I retired in 2018. I worked my ass off in food service for over 50 years and was looking forward to all the things I was going to do with the rest of my life. But we got trump magas right wing christo-fascists attempted overthrow of democracy. Covid-19 lockdowns. Climate change disasters too numerous to count. Mass shootings of children and innocent people. Fucking nazis! And now what could blow up into WW 3. I could go on. I guess I should be thankful I made it through so far. But this shit is getting old. I just wanted to be content to spend time with my family and enjoy the fruits of my labor. 21st. century technologies in the hands of savages. Mankind hasn't changed in 10,000 years. Okay thanks for letting me rant. It's been a tough day for all of us. If we are lucky tomorrow will be another day. Peace & Love.
I planned to retire just when the country elected an authoritarian maniac to the presidency. I immediately knew, having grown up right next to Queens, that we were screwed and my retirement was going to be anything but peaceful. I complain, and then I see what the rest of the world is going through, and I try not to complain.
Anyone looking back over human civilization and hoping for the world to get along is fooling themselves. Humans, on the whole, are just not a nice species. Still, I remain optimistic. I guess I'm one of those fools.
You can always count on Mr. T. to check in when something momentous happens -- and it's often, like going into labor, at night. To have been to Israel adds a dimension, for him, and for some of the rest of us.
"It’s no mistake, Cohen implied, that Hamas chose this moment to launch its attack on Israel."
That occurred to me, as well, and it would be ironic, to say the least, if Bibi and his troubles were the impetus for hitting Israel now, because he lost his brother in 1973 at Entebbe. Because of the commotion in this country, it would be a good time for our enemies to hit us.
Because requests for funds originate in the House -- and there is no Speaker at this moment -- there may be procedural problems freeing up money. Also, the NATO countries are making noises that Putin seems to be inching towards them. This would involve us in *two* wars. (Maybe now Tubby the Tuba can be pushed to release the holds he has on 300 top military promotions?) In any case, just thank the deity of your choice that the loudmouth-nutjob-wildman potus is no longer in the White House.
Goober isn’t moving, he said. I’d like to throw him over a cliff and he can take Rand Paul with him! See, this is what happens when we let crazies onto our sacred grounds.
I did not know about Bibi’s brother but that certainly doesn’t give him or the Likud Party any excuse for their hard right ways. They have caused innumerable problems for Palestinians and Israelis also. He is Israel’s Trump.
I’m hoping The dipshits in Congress understand now that this isn’t an Entertainment Tonight Show and take their job seriously or Get Out! Can someone serious grab the wheel before we hit the wall?
I have more questions than answers but why haven’t they been indicted for their involvement with J6? The slow roll of Justice isn’t keeping pace with their destruction of Democracy.
Can fabricate a rocket and its launcher stand in a basement. It's the missile componentry that likely comes from inside Egypt through an elaborate tunnel system. Like most things best hiding spot is in plain sight sprinkled very near innocuous objects whether indoors or out*.
MOSSAD in the West Bank pretty much knows who and what is going on. Not so in the Gaza strip.

Q. I can only point you to history, thousands of years of it, recording the deaths of millions and the destruction of city after city by war after war fought century after century in the cradle of civilization, the names of Nebuchadnezzar, Alexander, and Caesar echoing darkly along the bloody way. not to be a doomsayer, but ive got a bad feeling about this.
with the level of deaths and destruction israel is suffering, they will not hold back until they wipe out the ability of their enemy(s) to conduct any such future attack.
there has been talk of israel razing gaza to the ground. and who knows what/how they will handle the situation of the captives hamas holds.
further, i read that israel is being attacked from the north, from lebanon or syria, and possibly from the hezbollah in the west bank.
this is all so worrisome because of the fear of an expanding war theater.
and that is not including the talk of preemptive tactical nuclear strikes.
now, with the arrival of an american carrier group, what is the likelihood of an enemy sea drone attack on a ship? is the us navy prepared?
-Carrier group comes with additional SIGNIT capabilities to add capabilities to Israel's. Also is an insurance policy-deterrence so nation states don't jump in from the air or sea. Comes with risk, no doubt about it. Carrier group is at low risk of sea drone attack due to how far it will be stationed off the coast. It will also broadcast its warning not to enter an area around it or else be considered an attack.
