I think Trump is writing his speeches. Stark raving mad.

It seems Putin has played this chess match out and has seen many moves ahead. The nuclear component has not felt this real in a long time.

Wow. Ukraine has been through a lot in the last century+ - WW1, Russian Civil War, Stalinist famine, WW2 and the Nazis, back to USSR, then a few decades of independence, and now this shit. All the while the world is doing a literal slow burn from fossil fuels, and we are ripping nature asunder. And nuclear sabre rattling as the cherry on top. Any hope I've had we could get our collective shit together was already hanging by a thin thread.........getting thinner and thinner.

And what can we do, besides all of the sanctions and economic isolation to sink the Russian economy and probably the world economy while we're at it. An actual military response from us and NATO is a non-starter (I hope!). I'm glad Biden is in there instead of the alternative.......

Why didn't he just say, "Russia's response will be fire, fury and frankly power, the likes of which the world has never seen before." Seems like he stole it from a strumpet he owns here in the U.S.

Damned if we do. And Damned if we don't!

What's worse, accommodating this "balshoye gavno", or calling his bluff?

Either way, I shudder at the possible consequences.

Unhinged is the word McFaul, former US ambassador to Russia said about Putin.

I am now curious about the prospect of internal Russian resistance to this madman.

I was listening to McFaul on MSNBC and he said don’t be fooled by the statement that Russians are fully behind Putin. They’re not but they can’t say so otherwise, they will be severely punished or killed.

I have wondered the last few days about internal resistance. Are there people near him that might intercede? I know there has been very little public pushback, but what of their private thoughts?

I truly do not think so. The amount of nuclear weaponry Putin’s army has is immense and certainly much more than Ukraine’s. Someone on Heather Cox Richardson’s “Letter From An American” Substack page stated he was in Ukraine and he took quite a laiz affaire attitude about things. That was many many hours ago so I am certain he may have different feelings now.

Not initially, but after body bags come home, the economy is sucks, the grand plan won’t look so grand. Think Afghanistan

It will be worse for us because we get 7% of our oil from Russia. Our prices in CA are already $5 a gallon! People have to heat their homes and get from point A to point B.

Tell that to the people in Ukraine. So long as the first priority for America is the price of gas and some short term economic pain we will remain hostage to this megalomaniac. Look at Germany. They are now effectively financing his adventurism by purchasing his gas and oil with their Euros.

Add Bitcoins to that purchasing power too!

Typical KGB thuggery and intimidation, lets not forget, that is all he is.If you're somewhat scared by what he said, just think how scared his lapdogs in the Kremlin are.

Almost makes one long for the days when the CIA/MI5/Mossad could/would eliminate threats like Putin. He is a psychopath and a threat to all who believe in democracy.

Expand full comment

Maybe he is crazy? Any one who actually thinks he can win a nuclear war needs to be somehow eliminated. I wonder if any of the Generals around him might be getting the idea their fearless leader has lost it and just might need to be reprimanded by a bullet in the ear to save the current Russia from turning itself and the rest of the world into a pile of radioactive cinders. MAD depends upon both sides being of sound mind. If Putin isn't we all, including the Russian generals, are all in deep doo.
