You just cannot forget a dog once he/she becomes part of your life. Some recent Vets with PTSD / anger issues have been encouraged to get a dog. The dog, for some, keeps them from suicide. After all, you can't let your dog down!

Another great story Lucian! I also had a dachshund growing up named Libby. Our pets, I now have cats, are such an important part of our lives.

Thanks. As a Navy brat and a career Air Force officer, with a USNA grad daughter, i love your writing. Cats aren't quite the magnificent companions dogs are. But 4 cats almost equal one dog. Best wishes. Keep writing.

Ok Truscott, you take us along on a daily ride with ample doses of cynicism and disgust directed at the usual cast of characters and then introduce us to the likes of Chute and Ruby. You captured that special bond with man’s best friend. And by the way, I’m not crying you are.

Scratch a cynic and there nothing but sentiment.

Great piece, thanks for it. The only ambition I have left is to live up to my dog's undeservedly high opinion of me, and that's more than enough. Thank you.

Proving that besides writing about politics, you write so beautifully about humans and their faithful masters, dogs, that I found myself near tears. Too triumphant a story, though, to have tears. Thank you for this very personal story that you didn't write to be "touching," you wrote to tell the truth about what it is to give oneself over to love of people and pets.

Lovely. You’ve cut right to the quick of the dog's gift…not a day goes by that my partner and I don’t speak of our Rusty, ten years gone now. All that mongling, and I didn’t even know the proper term for it. I do now.

That's a great piece of writing and it's so true. We miss our Genghis every day. We have a cat now, but it's not the same. Our cat is like having a squirrel in the house. There's no rhyme or reason to anything he does. It's amusing, but Genghis was a real pal.

You just made me smile and laugh as I lay in bed with my little girlie all snuggled up next to me, under the covers. Dogs are like our children. The love they give is unconditional.

I could describe another routine...the Sarge, Ginny, Benny routine. I always say dogs are creatures of habit...but really, who is it that needs that routine?! ❤️

blinking away tears, thinking of the love they patch up for us daily. Remembering pets the way you’ve written memorializes that love in their eyes. thank you.

I adore my cats, but I know they’d eat me if they could.