-Accidents, whether a USS Liberty sequel or a shoot down of a civilian aircraft or the sinking of a civilian vessel are always a possibility. And the longer the group stays the tension and stress on the crew increases. Good commanders know rest is critical to mitigating stress. Bad commanders add to stress levels.
-Don't find nukes to be inside the realm of probabilities. Some sort of dirty bomb is more Hollywood fiction or Clancy imagination than reality. Both start w/some scientists putting on the finishing touches w/o every going thru any test regime. Would be nice if they at least finished the scene with the scientists saying bon chance mothafucka, and give us a 30 minute head start before you move it.
-Conflagration is always possible in the region. The confluences of treachery, hatred, and love of killing, death and religions are the perfect storm. The taking of xx-xxx hostages to include civs, police and mil actually reduces the risk of a widening theatre and does restrain Israel to some degree. Wasn't surprised Bibi first major move being to lay siege. Buys him time and saves a wee bit of face for this happening on his watch. More probable is the same old-same old Interlocutors from around the Arab world step in before chit hits the fan.
-Hamas does have a small presence in southern Lebanon and kept on a short leash by Hezbollah. See this more about local/regional support for Gaza and indirectly the West Bank than all-out war against Israel. And that includes a gamble Israeli citizens will force Bibi and his far-right government out for this horrific event being on their watch.
-Razing Gaza would be a fatal mistake not only for the state of Israel but also be a cause of backlash against Jews around the Blue Marble. Even Bibi ain't that stoopid plus he is risk adverse. Like most right wingers, he is a snake belly. Snake bellies don't grow spines. They slither around while their forked tongue never stops showing itself.
-Hostages alter the equation and severely limit the options. It is one thing to sacrifice captured mil personnel and LEOs, quite another to knowingly kill your own civs. Would be political suicide and have a long-term negative affect on the state of Israel including risking US aid. Unless Hamas is really dumb, those hostages serve a purpose when breathing. THey will protect them as if they were part of the leadership structure. And would venture some are with Hamas leadership by now. Do suspect Hamas may dangle a few to draw in IDF commandos into a trap.
So, please rest easier. You do have reason to harbor a bad feeling. Hopefully it will dissipate.
Thank you for this detailed assessment of present circumstances and strategies. What you wrote makes logical sense to me and, surprisingly, is more reassuring than not. I'll cling to the thought that hostages will serve to limit or forestall the destruction of Gaza that Netayahu is talking about.
Am very concerned with the "missing", specifically from the rave festival. (Is the reason I used unaccounted for and mentioned Hamas collecting IDs (saw handfuls in vids). Barbarians love trophies off the dead as well as robbing them.
Tells me the authorities can't ID many of the dead by the easiest method, on person ID. Not sure if the unidentified are in the official body count. Way too many unaccounted for considering 3plus days have passed. That would include foreign nationals. Israeli citizens serve in the mil so government will have their fingerprints.
Bibi's government has to allow family members to go to the morgues to remove some or all of the uncertainty. Has to be living hell for the families not knowing. Requires the suspension of all disbelief that there "missing" after nearly 4 days.
To answer your question, Julian, without being parochial, yes, it does sound v-e-r-y familiar. There: despot destroying democracy (with the aid of religious zealots), enemies swarm. Here: unintelligent wanna-be despot says he will destroy democracy if elected again with the aid of religious zealots and Russian agencies, ditto Chinese. Will external enemies swarm? (That's rhetorical and then some.)

The way some Israeli hawks are already blaming Iran for this assault reminds me uneasily about how quick American warhawks were to blame Iraq for the 9-11 attacks, without any evidence. Projection, much? Israeli hawks have been agitating for a "preventive" war on Iran for years. There has been a proxy, low-level war of assassination and terrorism from both sides before now. Will Israel truly attack Iran at last, and will this go as well as they think? That is one big question. Along with, will the USA back them?
