If you don't need a vaccine, then you don't need treatment for the virus. Simple. Thins the herd a little quicker.

But you tie up medical staff needlessly for anti vaxxers!

Go ahead, anyone who wants to-- call me a horrible person, because I wish there were a 100% mortality rate among the voluntarily unvaccinated who contract Covid. I recall with great pleasure and hope Neil deGrasse Tyson's observation that members of the GOP are croaking at FIVE TIMES the rate of Dems, because of the vast difference-- which Lucian points out here-- in the percentages of vaccinated people between the two parties. I wish the mortality rate were 100 times instead of a paltry five times. The self-extermination of the stupid is taking way too long! May it PLEASE affect adversely the number of GOP voters who get to the polls in 2022 and 2024.

Guess the Republicans haven't yet figured out that the more Republicans who die, the less there are to vote for Republican candidates. Democrats win! Yeah!

Expand full comment

Yeah they have. That's why they're trying so hard to subvert the election process. Their numbers were aging and declining before Covid, so they've got a head start.

The difference in deaths in 60% Blue vs. Red areas is not surprising, but it is astonishing to see such self-destructive behavior quantified.

Many of us who did all the right things, got our shots and boosters, faced all those quarantines and restrictions, still are putting on those masks when going out, limiting our socializing with friends or family -- after almost two years of this, we are getting pretty fed up with having our lives STILL screwed up by all those dummies who refuse to do the responsible thing.

You never fail to horrify us, sir - but only when necessary. And in this case, it's necessary.

Utterly and absolutely necessary.

yes, now Omicron..

bad news, good news, bad news..

the bad news is that the new virus is much more transmissible.

the good news is that it might be less deadly.

but the bad news: if Omicron is say, around 10 times more transmissible than a previous version,

then for a given population where the old virus infected 1000 ppl, for the same set population now Omicron infects 10,000 ppl. if the old version killed, say 10% of those it infected that would be 100 deaths. but if say Omicron is just HALF as deadly, ie. 5%. that means 500 deaths.

maybe more morbidly good news..Omicron will spread more quickly amongst the unvaxxed gop hordes, thus killing more of them.

i just worry for those who are unprotected such as kids under vaxx age and immuno-compromised ppl. and i feel so badly for caregivers especially in those heavily stricken red states.

lastly..Omicron seems adept at bypassing antibodies, so even if you're double/tripple vaxxed, you can still catch it and worse, pass it to someone close to you.

Just read today that Omicron accounts for 73% of new cases in the US, so perhaps we can assume that those overloaded ICU beds may be filled now with the new strain? Maybe it's more dangerous than previously thought? Two friends who were fully vaxxed and boosted, came down with Covid. One got pneumonia and had to be hospitalized. Both are well enough now. Thank you Moderna! But those folks who are unvaccinated and on ventilators? What a way to end one's life, right here at the holidays. Suicide by virus is apparently the latest "thing" for trumplicans...their version of drinking the Kool-aid, I guess.

yes. omicron is the current variant we now have to deal with.

yes. b.c of it's 30+ mutations, some of which altered the spike proteins such that it evades antibodies that vaccines give us, double and triple vaxxed ppl can still catch it (and pass it on!). it's still uncertain if it is more deadly, but indications seem to say it's at least no worse than Delta. huh. bad enough.

there is no talk of how some of the other mutations can affect us. it comes down to wait and see, to be terribly unfortunate if it worsens Long covid.

i know i'm bad, but i hope trumpite covidiots suffer badly.

Irrational thinking leads to tragedy. The United States is over stressed and millions of decent people are becoming desperate. Spring 2022 might be a time of social and political turmoil. There has to be a credible end to Covid. Who is going to be the scapegoat for all this anger?

This is so sad and frightening.

Unfortunate that covid andTrump and arrived at the same time. Covid sickens the body, Trump sickens the mind. We were already in pretty bad shape before that deadly duo arrived: Record inequality and wealth concentration, student debt, stagnant and declining wages, corrupt leadership . . .

But I am more concerned at this moment about our collective mental state. Mass psychosis is a real thing, and it primes a nation to make toxic decisions. After WWI Germany stagnated and created an environment for its demagogue with a satchel of lies who inflamed anger and a national psychosis. Similar conditions here were right for Trump. He hasn't gone away, and neither have the toxic conditions that made his presidency possible.

Franklin Roosevelt had a nation in dire straights, too, from the ravages of The Great dDpression. But he fought the psychosis on two fronts. He fought the economic problems with effective programs, and he soothed the national angst with his Fireside Chats.

That is what I see sorely missing in Biden. His administration appears to think that it is all about budgets and programs and if they succeed in getting those passed that will heal the nation. That is not enough for a nation wounded emotionally and spiritually. Where are Biden's fireside chats? Are media suppressing them? We need moral and emotional leadership too, just as a congregation needs a just, kind moral minister to lead. Otherwise the forces of darkness will triumph.

Aron Rogers excused himself from mandatory vaccination AND lied in the process, claiming reasons having to do with HIS body, HIS feelings, …ME,,! Me! Me! His lack of regard for those around him and his utter ignorance of public health protocols demonstrated the immaturity of right-wing tantruming. His fiancé, in an interview, thinks it’s hilarious that the public was appalled.

Well, aren’t they just so special?

Meanwhile, hospital ICU beds are 93% full, and this wave has just begun. There will be sick individuals who won’t get life-saving care because of the unvaccinated.

If Aron Rodgers gets Covid, well-- he's a big, strong young guy. Just tell him to go home and sleep it off. Don't waste medications on this POS. (If only doctors could really do this!)

LUCIAN: Basically, everything you say seems true and real. The problem I'm having NOW is that then stats don't seem to sync with the media story. Right now I'm in Coconut Grove, Miami, and life seems totally back to normal. i.e., no masks (or few) and life goes on. There's a side of me that feels this whole thing has gone from believing wholeheartedly in Fauci, the science, Trump's blundering to questioning Fauci (as he appears now in movies) and the CDC woman doing TV updates in designer gowns complete with pearls. My co-singer in the Kingston Trio tells me: "Wear your mask Mike, this new variant is deadly." OK, I get that. But what's really going on? Does anyone actually know? It feels to me like the whole mess, as exhausting as it is, has turned completely political. Are people dropping like flies? I have a hunch the answer is no. And if they are not, what the f**k is really going on?

Expand full comment

Look to the local hospital ICU capacity. How many beds are available? The new variant has less mortality FOR NOW for vaccinated people, but transmissibility is exponentially higher. It will still make you sick; Omicron has killed a few, to date. What they don’t know is the chronic, long-term sequellae —which can be debilitating and chronic. Wear your mask. At the first sign of illness, contact your doctor and see if you qualify for monoclonal antibodies.
