These two days of insulting this overly qualified Black woman is nauseatingly shameful. She knows so much more than these Republican legislators do, it's shocking and they still don't know what they don't know. Echoes from the past.
Which makes it even more galling. The politics of personal destruction in full gory detail. They have that ignorant and proud of it base who is as racist as can be.
These Scumbag Republicans have absolutely no moral compass and are only playing to their base. Graham is like a petulant little girl that is angry because he didn't get his nominee from S.C. the rest are palpably just trying to use the camera for fundraising. They are beyond despicable.
it has been becoming apparent to me that, very possibly, Graham's personal favorite might have been someone who wouldn't have been able to pass muster, which might then have pushed these "deliberations" further into the future, possibly even into a time when the Senate's majority party could well be THEM. if this sounds a little paranoid it's not as if there hasn't been enough of it on display these two days to have rubbed off....
We will see an onslaught of new laws in red states to create a modern day Salem. Along with the restrictions on voting rights by minorities these states will revert not to 1950 but 1850, But, here is what I fear further. With the current make up of the SC some of these laws may become the law of the land particularly those where religious standards of behavior supercede and are made superior to civil law.
The hearings this week show many leading GOP conservatives are going to be perfectly OK with book burning and will allow only books which pass their muster to be accessible to young minds. The 2022 and 2024 campaigns are going to be outright culture wars and will have nothing at all to do with democratic governance. As we saw this week, the GOP is going to use the little children as beards for their attack on modernity. It worked in Virginia and it can work elsewhere when parents are terrified into believing "progressive" translates to "pedophile."
They aren't saying so out loud, but, you are absolutely right about the GOP wanting to turn the clock back to 1850, rather than 1950. A recent survey of GOP voters throughout the country, and not just in the South, revealed that ONE-THIRD of them wish the South had won the Civil War, which is another way of saying they wish that slavery could be made legal again.
Just for context, notice how much the quality of news has changed in just a few years. Only a few years ago, this interview with Mike Braun might’ve been overlooked, glossed over, or just plain dismissed. We have come a long way.
Braun is clearly advocating making interracial marriage illegal again, and advocating rolling back other rights, and that is exactly how it has been reported everywhere. Clear and clean. Transparent.
In addition, the damage control that his staff attempted afterwards is being condemned as exactly that: disingenuous bullshit.
The media’s quality of reporting, as often as it is terrible and flaky and misleading and alarmist and slanted to be clickworthy to promote sales, has also improved dramatically. They call a lie “a lie,” which they never ever did only a few years ago, until about the fourth year of the Trump administration. Now, due to George Floyd, the media and everyone else is immediately suspicious if a non-white person dies in police custody, an abuse being committed for generations with scant attention and with impunity. Incidents of civil rights violations and misogynistic/harassment misconduct make it into the news almost every day. I’ll never forget the Central Park story of the birdwatcher and the white bimbo who refused to leash her dog to protect the birds. That story would never have been a headline only a few short years ago: it never would’ve made it past the police report.
We have to be grateful that our attention, and our ability to see the truth of social misconduct, is improving dramatically, and is being reported more consistently and more accurately.
I have been making this statement about voter suppression in particular, a subject that would never be on the front page of any news source even as recently as the Obama administration; but now, in every state, every little obscure law that suppresses the black vote or limits abortions or rolls back gains makes national headlines.
It’s getting harder and harder to get away with being racist and sexist and gender-identity-ist. That is one thing I love about 2022. If you indicate that you are taking society backwards, your shameful words will be thrown back in your face by millions of people, and often in minutes.
Sure, we can wring our hands about all the nasty racist and sexist people out there, but keep this in mind:
This information coming out is due to transparency. The transparency level is at an all-time high.
And for this I am deeply grateful. It’s harder to be a slime and keep it secret.
I really like your positive analysis - it is true!
