Calling on his ‘troops’. Hopefully our children (and on) will look back in history class where this be rightly labeled a period of suicidal anti-democratic insanity. An object lesson on why every child needs a comprehensive education including logic and ethics.

I just added "Barking Yam" as the latest entry (on page 6). Thank you! (If anyone is interested I'd be happy to post them.)

My take—-At this point he is losing more followers than gaining. Only the hardcore followers will go there and that’s not enough to win. I’m predicting a Biden victory in November.

Expand full comment

Agreed. It would seem Trump's only road to victory now is his go-to "lying, cheating, and stealing" the '24 election. Here's hoping the Biden Administration is on top of that.

Expand full comment

I'm not at all sanguine. Democratic voters who are demoralized and stay home are a real problem for Biden this year. You know Drumpf's infernal legions are going to be out in force. It would have only taken a few tens of thousands of votes in key states in 2020 to have swung the Electoral College to Drumpf, no matter losing the popular vote by *seven million.* That's how screwed up this country is electorally. Another original sin perpetrated by the Founders.

Expand full comment

I suspect his followers are on the banks of the "OMG he's really serious about this" Rubicon, and some of them are ready to go back home. Most of them probably know nothing about Project 2025, but the Project 2025 people don't have the votes to get Trump elected. They need the MAGAs -- the GOP's id, if you will. So I'm guardedly optimistic, but not slacking off.

Expand full comment

From your lips…etc. etc. etc!

Expand full comment

I see three possibilities. 1) It's all bullshit and bluster and the MAGA horde does not want to find themselves taken as hostages. Let's be real, 99% of them are chickenshit bullies. 2) Win or lose they take to the streets, armed, to either overturn his loss or enact his retribution. If that happens, win or lose, Biden should invoke the Insurrection Act and deal with them as the terrorists that they are. 3) Isolated MAGAs commit acts of terrorism Timothy McVey style attacking federal facilities, media building, elected Democrats and well known progressives. Of the three, I think #3 is the most likely, and the most insidious.

Expand full comment

#3 definitely. Then it becomes more of a state-by-state enforcement issue, hopefully with help from the National Guard.

Expand full comment

In a way, we're already seeing those isolated attacks in continuous random and mass shootings whether specifically stated as politically linked or random acts of anger, they are part of the chaos and lawlessness he promotes that breaks us.

We were warned early in 2017 when Trump claimed in Charlottesville that there were “…some very fine people on both sides.” He was always off the rails with his rants, but now the rails have been obliterated by the only people who could have shut him up…the Republican Party. Buckle in, more to come. Ugh. Thanks, Lucian.

Yes, we must buckle in and hope that we won't need the airbags.

Thank you for putting Trump's military salute in context. Given his many despicable behaviors (including the salute - as you so eloquently described) and many statements in the past about people who were injured or died serving our country, I ask myself "What do currently serving soldiers and their commanding officers think about Trump NOW?"

Expand full comment

A frightening number of military members are pro-Trump. Mostly white males, I presume. Perhaps they are now a plurality, but not a majority?

Expand full comment

I wish Lucian who comes from a long and distinguished military family would explain to me why what you're writing is true. I read that Fox News is on 24/7 on bases. Is it brainwashing? Is it the appeal of a "strongman". Based on my very limited experience with people in the military and on police forces: I just don't understand how Trump can do and say so many despicable things about military service and have them support him. The same goes for our police forces. Why do they so often support Trump despite his praise of J6 attackers who brutalized police at the Capitol? Do I chalk it up to poor public school educations, no civics classes, watching too much TV as a child?

Expand full comment

"I read that Fox News is on 24/7 on bases."

I've heard that, too. I wonder on whose orders that has become so commonplace, and what can be done about it.

Expand full comment

I don't know either, but I suspect the all-volunteer military has something to do with it. The young(ish), white, working-class men who think they've been pushed aside by women, people of color, "coastal elites," et al. seem to be well represented in both the military and law enforcement. In the absence of a draft or any form of required national service, it's probably not hard to avoid people -- including white men -- from different backgrounds.

