I'm a hardened 74-year-old political cynic and thought I would never succumb to sentiment again (having been burned too many times), but much to my amazement I found myself crying during this astounding convention. We can do this; in fact, we must do this. We must all vote as though our lives depend upon it, because they most assuredly do.
Oh, boy, I thought it was just me and I should just take my emotions to my kitty to display. I hope people who weren't going to vote watched some of this or watched Tim Walz on YouTube as I sent a friend to do today. Tony Dekoupil interviewed a bunch of people just out on the street and of course most of them are not interested. It's a sad thing that most people of voting age couldn't care less about anything to do with voting.
I think that is changing. Many young people are becoming interested now that there is someone they can relate to who is on the ballot. Spread the word!
I just spent the last few hours crying my eyes out. I can't even remember the last time I felt like this, except perhaps in the 1960s when I was young and still had hope. Now, maybe, we can all dare to hope again.
I repeat myself, but I canceled my subscription to The New York Times due to the faint but pervasive odor of neo-fascism that the paper emits daily. The DNC Convention has been a masterpiece of organization, timing, significance, and it has given us a joyful sense of hope.
And the after prime time bullshit from NYTomb and WAA PO Me, because the Dems ignore the rules, anyone watching would be be so caught up with enthusiasm that they would think nothing of waiting a half hour longer to see Biden, the Obamas and Walz. Standing ovations take up time. Did they miss that?
The MSM just does not GET IT. Period, even as Lucian points out about Bruni. Mea couple o' Culpas in order.
Linda, I both hope and believe you are wrong about those endorsements. But, as someone said above, there is the faint odor of Neo fascism about both of them lately…
Lucian, I want to thank you especially for two things in this post. 1) Focusing on all the work and the genius behind the scenes that has delivered a flawless convention, creative beyond all expectation, and with a star-studded cast that has been full of surprises for 3 nights running. It's one of the first things I thought of on night one... Soooo many people must have been working 24/7 to pull this together. 2) I appreciate very much you reading the NYT and other mainstream media that I just can no longer stomach. It's a loss, but I feel like many reporters do that deep fake thing that the Supreme Court has done... give me hope that they're mending their ways only to let me down again in a New York second. I look forward to your updates every day. Oops... a 3rd note of thanks. You are so right... we have tomorrow to worry about those cheating idiots. Let us all enjoy night 4, which will undoubtedly be another beautiful night of tears and cheers!
Please God our party gets ahead of the ball, realizes that the other side will stop at nothing, and do everything, to suppress and invalidate votes, both at the polls and mail in, and do whatever is necessary to defeat those things before they are enacted. And please God that our party remains totally and resolutely intact, does not argue, and remains focused on one common goal… defeating Trump. He is a cornered snake and will do absolutely anything to win. And, when he doesn’t win, will do absolutely anything to invalidate Harris. He is a cancer on our nation and needs to be battled with all we have at our disposal. Dog fight time. General Patton time. How’s that for an opinion? LOL
How's that for an opinion? It's one I can get behind and endorse 1000 percent!! No amount of hyperbole is too much when it comes to describing the evils lows to which that cornered snake is willing to go.
This convention has lifted the spirits of this old duster (nr 80, now) in ways I could never have imagined. What a contrast with the dreary, reactionary Trump convention - which was all about him - of course. We'll need to fight it out with MAGA right to the bitter end - and send them all to the dustbin of history - and maybe Dear Leader himself to prison....... Vote decency, vote democracy, vote Harris/Walz!
I don't think the poll numbers on trump are correct, I think his support is way lower than being reported. I work in Pennsylvania and the last election had Trump yard signs everywhere. Now there's one house that has two signs. Several houses that had them earlier this summer have removed them. I haven't seen one of the 4' x 8' signs at all.
Several weeks ago I drove from the east side of the state to the middle. All secondary roads as no highway went that route. Out of curiosity I started counting houses with trump paraphernalia vs houses without. I gave up after houses without got into hundreds and houses with hadn't gotten over 20.
Astonishing! I wonder whatJames Carville would say. I'm sure you know his definition of Pennsylvania back when—Philadelphia and Pittsburgh and everything else is Alabama. He long held that if Biden would exit the Dems stood a chance. I know he thinks Harris can pull it off but dunno how conditional that assessment is.
Lucian! [insert laughing emoji here] Frabjous three days and then some. I take issue with your "gushing" adjective for Bruni. He was merely calling it as he seen it. Remember your first in-person look at [fill in the name of the place: Grand Canyon, Grand Canal, even Grand Central Station]. How would or did you write about it? With restraint? Yes, the Moronic Orange Felon has said out loud what was supposed to be the silent stuff: there are MAGAtroids occupying vote-counting positions in, is it 19? states. As Marx, Groucho and Ingels, Marty, shudda have written, Workers of MAGA world, unite for Kamala. You have nothing to lose but your shame.
Bruni doesn't call it as he sees it, he calls it after everyone else has seen it. He's a joyless hack (he cracks a smile about as often as Trump) who duplicitously maneuvered himself onto his OpEd perch and pushed aside far more talented journalists (see: Regina Schrambling) for his own gain.
I have a close friend who has more than a few contacts in political circles. He believes that the race is going to break wide open for Harris/Walz after Labor Day driven by their positive forward looking vision and upbeat tone, and the fact that people are sick and tired of Trump's whining. Oh, and the fact that more Americans who see JD Vance, the more Americans hate JD Vance. I'm inclined to believe him, but also think we need to believe the Coach. 4th Quarter, down by 3, driving toward the goal line with the best team on the field. And we can sleep when we're dead.
As for the convention, they should have given a speaking slot to someone who is going to defend the Palestinians. Had Biden's opponent been anyone but Trump, I would have left the line blank over his support for Netanyahu.
I don't know what you want. It's not going to get any better. Voting is like taking the bus, you get off at the nearest stop and walk the rest of the way. You don't sit on the bench demanding the bus company change the route.
I agree - the organizers should have (still can!!) given a slot to Palestinian spokesperson as a true gesture of compassion to match the opportunity they gave to Rachel & John & their moving speech- I hope there’s a last minute change, or at least a comment from Kamala on the subject making some distance from Biden’s support for Netanyahu.
So it turned out that in her speech, Harris did follow comments Israel’s right to defend itself with what has happened in Gaza being devastating. Innocent lives lost in Gaza, desperate, hungry people fleeing for their lives over and over, and the need for Palestinians to realize their right to dignity, security, freedom and self-determination. Seems that’s a nod to the years of oppression in Gaza, and a position on the Palestinian future that Netanyahu, of course, does not share.
THEN, we all get to work!! I've been talking constantly about what's on the ballot this year with every one of my patients, everyone who comes through the clinic, and I've gotten 59 young women registered to vote. I will continue doing that from now on, even after the election. The joy and happiness I've witnessed at the DNC has made me more enthusiastic and eager to do more!
Together we can win this election. There are some really good, smart young people running for office and I look forward to good things to come for the country.
Thank you Lucien. Wonderful convention, full of hope and optimism. Uplifting. But it's still a cliffhanger until we get all three branches. It's possible!
To paraphrase Michelle Obama- you don't know how bad you were feeling until you feel better. Wow- this week has been extraordinary, joyful, brilliant, inspirational and dare I say it....I feel so much better now.
Fox unexpectedly scheduled a baseball game tonight. I guess they wanted to draw some viewers from the Democratic convention. Too bad Fox, the Astros made short work of shutting out the Orioles and there was plenty of time to watch Kamala give the acceptance speech. And she hit the only homer I saw tonight.