I am using my social media platforms as political platforms. Lately, I have been regularaly announcing publicly that I will no longer be associating with members of the Putrid Putin Party. Friends who follow me who vote for this party have expressed "dismay" over my posts. I find that heartening because literally, I'm letting them know that I KNOW about them and don't want or need them in my life anymore. It's a big step, but I think it's past time. Some of these folks attend the church (which I no longer attend) and the theater (of which I was a sort of high profile actor for over a decade) as well as several other local organizations. Maybe I am overinflating my own importance, but when I can no longer stomach being in the proximity of these 1850 white supremacists, I can no longer associate with them and I want them to be fully aware of why. Most are white women, but a few are older white men. All have the stench of Cornyn surrounding them.
Bravissimo! I have done the same. I do not want ANYONE-- relative, friend, or mere acquaintance-- in my life if that person is a t-Rump supporter. And I tell them so, in no uncertain terms. I have no interest in butting my head against a wall in trying to persuade them to share my views. They are hopeless cases. I just want nothing more to do with them, EVER.
yeah, Braun's pathetic attempt to "clean up" his remarks is especially disingenuous because he was actually answering a question that was specifically about interracial marriage. how any of this stuff has the remotest impact on anyone besides the people immediately involved continues to elude most of us.
Repukes talk about states rights because they believe in a state religion. They want a theocracy, lead by a rapist, narcissist pathological liar. The seek to diminish America
Nice, James. And this is exactly what they have in common with Putin and other billionaire Russians: the extended family of Repukes and racist Russians all like whites-first society and male supremacy. They all want to take us back to a Stone Age society of the 1800s and before.
Well, the good news is that we have (just barely) the votes in the Senate to confirm this incredible judge, who's so qualified that she puts Senators Hawley, Cruz, Graham, et al to shame.
Lucien, how can you manage to write a newsletter while moving at the same time?
I just want to mention here that voice-to-text often spells Lucian as “Lucien.” If I’m not paying close attention, if I’m not watching to make sure it’s spelled right, the misspelled version with an “e” can sneak through.
“You’re a better man than I, Gunga Din!” If you know how to type on a cellphone in the manner that my children and grandchildren do, won’t you develop carpal tunnel syndrome? If you type on your cellphone as I do, by paragraph 2, you’ll be exhausted!
I have the same issue....as soon as I start trying to type with my thumbs, they seem to become like two enormous hams or something. I've given up on the whole thing and started using a stylus, which I recommend to fellow old folks who share our incompetence.
I talk into my cell phone. Voice to text. It’s a miracle. It’s also the most dangerous toy anybody has ever given me. I can produce this post, for example, in about 60 seconds. Beware, World, of the danger that has been unleashed. 😉
Not sure on what basis Justice Thomas could be impeached, because I don’t think that being married to Ginny is sufficient grounds. But Kavanaugh is another story as he lied three (3) times, under oath.
Let’s all believe in Utopia. Remember what happened the night of January 5, 2021? Two white Republican incumbent Senators were up against a black priest from MLK’s church, and a Jewish man. Democrats, not Republicans. In Georgia, not New England. Challengers.
If you read up on Christian Dominionism, you'll find that their long-term goal is gain enough power to repeal all amendments other than the first two. The GOP has become pretty much indistinguishable from Christian Dominionism.
Thanks for this information. I did a search and just read an article in Salon from October 2021 about Christian Dominionism and Christian reconstructionism. Their theology sounds so familiar to anyone who has been following recent GOP politics.
The Salon article was very good. Several thoughts recurred while re-reading it.
~ It seems they advocate for the Christian equivalent to the Taliban,
~What would our Founding Fathers say to them. In a carefully argued essay titled “Memorial and Remonstrance Against Religious Assessments,” the soon-to-be father of the Constitution James Madison eloquently laid out reasons why the state had no business supporting Christian instruction. Signed by some 2,000 Virginians, Madison’s argument became a fundamental piece of American political philosophy, a ringing endorsement of the secular state that “should be as familiar to students of American history as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution,” as Susan Jacoby has written in Freethinkers, her excellent history of American secularism.
Among Madison’s 15 points was his declaration that “the Religion then of every man must be left to the conviction and conscience of every...man to exercise it as these may dictate. This right is in its nature an inalienable right.”
Madison also made a point that any believer of any religion should understand: that the government sanction of a religion was, in essence, a threat to religion. “Who does not see,” he wrote, “that the same authority which can establish Christianity, in exclusion of all other Religions, may establish with the same ease any particular sect of Christians, in exclusion of all other Sects?”
