He sucker-punched those suckers. Afterwards, MTG returned her coat to George Santos.

That is truly funny!😂

Cruella DeMTG would never return anyone's coat or anything else, I bet.

That was a political master class taught live in front of millions by President Biden. As an old guy, I know ageism is one of the last "isms" that's still (mostly) acceptable in public discourse, but he showed that age and treachery still beats youth and exuberance. Let's go Brandon, indeed!

Expand full comment

In this case it was age and skill besting (relative) youth and treachery. As to ageism -- yes indeed. Over the decades it's come down most heavily on women, who are seen to be washed up when their looks no longer appeal to men while men get a pass for their money and their power. But listening to some people's comments about why President Biden shouldn't run for re-election, I think men may be catching up as targets.

Expand full comment

I kind of thought the same thing - treachery is part of the GOP brand at this point. Decided to go with the original saying, as Biden proved he can still outmaneuver his adversaries. And as for his age, they don't have much else for which to attack him.

It was beautiful masterful and terrifying (for Republicans) at the same time!

Expand full comment

It should have been terrifying for them, but it remains to be seen (by me, anyway) if they will realize it in time.

Should we tell them? Let’s not, and say we did. 👍🏻😉

What a sorry spectacle for the GQP. Their mascot, a baboon named MTG, stepped right into her own rancid feces. Only to be bested later by Sarah Huckleberry Sanders incoherent doom scape ramblings. I wonder what Ben Franklin would say if he were around to see these clowns.

Expand full comment

Interestingly, I think he'd be neither surprised nor without hope.

Hey...even baboons have more dignity and better fashion sense than Empty Greene. Her constituents probably ate it up, but the rest of the (sane) U.S. should be heartily embarrassed by this display of ridiculously bad manners.

Good people can disagree on goals and policy but last night’s SOTU speech and Sara Huckabee Sanders “rebuttal” laid bare the stark difference between the two parties and their views of what America should be. To say the GOP has now totally accepted and doubled down on Trump’s dystopian American carnage is an understatement.

Marjorie Taylor Green last night gave her best imitation of Main Street hooker plying her wares and screaming ugly bile and Sara Sanders immediately followed up with a speech clearly written

By Steven Miller.

Last night Joe Biden gave a speech trying to unite our nation. The GOP put on a horror show. The more they continue that path the sooner the majority of Americans will reject where they want to take us.

Expand full comment

My take away from the Governor's rebuttal was, "Me me me me, Biden is a liar, me me me, Biden is wrecking the economy, me me, woke woke something something me me me. And let me be clear, me."

I'd managed to forget what a dreadful person she is. Ugh.

in which case she did us a favor by reminding us. so it's medicine, but very, very bitter.

And me without a spoonful of sugar.

IKR? And I thought I'd never again be exposed to her ghastly wretchedness. I mean, I had completely forgotten about her. Probably deliberately for my mental health.

Expand full comment

I had forgotten what a miserable wretch she is. After about 10 minutes, I couldn’t take any more and turned her off. 🤢

Expand full comment

You lasted longer than me...I saw her nasty face again which gave me PTSD, so I turned her right off!

Expand full comment

Same here. I lasted two minutes then thought "I've got better things to do."

I made it 10 seconds.

Well, I had decided to ignore Huckabee's rebuttal, but now I think I will watch it for the laughs.

Expand full comment

Other than money or great sex, there is nothing on earth that could induce me to watch more than 5 seconds of Sarah Huckster.

"great sex" and "Sarah Huckster" in the same sentence is kinda gagworthy.

It's horrible. You'll love it.

Andrea, maybe preface it with an antacid. ijs 😉

I watched about two minutes, and that was too much

Best SOTU I’ve ever seen. I hope Biden’s approval rating rises. I’ve never understood why it’s been so low.

Expand full comment

It's been so low, because Biden has the temerity to be old.

Expand full comment

Yes, he does. And still, he rides a bicycle. So undignified! He was even filmed once when he tripped and fell off. He got back on and rode off. Such a show off!

His predecessor sensibly rides a golf cart and avoids memorial ceremonies with foreign leaders, knowing how his hair would be affected by the rain.

HA! Good rebuttal, Carol!

I attribute it mostly to the mainstream media. They continually criticize Biden and Democrats in general for their shortcomings (or for not achieving the impossible with this divided Congress) while treating Trump as entertainment. From the beginning of the 45 administration, too many journalists have given the Republicans one pass after another because if they told it how it was, they would be accused of bias.

The reason much of the press has a "liberal bias" is that for the last several decades the so-called conservatives have been getting more and more anti-democratic, small-minded, and destructive. Republicans are continually trashing the "free press," so journalists who don't call them out are in effect cutting their own throats -- but they're so devoted to bothsidesism that they do it anyway.

Expand full comment

Damn! Was that a speech for the books, or what? Not bad for a "senile old man" who bested the entire Republican caucus in the House....played them like a Stradivarius, he did.....huzzah I say.

Expand full comment

And President Biden did that mostly off the cuff. The trap was laid in his written speech, but Biden sprung it and tightened the rope with his unscripted remarks.

Expand full comment

That was a masterfully laid trap. The run mouth -no brain activity wing of the GOP (Grievance Obstructionism Prevarication) jumped right in.

Expand full comment

Yes, a masterful trap indeed! The Repubs played Wiley Coyote to Biden's Roadrunner.

Perfect! 😂

It was beautiful to watch: a real and compassionate statesman, with experience, pluck, and patriotism--against an incoherent, ugly, and compromised "opposition" epitomized by the likes of Gaetz, Boebert, Jordan, Scott, Santos/Devolder/whatever, and McCarthy. One for the history books.

Biden’s pushback a la the British House of Commons is a great strategy. The MAGA crowd has had an open field to run with their lies for too long. Put in some more players and get back to blocking and tackling.

We were treated to the sight of a master in action. I, too, wondered if it were C-span or BBC1! How low will we continue to go? Joe Wilson yelling “liar” at Obama and Sam Alito shaking his head, were only the opening act. The exchange between George Santos and Mitt Romney was pleasing however!

when I saw them talking, I thought Mitt was a worm. then, later, I found out what he said and I changed my mind.

What I saw last night was that Joe Biden has wisdom. I saw a man who understands the country better than anyone. He's going to run, and he's going to win.

Expand full comment

And the Republicans even recently had been calling to raise the age requirements for Social Security...Sanders counter-response was more projection -- Biden has not been captured by the far left but the alt right are controlling the Republicans... more of appealing to the base by calling Joe crazy....nothing of substance....my wife thought she made it largely about herself. BTW, I'd rather be woke than asleep.

Expand full comment

All about herself, indeed. Remember who she worked for.

Expand full comment

Hear hear! Just for shits and giggles, I fact checked Biden’s speech and compared similar fact checks to Trump’s SOTUs. Need I tell you what you will see?? The great majority of Biden’s statements were true in spite of Marjorie Taylor Greene’s “liar” screams. A couple were mostly true or need to be put into context. Trump, on the other hand? Wow!

It was a great speech and brought tears to my eyes. The Republicans come off as outright fools

On prime-time live tv, no less. Good job, President Joe!!!

It's been a puzzle for me that people, certainly the media, keep underestimating JB. He defies the constant drumbeat about his age even while on occasion showing signs of it. He's drama free, which makes him boring to those condtioned to want and expect it. He signals his empathy, compassion, and humanity at every turn, and we should be kissing the ground he walks on. Like many others I wish he were younger, but given his performance last night I have no problem supporting him for another term. Let's hope *Rump gets the nomination.