Expand full comment

It does seem like a paradox, like why poor people in red states still support policies that only benefit the rich. Maybe it goes back to childhood, you grow up in a certain environment, church, party whatever, and just never change that identity.

Expand full comment

I think you're at least partially correct, Judith. My take is that there are probably some enlisted personnel from deep red states who are easily influenced by the lies the Mango Menace spews and, thus, support him. I can't imagine there are many members of the officer ranks who are as easily swayed. I like to think that those enlisted & officer personnel who possess critical thinking skills would not support the Mango Menace under any circumstances.

I hope you're right, but let's not forget General Michael Flynn.

I read an interesting book recently called Preparing for War, by Brad Onishi, about the history of American Christian nationalism and the Republican party. It reinforced my view that Trump is not un-American, as we would like to say and believe, but as American as apple pie.

He is just the inevitable next step in a long thread that traces back to second reconstruction, white citizen councils and the KKK. The movement is fueled by Christian nationalism, a uniquely American perversion of Christianity, with a white, warrior Jesus who endorses violence, warfare, against the multicultural, secular state. The goal is to reassert white Christian men in what these people view as their proper, biblical, role at the top of the hierarchy over women and minorities, to consign gay people back to the shadows. The thread goes through a tacit alliance with Goldwater, Reagan and a not-so-tacit alliance with Trump. There is nothing odd about the evangelical alliance with Trump; his endorsement of political violence on behalf of the power of white Christian men is part of a so-called "religion" that goes back to the Confederacy.

Yes, there are more of us than they are of them. But much like the 9/11 terrorists, they are fueled by a sick religious fervor that will make them hard to contain. To answer the question, how far will they go? There is no limit. The civil war was never properly won, the Confederacy was never truly defeated, and America continues to pay the price, 150 years later.

"Stochastic terrorism refers to political or media figures publicly demonizing a person or group in such a way that it inspires supporters of the figures to commit a violent act against the target of the speech. Unlike incitement to terrorism, this is accomplished by using indirect, vague, or coded language that allows the instigator to plausibly disclaim responsibility for the resulting violence." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stochastic_terrorism

During the same speech in which he predicted a "bloodbath" he also bloviated that there would no more "free and fair" elections if he didn't win in 2024. He was of course projecting as to what will happen if he actually does "win". Project 2025 and his other minions will make sure of it.

*******

A Florida Proud Boys member was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Thursday for "assaulting a group of police officers with a deadly and dangerous weapon," the Department of Justice announced.

The big picture: Christopher Worrell, 52, of Naples, Florida, had become a fugitive after he was convicted on felony assault charges, per a DOJ statement.

Zoom in: In August 2023, just days before Worrell was set to receive his sentencing after being found guilty in May 2023, he "cut off his GPS ankle monitor in a Walmart parking lot," according to the Justice Department statement.

The DOJ said that his fleeing prompted a manhunt that ended after six weeks when he was arrested at his home in Naples.

"In addition to an unresponsive Worrell, the FBI also found night-vision goggles, a wallet with approximately $4,000 in cash, and a bag with new camping gear inside," per the DOJ statement.

"Worrell later admitted that he had faked an opioid overdose upon arrest as a 'delay tactic.'"

Zoom out: Worrell is the latest Proud Boys member sentenced to prison time after being found guilty on charges relating to the Jan. 6 riot.

Former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio has gotten the longest sentence to date in the Jan. 6 cases after he was sentenced to 22 years in prison for his role in the insurrection.

What's next: U.S. District Court Judge Royce Lamberth ordered that after his 120-month prison term, Worrell must undergo 36 months of supervised release, and he must pay $2,000 in restitution and $610 in special assessment.

Herr Drumpenfuhrer seems indisputably to be dumber than a hank of hair, but he may have absorbed some historical lessons:

The J6 prisoners are an exact parallel to the Blood Order of the Alter Kämpfer (German for "Old Fighter"; plural: Alte Kämpfer) — a term referring to the earliest members of the Nazi Party, those who joined it before the 1930 German federal election, with many belonging to the party as early as its first foundation in 1919–1923.