~ LOVE GOD, LOVE OTHERS: Matthew 22:34-40
Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
America is the greatest civilization of all time, a continental power and a great place to live prosper and feel proud. The United States as a political event in history is horrible. 400 murders every week by mostly teenagers with absurdly powerful weapons. Narcotic addiction and death greater than anywhere on Earth. Two dysfunctional political parties. The House and Senate are totally corrupt and the whole edifice of regulation and administration is so scoured and jumbled by special interests. This can't last, a generation will come and the stench will be enough to cause reform or revolution. The Republicans harken back to cynical Romans who bought and sold emperors and defeated reasonable taxes to keep the Empire alive. Perhaps in a spasm of disgust the United States will disappear, but America with it's brilliance and inventiveness will move on reinvent the politics and live with pride once again.
1950? 1850? I was thinking more akin to the Dark Ages, and the guillotine would be brought back to deal with ANYONE not in the RIGHT’S camp. They definitely want citizens’ rights to be abolished. That Constitution is just a pesky piece of literature. Their are the same anti-maskers, anti-vacciners because it infringes on THEIR rights. But privacy is not infringed upon when THEY are against it: contraception, abortion, same-sex marriage. OMG my head hurts. Judge Jackson is a brilliant jurist, and an amazing woman. The misogynists (Cruz, Cornyn, Hawley, Graham) and terminally stupid (Blackburn) simply can’t deal with her having so much more intellect, dignity and integrity than they. Tough!
There was a time when I would have been more sympathetic to the notion of "states' rights," but that was before I had learned how this concept was used as a cudgel by Dixiecrat racists to fight civil rights legislation or how I've seen it resurrected since 2000 by right-wing activists and trumpistas of the worst sort. If the phrase hadn't been co-opted before as a smokescreen, it well and truly has now.
It's obvious to me now that the so-called "states' rights" crowd wants only to turn back the clock on everything they've hated since the New Deal and Great Society era and return the country to the Gilded Age of open plutocracy, Jim Crow, and unbridled capitalism that reduces most citizens to serfdom and political powerlessness.
The only way a return to "states' rights" ends now is going to be a true second war between the states after a massive population re-sorting as people feel compelled to relocate to escape what they consider unfriendly state governments. This is already happening to some extent. And the resulting disparity and inequality between states will lead to conflict and turmoil. AGAIN.
These hearings are revealing the real plans of the GOP: ban all abortions, make birth control illegal, re-criminalize homosexuality, destroy labor unions, encourage racial segregation and discrimination, destroy public education, defund scientific research, kill public libraries, ban the teaching of history.....all of these things are happening in one state after another-- not all of them all at once, but gradually boiling the frog....
I refer you back to Lucian's essay: Martha Blackburn wanting Griswold vs Connecticut overturned. The GOP "extremists" (who now control the party) don't just want all abortions made illegal; they ALSO want birth control made illegal.
These two days of insulting this overly qualified Black woman is nauseatingly shameful. She knows so much more than these Republican legislators do, it's shocking and they still don't know what they don't know. Echoes from the past.
It's all garbage for their future campaigns...thoughts for the empty headed.

Let's make sure that they can only gnash their teeth. Here's my SCOTUS To Do List:
1. Confirm Judge Jackson.
2. Impeach Clarence Thomas. Remove if warranted. Replace.
3. Impeach Kavanaugh. Remove if warranted. Replace. While you're at it, find out who paid off his debts and bought his seat.
Not sure on what basis Justice Thomas could be impeached, because I don’t think that being married to Ginny is sufficient grounds. But Kavanaugh is another story as he lied three (3) times, under oath.
Clarence perjured too
Please remind me? Kavanaugh’s perjuries had nothing to do with Christine Blakey-Ford or his calendar.
Only in Utopia would this happen. But it’s a nice thought.

haha! Just so. Touche!
Just out of curiosity; where in The Constitution does it mention marriage at all? Have I missed a paragraph or sentence some where?
Nowhere. The Constitution also doesn't say you can have a child or own a car. You are being just a tad disingenuous aren't you?
