of course JD Vance echoing the same complaints, the voters should be letting him decide, not them. These guys are all autocrats.

Vance and Mizz Lindsay are hooting about reintroducing their plan for a National 15 Week Ban in the Senate. All I can say is "Go For It, Lindsay, Go For it !"

Ex Senator Santorum, whose name will live forever (at least in American slang) let slip the truth on the TeeVee; Democracy is not good for Republicans.

The biggest problem the Republicans and the GOP have ever met is millions of angry, activist women of child bearing and older ages getting pissed off at their audacity to tell them that they're not in charge of their own bodily autonomy.

I've read (and I'm sure others have as well) some true horror stories of what women in Texas and other states with abortion bans have had to endure when faced with no option but to bear an unwanted child or a baby that would die shortly after birth.

That's where it gets real. That's when women get really pissed off. Even I, who does not have a child, cannot and will not allow anyone to tell another woman that she has no right over her own body or to make her suffer for someone else's phony hypocritical pontificating over being pregnant.

The GOP and the Republican party had best take a long deep breath because baby, they ain't seen nothing yet. We're not going to go away, and I can guarantee Ohio was not the only place where we're going to take names.

Even the "Moms for Liberty" got clobbered yesterday in their races for school districts. Democrats have had enough of this shit, and women especially.

Nothing galvanizes women more than some damn man telling her that her body is a gift from "God" and she has no right over it.

Because we vote now, run for office and occupy state houses, Congress and one of us is the Vice President of the United States.

And we're only getting started.

Too bad, Mr. Youngkin. You can go crawl back into your man cave and weep. We've have enough of you and your ilk.

Women's rage is going to bring down the GOP and all their nasty little enablers. They never learn that trying to harm and control women is a sure way to destroy themselves. I'm 73 and have been a feminist, a civil libertarian, and a reproductive rights organizer since I was old enough to recognize injustice, and I tell you that these clowns are going onto the trash heap of history.

Ah. That's my rant for the day. Thank you for listening, sisters and brothers.

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 as a father with 2 grown daughters who each have children I agree with you 100%. Those idiots actually thought it was a good idea to get rid of Roe, clueless............We may actually get some of our deepest seated problems corrected in my lifetime, that should make you smile Mary. 🙏

Those who support freedom of reproductive choices include fathers, mothers and grandparents of young girls who, once they begin menstruating, can be impregnated through rape, incest or foolishly believing a jr. high or high school boyfriend who persuades them that this is how to prove their love. Menstruation is beginning at younger and younger ages as evidenced by the 10-year old girl who had to leave Ohio for an abortion after having been raped.

I'm in ohio, so it was a really big night!! Good summary, lucian. VA democrats came through for a great win---and so on and so on for the evening. Time to keep up the work---postcards, phone bank and all the rest. Thanks to all out there for doing the work...... And Thanks Lucian for all the good info, encouragement, keen insight, and all the rest---as well as a lot of good stories along the way, from the Village Voice to PA.

I think one excellent thing about this election is this: it is a gift that will probably keep on giving. A lot of people who are usually not politically engaged came out in last night's non presidential election and voted. That means they are paying attention to politics and they will probably continue to be engaged.

Another good electoral day for Democrats. Grounds for cautious optimism for 2024.

But, to your piece from earlier today, the top opinion column on NYT right now is about "concerns" about Joe Biden. Even the visual on that piece is designed to reinforce the image of "old and frail". Looking at their front page right now, election news has disappeared. There is no opinion piece about the election results. But the Biden bashing remains.

Expand full comment

Yeah, that’s all bullshit. I watched a little of CNN late last night because I wanted to see if Tate Reeves was going to lose. He didn’t, unfortunately. Anyway, all that they talked about was how low Biden’s numbers were in the polls! Pissed me off! We have a whole year and I think their campaigners are going to come up with clever ads. Did you see where they created “ Dark Brandon signs in Miami and placed them outside of where the “debate” was? https://x.com/nbcnews/status/1722383454518620620?s=61&t=IVtTJxa5adsQjYd43euA5g

It's not just the NYT either. Even the pundits who write about the election results manage to work in a dig or two at Biden's poll numbers. The likely rematch is between Biden and Trump -- and they're trying to undermine Biden?

Great illo for "the Gulfstream jet still waiting for Glenn Youngkin."

Re the results, I was in the large group of people who predicted, correctly, that the Leonard Leo SCOTUS vote on abortion would swing a lot of elections to Democrats. And it's only begun.

I'm glad that Crista won. Waldron is a DINO but I'm assuming Matt and Schmalzel-tov were both victorious. That means the Republicans still have the majority. I have known Matt Osterberg and his lovely wife for years. I don't agree with him on anything politically but he's a good guy in most respects.

I don't think the voters in Ohio appreciated that the ballots were deliberately confusing so that if they weren't careful they could vote for the opposite of their intention, and they let the GOP know it.

MSNBC carried a good piece by journalist Andrea Grimes on just how many hoops the pro-choice coalition in Ohio had to jump through to get on the ballot. That switch from NO = pro-choice in August to YES = pro-choice in November was part of it. The story is worth reading: https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opinion/ohio-issue-1-abortion-results-rcna123793.

I have voted in every election since 1972 when I voted for McGovern. I have never been polled in all that time. Who are they talking to? Also the next election is anybody's guess as to who will be running. They don't know who will in the race tomorrow let alone in a year. So the polls mean nothing. Biden /trump. Maybe maybe not. Biden will win that for sure. All I know is I'm voting for any democrat over any fascist.

That the remainder of the election slate winners were Republican candidates is significant. Many Repubs had to cross over to vote for Beshear to give him his victory. I was considering leaving the Commonwealth if Mitch's protege had won.

Notable exception: Mississippi's lowlife GOP incumbent beat Elvis Presley's second cousin comfortably for governor, however. A lifelong Dem, Presley had also proclaimed himself a lifelong legal abortion foe. Slow learner, I guess.

Expand full comment

Given that there are basically two parties in MS, the white party and the black party, coming as close as Presley did means a whole lot of white Republicans crossed over and voted for him. 51 percent to 47 percent is close in that state.
