Nah, we're all in Oklahoma, or Florida, or South Dakota. Kansas has a sane governor at the moment, but who knows how long that'll last.

The Justice Department needs to get in gear. Trump must be indicted and put into a cell with Bubba. I can think multiple crimes to pursue. Start with Georgia election interference. Cut off the head of the snake. A good start.

I had just completed the Atlantic article before this piece arrived. I read it with my mouth agape. When I moved on to your thorough analysis of both the Gellman piece and our present predicament. I really am terrified.

Well haven't Native Americans had to accept this kind of fascist, untrammeled cruelty from day one of European Invasion? You even called them Indians, talk about declaring them not really existent! I followed the Standing Rock protests with amazement. "The Native American protests against the Dakota Access pipeline have become an international rallying cry for indigenous rights and climate change activism, drawing thousands to the rural area of Cannon Ball, North Dakota". But ho hum, on with the show. Wasn't Dakota the first State to make it legal to plow through protestors with your car? Can a whole society be diagnosed with psychopathy? That's how it looks to me from far away Australia. I feel great sympathy for you, but who was it who said America is the only country to go

directly from infancy to senility without passing through maturity? Surely, not a good advertisement for unfettered capitalism.

“Infancy to senility without passing through maturity” is quite brilliant and now really, really fitting! I am fully vaccinated, including booster and flu shot. May I come to Australia NOW???? Puleeze. Fortunately I live in a very BLUE state, but I fear that the military grade weapon holders will use US as target practice.

Little by little they are dismantling our democratic system So now three or more protestors constitute a riot. in certain states? So if thousands of Trump supporters as in the "protest" on the 6th of January had occurred in those states they could all be arrested? Also trucks and cars could mow them down using self defence as an excuse? do these new laws only apply to Democrats? Will be interesting to see what happens next time the white supremacists gather in protest matches.. Had BLM attacked and the Capitol in injured and killed people the National guard would have been there in seconds. As it is the two generals that said there was an optics problem and would,t allow the guard to deploy are denying everything.

Lucian:

Thanks for amplifying Gellman’s message in his Atlantic article, which I read first thing this morning and sent to everyone I could think of.

By the way, the 1934 Night of the Long Knives was not a purge of Hitler’s opponents, it was the orchestrated murder of the leadership of Ernst Rohm’s Brownshirts, the SA or “Sturmabteilung”, by members of Himmler’s SS — the “Schutzstaffel”.

It wasn’t done in order for Hitler to take power, it took place in 1934, after he had already been elected chancellor the year before.

Hitler correctly calculated that the thuggish Brownshirts, who had acted as security, (in somewhat the same way that the Hells Angels did at Altamont for the Rolling Stones in 1969), by beating up hecklers at beer hall rallies, were not under sufficient control.

To appease the industrialists and the military leaders of Germany that the Nazi party could be controlled and would act with discipline — and not be a threat to the Reichswehr, the German army — he got rid of some of his most important allies during his rise to power from 1923 to 1933.

Trump-Republican Vigilantes are predecessors of the Gestapo. This is terrifying and moving more quickly than I would have expected. The fucker isn’t even in office…did you see that Devin Nunes is leaving Congress to run Trump’s media outlet? He’s going to be successor to Goebbles…as if Rupert Murdoch wasn’t bad enough…

Today's release of the information regarding the behavior of the Trump packed senior DoD staff is alarming.

Fits with everything else going on.

I almost hope the Supreme Court kills Roe v. Wade resulting in a voting onslaught by women and men who don't hate women next election. It needs to be so dramatic that no state can fiddle the results.

Thank you, Lucian for breaking down the frightening truths that Gellman speaks of. Rachel had him on her show tonight and I was literally left shaking.

Or maybe it hasn't, and the Orange Turd has brought to the fore all that it is to be an American. Loud, ignorant, and stupid. Not to mention morbidly obese.

When I saw the news about devin tonight, I could not stop laughing! I have not given that twit a second thought for the longest. They deserve each other. The next “Micheal Cohen”. You can’t always get what you want but sometimes you get what you deserve.

a funny little postscript to this story is that around ten days ago, I got a robocall identified as "Nunes," and immediately dismissed the thought that the "Nunes" calling could possibly be the one in question. I ordinarily won't answer unsolicited calls, but was a tad curious, so I answered. I had been wrong...it was indeed Devin, looking for contributions. now, simply reading one or two of my posts here will understand that I have a dirty enough mouth on paper (or whatever this digital medium actually is). but is as nothing compared with any five minutes I'm awake. riled, I can get really, really ugly. and I was (it was probably a recording, but when I enumerated the various relatives with whom I thought it was important for that guy on the probable recording to penetrate, it went to "we'll take you off of our contacts." I assume that the motherfucker's plans were well known back then, and can only conclude that a decision was made to scam with a grosser net than usual. and I bet they raised a lot of money on that one stupid lie.

Yes, lies are very profitable for people with no moral compass.

I apologize for not pointing out that the demographic of which I spoke represents only a minority of the American people, unfortunately they seem to be in the driver's seat right now.

Does that mean that "patriots " can drive their cars through a crowd of white-trash rioters in Washington DC?

"The International Center for Not-for-Profit Law’s U.S. Protest Law Tracker has counted 17 states that have passed at least 30 anti-protest laws that have expanded the definition of “riot” and increased penalties for violating new anti-riot laws. Sixty-eight other bills are pending that would limit dissent and/or make various forms of protests illegal."

So, there goes the First Amendment. Right? What's next? With five on the Stench Bench already in favor of "states rights" superseding any federal law, shall we just disassemble this entire nation into 50 warring tribes? Putin and China must be having a field day right now.

yes.

trump and the gops are currently setting things in place to seize a win no matter which way the 2024 vote turns out. and your posting, LKTIV, well describes how they could do so violently and with well thought out planning.

I had just read The Atlantic article before opening your posting (didn't hit a paywall - just clicked a link in a tweet). it is a very long but well spelled out article on how the gops are setting up the next coup with much more forethought and planning than trump's attempt. it gave me the chills to read and realize how close we came then to seeing trump extend his hold on the presidency. Gellam (sp?) describes the various ploys that trump and his henchmen/women tried to postpone the Electoral Count to buy time to twist arms and to change Electors to ones favorable to trump. so close.

Shades of Nuremberg laws, just replace Jew with Liberal, not quite as blatant yet, but they are definitely working toward a goal.