Oh, they get it. They just don't like it. They're in the tank for Trump, and I expect the NYT and the WaPo to openly endorse the orange pig.
Linda, I both hope and believe you are wrong about those endorsements. But, as someone said above, there is the faint odor of Neo fascism about both of them lately…

I had only a quick look at the R convention. The enormous TRUMP sculpture was really weird. Un-American weird.
Carol, can you say “graven image?”
More Nazi Normal!
Exactly.
I just keep thinking: I'd rather be us than them.
I don't think the poll numbers on trump are correct, I think his support is way lower than being reported. I work in Pennsylvania and the last election had Trump yard signs everywhere. Thank you for taking the drive and counting the signs! It's great news!

She won't undermine the President. It's not her style. She's already stated she is for an immediate cease-fire and a two-state solution.
A thought....what if President Harris stopped arms to Israel and sent them to Ukraine instead?

That is awesome, Celeste!
59!!! Congrats, Celeste—you're doing great!
Women will turn this election...not often the Women Haters are out in full display for all to vote down.
Thank you Lucien. Wonderful convention, full of hope and optimism. Uplifting. But it's still a cliffhanger until we get all three branches. It's possible!

Tom, did you HAVE to bring down this devoted and long suffering Orioles fan…?!?
It feels like the last scene of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington...finally!
Fourth down. One field goal behind. We got the ball. We have to dig in with all we have to get to the 35, Fake the FG and nail a cornerpass TD.
We can do this!
GO GO GO is what I say!