Those who joined the party after the electoral breakthrough of September 1930 were known to the Alte Kämpfer as Septemberlings, and those who joined the party after the assumption of power on 30 January 1933 were known as the Märzveilchen.

As the party's "Old Guard" and of proven dedication to the movement during its so-called "Period of Struggle" (Kampfzeit) in 1925–1933, they were distinguished from the flood of new members who joined in 1933 and later for opportunistic reasons. A number of special awards/insignia were instituted for that purpose:

— the Honour Chevron for the Old Guard, awarded to those who had joined the party or its affiliated organisations before 30 January 1933;

the Golden Party Badge, awarded to the first 100,000 members of the party;

the oldest members, those who had participated in the abortive 1923 Beer Hall Putsch, were further decorated with the Blood Order.

The Alte Kämpfer also enjoyed more tangible benefits of their status. Once the Nazis took power, they received preference in employment and promotion. Many were given prestigious jobs in the opera houses, government buildings and universities of the Third Reich. Many achieved high status, such as Christian Weber, a former bouncer who was made an SS general.

Nazi propaganda glorified them as a small handful of fighters against almost impossible odds.

Trump's rhetoric is due in part to NOT facing Federal trials that he can rail against as his primary campaign messaging. So, while many others take the position of Trump once again escaping accountability, they're forgetting he is now forced to actually campaign in his go-to loose canon style and equally, if not more important, deal with the NY trials and their fallout.

My criticism of the teevee legal community centers on their dismissal of the NY trials as not in the same league as the Federal trials. (EDIT: The federal trials do not risk Trump's freedom during this calendar year, prolly not the next. Does allow him to milk the grievance message which is central to his campaign and beyond). What a misread. In all 3 NY trials, Trump is facing the biggest hit on his reputation, on his character, and his finances. Found their take to be rooted in their experience in the Federal world as a blinder to the totality of the rest of the picture. So much so they continually raised expectations while ignoring how the Federal justice system functions in slow motion. Emphasis motion as in defense attorneys gumming it up with a series of motions.

-The E.G. Carroll verdicts reminded people the Access Hollywood tape was not locker room talk, including Melania. And Trump made it worse with his mouth and conduct before. during, and after the trial. While alone it is unlikely to sway his die-hard supporters, it was a blow that opened up more fissures in Trump World. None have been addressed nor repaired.

-The State of NY trial added, if not multiplied the damage. While I don't count out Trump finding a big money source or sources to avoid setting off the dismantling of Trump world piece by piece, the judgment revealed Trump to be a bigger liar about what means the most to him and his reputation, money.

-The NY-Manhattan trial is going to reveal the dirtbag side of Trump, again. While his supporters couldn't spell or define salacious their primary sources of information Murdoch and other right-wing outlets) will not be able to resist reporting on the salacious details that go with the 2wimmin , The National Enquirer, Trump, and the Trump Org. While the defense will try to make Michael Cohen out as the villain the real problem for the defense and Trump is witness stand testimony from Stormy Daniels. She will chew up and spit out any attorney who dares fuq with her.

There is no way Trump can use the Manhattan trial as a campaign stop unless he is suicidal. His further attacks on E.G. Carroll cost him each time he opens his trap, not only money but votes from wimmin. And unless Trump finds a Sugar Daddy in the next week or a NY Appeals Court cuts him slack the Trump Org's House Of Cards is coming down.

With an empty Federal trail calendar, Trump has no choice but to campaign on the stump rather than from Courthouse steps. Is far less expensive to campaign outside of court or from Mar-A-Lago/Bedminster than the money it takes to do so in a dozen or more states. The bitterness of the 3NY Trials is driving him to lash out in the most extreme and incendiary language that reminds people what a POChit he is.

And as a Bostonian my nod to New Yorkers for being the ones to stick it to him. Nothing beats the hometown putting it to someone who misused and abused the privilege of living and conducting business there. Justice comes in more forms than simply the legal system.