Hezbollah holds a lot of big cards in this hand. How it plays them is anyone's guess at this point. But they are Hamas times ten, or more, when it comes to resources. If it engages in open war in the north of Israel, it would be Israel's nightmare, and the odds increase of American forces being drawn in. But then, attacks by Americans on Hezbollah would trigger even more retaliation, and that American carrier force could face thousands of missiles out of Lebanon.
None of this could end well at all, but really, none of this is surprising to me, apart from the intelligence failures to detect such a massive operation in the works. Usually Israel has been good at using surveillance and informants to snuff out threats before they launch attacks. This operation from Hamas had to be planned for a long time, but they kept the secret. But maybe all these years of being pounded by Israeli forces taught them some tricks (always a concern when you reduce people to desperation and compel them to evolve survival tactics) and maybe Israel should not have treated Gaza like a vast prison camp for years and negotiated with the Palestinians in good faith rather than render them stateless and hopeless and besieged.
There's a lot of truth in what you say. There's also a strong history of their coreligionists not doing much to alleviate their suffering beyond sending Wahabi and Iranian preachers of hate and ignorance into the region to further the suffering and hate, which they use as a PR ploy. The Saudi's in particular could effect a miraculous change on these people for what would amount to a rounding error on their budget.
Yes. I often note that the Palestinians and their plight are used as pawns by leaders and autocrats in the region, useful props, a "cause" to point to to keep the street stirred up and manipulated. If the Middle Eastern Muslim nations had made an effort beginning way back when, they could have worked to help the Palestinians in helpful, peaceful ways. But I think they found it useful for the problem to remain frozen in wretched stasis (abetted by unsympathetic Israelis), as a distraction from their own problems, and to keep that "Jewish menace" propaganda tool employed.
It's not good to be dispossessed. But historically, it has happened. Look at the aftermath of WWII in Europe, millions of refugees were driven from their homes as borders were shifted and whole populations evicted. It was an awful crime and added to the horrors of that conflict, this brutal aftermath. But with European and American efforts, survivors *were* resettled and new lives were built. And within years, less than a generation, there were no refugee camps in Europe. Why were the Palestinians abandoned to their fate? Because nobody with the power to do something helpful cared enough to try. No neighboring nation wanted to take them in. And Israel was unwilling to either grant them equal citizenship within its borders or tolerate a "hostile" state at its doorstep. It has been left to relief agencies and volunteers and patchwork groups to put band-aids on the problem.
The Bush Administration did not assume Iraq was responsible for 9-11. They knew all along they were not. They knew Saudi Arabia was responsible, but oil and gas.... They knew they were sending thousands of innocent Americans to slaughter innocent Iraqis using Billions of taxpayer dollars to do it. And they still walk free, It’s astounding the bloody muck we sweep under our own rugs.
While there are very real reasons to consider Iran behind this, but of course evidence should always be present before public accusations.
What the Palestinians are waging right now is terrorism on a large scale. It isn’t war. When they’re dragging murdered children burning through the streets it isn’t war it’s terrorism. I am just heartbroken. My Facebook feed is full of photos of killed young beautiful Israelis. 250 concert goers were slaughtered. I’ve even read morons who are claiming that Bibi did this deliberately in some sick plot. This is how people in this country think today. Reality has gotten completely blurred.
But I think this is a real warning for America that is getting lost. This happened because an autocratic leader, who wanted to hold onto power so he could avoid prosecution for his many crimes weakened his country. Sound familiar? The Israeli people were divided intelligence failed spectacularly. As long as Donnie boy walks free while he’s blabbering about nuclear secrets and trying to create dissension and hate we are vulnerable and we have a lot of enemies. Have we learned nothing from 9/11?
Rather than speculate waving a “magic twanger” of historical import, better to remain mute.

Except now we can have nuclear war.
True. Primarily due to far too many dick measuring dudes with the nuclear codes in the same pocket as their change.

“Making war is what so-called civilized people do, and it never ends.” -- this is the saddest truth of all about war.
It suggests an inability to learn, doesn't it?
that’s humans in a nutshell
This essay has affected me profoundly. Contemplating the deaths that have soaked that ground over millennia.
So little hope that by some miracle this doesn’t blow up into a greater conflagration.
What’s the culpability of of the Putin / Trump / Netanyahu axis in creating the conditions in Palestine and with Iran that led to this?
