I'm in Florida. A local shitty riverfront restaurant ( https://www.fox35orlando.com/news/florida-restaurant-group-stops-selling-bud-light-over-brands-partnership-with-trans-influencer ) just made a big deal about smashing cases of Bud Light and threatening to stop serving Budweiser products, business savant that he is in this tourist town.

I hate Bub Light as a beverage, but I've taken to buying one in the bottle at any bar or restaurant I go to just to display it and bait the morons. Plus if I see someone drinking a Bud Light, I buy them another. I might even get some Bud Light bumper stickers for my truck.

These daze you get your fun where you can and I can't think of anything more funny than having a discussion with any asshole that might feel a need to make a comment about my choice of beverage. Maybe it's time all us Wokesters came out of the closet. :)

I like how you think; I missed the significance of the "war on Bud Lite" and had to play catch up with my current cultural events. I did so by purchasing my first Bud Lite in 20 years, and "reviewing" it on my beer ap. I indicated it was more of a statement than a rating. I also marked myself "safe" (per the Facebook trend) from having my feelings hurt by a beer can.

And I don’t even drink beer. 😂

Yeah, I took note of that ridiculous display of ignorance and although I've never been to his restaurants, I had seen the one in Melbourne. Good to know, I can boycott too!!

Bud Light (and all Bud beers) are wretched pisswater. But I think I'll do what you do to say gay and trans loudly and proudly. Fuck the haters

That's the sort of sacrifices we need to make at times like these, but at least there's no requirement to drink the swill. :)

It's a full speed race to the bottom of the barrel to scrape up votes. The "rage addiction" requires constant feeding. How long before they start requiring LGBTQIA arm patches?

I would not.

Don't do that.

I'm wondering how much longer till they start labelling "pro-LGBTQIA" or "pro-choice" businesses so the Floriduh Taliban knows where not to shop. Voting them out may not be possible the way they are rigging and gaming the system in their favor.

I don’t think people have stopped going to DisneyWorld because of DaSatan’s fight with Disney.

Agreed! But they probably aren't DeSatan (😂) supporters to begin with.

He is so terrifying. The one positive thing is, though, I believe that every time he issues another one of his ridiculous edicts, he moves further away from any possibility of being the nominee... and if I may add a snarky comment, 'me thinks he doth protest too much...'!

I read today that there is a visible from space pile of seaweed blobs heading to Florida, and when they get there, they're going to collect on the beaches and stink.

Here's the link for that story: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/04/19/climate/seaweed-florida-sargassum.html

I mean, not stink a little-huge honking piles of stinking, poisonous seaweed that will drive tourists away and people will complain about how nobody is doing anything about them.

As I commented, "I wouldn't want to live there-it's gonna stink so bad"-but DeSantis can't pass laws to make them go away, and they're not going to be able to shoot them either.

It'll be the first real crisis since Covid that he'll be required to actually do something concrete for the state of Florida and I don't think he's going to like it much.

it won't be about gays, abortion, or gender things.

It'll make him cry.

I can't post a picture directly, but this one describes him and every single Republican in existence.

I'll go out on a limb and pronounce DeSmarmy's presidential possibilities dead. But what he's done to education and libraries will live on to follow him around. He doubled down on his anti-woke stuff and just looked antediluvian. (By me, the opposite of "woke" is "asleep." That word was a poor choice on the deplorables' part, I believe.) But may

this extreme right wing circle jerk continue until they sober up, and may any of them who fall ill take hydroxycloroquin - or however you spell that veterinary medicine that is racking up fatalities among the crackpots. "Don't say gay," indeed.

The most hypocritical thing about DeSatan is he was Drumpf's first priority for the COVID vaccines and proudly touted FL as a state that had such widespread vaccine availability! My goodness people were waiting for hours in line at arenas, convention centers...where I live it was at a fairground with cars lined up for miles. He never wanted mask mandates or shutdowns of course

The students in Florida know what DeSantis is doing to their futures.....college students are angry and scared that their degrees will be worth nothing because so many subjects will be missing from their college credits, and they know they will be competing for jobs with students from sane states that don't cripple their college students.

Desatan is a moron of the first order, he actually makes the insipid clown look positively bright, I’m enjoying watching them chew on each other, it keeps them occupied and sucks money from more harmful pursuits, have at it boys! 👏🏻👍😎

He is truly a scary man but let us not forget for a minute he is not doing this to lose votes. As hard as it is to accept all of what DeSantis is doing in Florida is to cater to people with whom his lunacy

Resonates loud and clear.

What we must accept the reality a large and growing segment of our citizen agree with him and his anti science, anti democratic actions and mandates. I believe what we are seeking happen right before our eyes is the conversion of the once staunch conservative belief in minimal government intrusion to what is nothing less than new age Fascism where a portion of our population is more than willing to go along with a loss of liberties for those whom they disagree with or simply cannot relate to because of cultural separation.

Hitler identified the Jew and other “deviants” as being scapegoats for persecution. DeSantis has identified others but they serve the same purpose.

We need to be vert clear eyed here. Ron DeSantis’s war on gays, teachers, books and businesses who would dare to challenge his anti democratic ideas has already enlisted a large army of fellow travelers for his crusade. We need to be concerned about them as much as Ron DeSantis.

Ronnie's "anti-wokeness" may fly in Floriduh, but I doubt little Ron's efforts to win the RepubliCON primary is going to #1: yield success...#2: sell--or fly--anywhere else. He is the most charmless specimen of over-ambitious fascism I have yet seen. Drumpf seems almost likeable when compared to little Ronnie and I absolutely loathe Drumpf.

