I worked in a free clinic in 1971 in Michigan, counseling women who needed abortions, giving them the phone number in New York, connecting them to private donors who would cover their costs, so they wouldn't die in a botched attempt. To think 50 years later we are right back in that cave is terrifying. Is it no coincidence that Texas essentially ended any gun control at the same time this happened and at the same time white supremist groups are holding up the Taliban as their model for insurrection? This isn't just about women. It's about killing democracy.

Unfortunately, it affects only women; the day fathers suffer the consequences of this debate will be the day that change happens.

Excellent essay. Texas republicans are loathsome bigots. I hope they have plans to care for all the children that will be born. I hope the liberals on SCOTUS are spending time shrieking at Roberts. I hope the people who said Kavanaugh and Amy would honor settled law have shit on their shoes for the rest in of their lives. I hope all young women who have unwanted pregnancies find safe and legal help. I guess my right to have my own credit card will be the next to fall.

I understand Roberts voted with the liberal side.

Yeah, though he didn't join Justice Sotomayor's dissent, as Kagan and Breyer did. I'm guessing that he was voting against the refusal of injunctive relief as much as anything, as anyone of any persuasion with any respect for process should have done. Are we ready to get serious about court reform yet??

Roberts has his legacy to consider; history will not be kind to Trumpanzees.

This is one of the most depraved and diabolically evil laws I’ve seen in my lifetime. If only the Democrats had a majority and could stop this nonsense. Oh wait 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'd like to share yesterday's completely irony-free headline from the Lubbock (Texas) Avalanche Journal: "666 New Texas Laws Go Into Effect Sept. 1. Some Might Affect You." 666??!!! Couldn't have been more appropriate.

I saw someone refer to the Texas Republican Party as the Texas Taliban, today. Can't say they are off the mark, either.

Why won't lawmakers tie the father of the unborn to the legal ramifications imposed upon women? The father then would have to share the burden of the $10,000 award to the person who would file such a claim. If the father had to fork over $10,000, damn straight, the law would die an early death.

The Handmaids Tale has come to life in Texas as it is becoming "Gilead" and its Republican male legislators are emulating the "Commanders" of Gilead.

A template for other red state legislatures. Women's health be damned.

Great article. Sad day for Texans. In a state where everything’s big, logic and common sense are buried deep in the heart of a place where the sun don’t shine.

My husband is a perinatologist—complicated pregnancies. Loons like Abbot don’t care if a woman’s life is at risk. They don’t. I’ve asked. Abortion has been a red-herring issue the GOP waves about to rile self-righteous indignation. It garners votes. So where are the Texas women, I ask? I can think of two—my sisters-in-law, and their daughters who believe they are good just because they attend church. We are talking about a mentality that lives with their heads up their asses (Head Up Ass syndrome aka HUA), unwilling to consider a world that lies outside their teeny tiny experience.

Sounds like Texas will become a vast network of spies each trying to get the $10,000 reward if they are able to successfully sue. So theoretically a half dozen or so people could be sued including family members, even an Uber driver if he drives her to the location where the abortion takes place 6 weeks and one day into the pregnancy. So will expert witnesses be called to testify how far along the pregnancy has progressed? Will the poor woman and her "accomplices"or partners in crime be saddled with thousands of dollars in legal fees? So much for the Land of the free. I see The Atlantic has an article on this too. "So will expert witnesses be called to testify how far along the pregnancy has progressed?" Who defines "expert witnesses"? And who defines onset of pregnancy? Home pregnancy tests are unreliable in many ways. Especially in the early onset of possible pregnancy. Spread your legs, lady, pee in this cup. We have a few "expert witnesses" who want to expound on the time-line viability of your pregnancy. HORRORS! Do the research! Know the dynamics of pregnancy time-lines. Men have so much to learn about the realities and timelines of pregnancy.

Ever since Ann Richards was voted out of office as Governor, Texas has slid year by year to where it is today. After she was defeated by Bush 2, it's been downhill ever since. Then Rick Perry and now Abbott. Perhaps Beta O'Rourke or Julian Castro can save that state from it's own demise.