TL, I wish /hope your analysis is true but I am of the opinion a way too large swath of RedStare America is 100% in agreement with him. Trump ascendancy in so short a time proved there is a significant segment of our electorate which has bought into the grievance filled narrativee which DeSantis is now mining.

Expand full comment

DeSantis just doesn't have the talent or gift for connecting with those MAGAs by sharing or inventing the grievance narratives that Trump uses so successfully. Even his FL legislators would prefer to endorse Trump rather than DeSantis. I might be surprised and/or disappointed later on, but I just do not see DeSantis winning the primary against Trump, should Trump run (and it looks as though he will).

But the R Primary is more than a year away and who knows what can happen in a year?

From the very first time I heard and saw DeSantis, just a few years ago, I have thought of him as a very effeminate man.

Yet his attacks on gays are relentless and vicious. He is one very strange something.

Gay men who hate themselves are frequently virulent homophobes. Roy Cohn, and J. Edgar Hoover are prime examples.

Expand full comment

it's one of the oldest sociological/political phenomena in history: gay people (ordinarily men) in power, who are tortured by the nature of their own feelings, are the most active crusaders against normalizing those feelings and actions. yes, it's self-hate; it's also what obviously feels like a great cover. except, of course, that it's become such a well-known "trope" that it no longer provides especially great cover. did DeSantis somehow fail to get the memo?

and in any list of self-hating gays in the era you're citing, you shouldn't leave out McCarthy himself, as well as Roy Cohn's occasional sexual partner, Cardinal Spellman.

Expand full comment

You’re certainly correct about McCarthy and Spellman. I knew about them both. However, I didn’t think Spellman was Cohn’s type.

What you say is interesting. I did not make the leap you did, but his voice is not authoritative.

Read up on J Edgar Hoover, the former FBI director who famously bashed gays while being closeted himself.

So, Rich, do you think that DeSatan, like Pence, is a deeply-closeted man fearful of his homoerotic or feminine urges – which don't make you gay, per se – that are found in most everyone? And seeks to blot it out in the world in the delusion that doing so will erase it in himself? Good look with that one, Ronnie.

I don't think that DeSantis truly believes in anything other than advancing himself in the world. He is a complete phony; everything about him is fake; he is another amoral beast like Trump.

There's a level of denial of reality in Florida that is truly alarming. He is trying to drag the state back into the 19th century.

Boot boy will run Florida into the ground until the citizens vote him out, throw him out, or leave. All the right wing red states employ policies that hurt their citizens. Eventually, the citizens will realize they are useful idiots, and their power hungry politicians could care less if they live or die. Because they will. Then, those citizens will vote them out, throw them out, or leave.

I don't see boot boy winning any nomination, If he wins, he loses anyway. I don't see America voting for a nazi.

Read the fine print.

America has a long-standing infatuation with Nazism, exemplified by Charles Lindbergh, the aviator who actively supported Hitler.

Expand full comment

I'm finding it pretty heartening that in the last few years, the English have managed to come to terms with the Nazi proclivities of the Royal Family, especially that dumb prick who abdicated and was replaced by stuttering Colin Firth. I jest, but only because I can't remember which George it was (5th, right?), who also didn't have a lot of problems with Hitler (but didn't have much choice when the country was being bombed). the latest volume in the huge multi-volume history of the "Windsors" is focused precisely on this issue, but I don't find the family a very compelling subject (I couldn't watch "The Crown" for more than about seven minutes, and it features many of my favorite actors).

Lindbergh was a contemptible piece of shit every day he lived, but at least he changed his tune after Pearl Harbor.

DeSantis obviously never learned much history and doesn't know how well prohibition worked out. in the first page or two of his last (wonderful and genuinely funny) novel, "The Reivers," Faulkner says that there is pretty much nothing wicked or perverted (I paraphrase out of laziness) that hasn't entered the mind of a ten or eleven-year-old boy. when I was about twelve, I saw my first "French deck," along with every other kid on the block. I don't think Floridians have ever been very different.

and that was in the Analogue Era. I've worked in public schools with every grade, and by fifth grade a whole bunch of kids have already viewed dirty movies. I'm not saying this is a good thing, either. but it IS where things are at these days.

I believe that most of us in the demographic middle are starved for political leadership. And De Santis is peddling the polar opposite to leadership by trying to out-Trump Donald Trump. De Santis is fighting an uphill battle for a diminishing number of Trump voters, largely because De Santis is himself outside the cultural circle of Trump voters. All this stuff about gender identity is nothing they truly care about. It's as if De Santis declared war on space aliens. Most Trump voters couldn't describe what De Santis is hyperventilating about.

Expand full comment

DeSantis wants to out-Trump the Don and, unfortunately for poor Ron, he hasn't the personality or that special gift of connection that Trump seems to be able to make with his MAGA fans.

He (DeSantis) doesn't venture outside of Florida much because he might have to face actual questions from real journalists who haven't been filtered, vetted or coached by his staff. Such encounters in recent months have sent him scuttling back to the safety of Tallahassee and his sycophantic legislators. Imagine poor Ron on a nationwide campaign tour having to control his short fuse for hours at a time and to pretend a geniality he doesn't possess for that same amount of time. All the while having to fend off in-his-face questions about EVERYTHING he has done... Nope I can't even begin to imagine the melt-downs.
