Did you see Shitler "working" at a McDonald's today? Beyond pathetic! Even Bill Kristol said something about Biden's economy being so good that McDonald's was forced to hire a convicted felon who is out on bail.

It was all staged. The place was closed, he handed some pre cooked fries through the window but didn’t take any money. It was over in 15 minutes.

This will all be over in two weeks when Kamala and Waltz win. Well, we know there will be small fires to put out but we can do that. I just hope that we all survive the next two weeks.

I highly doubt this will be over after the election. MAGAs will remain. None of their disillusionment or

What needs to happen to him can’t be mentioned here, but I think you know what I’m talking about.

Yes but. This doesn't expand his base. It puts a lot of people off. Invoking the idea of "locker room talk" is just an excuse to act in an uncivilized, brutish manner. It doesn't excuse the unacceptable racism, misogyny, bigotry, and just plain selfishness of people who engage in it. Women are not going to like it at all, so all this nonsense about getting Nikki Haley to join him on the campaign trail for the next two weeks to court women is a lie. He's shooting himself in the foot.

Women gave Trump 43% of their vote in 2020. Why?

Expand full comment

Self-hate. Kowtowing to the men who dominate them or have brainwashed them. I can't understand why any woman votes for this sleezebag other than cynical opportunists or hypnotized cultists.

Expand full comment

Somewhere recently I saw a comment by someone who was doing early voting and said couples were being called up in pairs so the men were looking over their wife's shoulder when she voted. It just kills me that I can't remember where I saw that. Under those circumstances (illegal, I'd think... except states set their procedures) I could see women voting for him. Otherwise, when I see women at his rallies, I assume total lack of information.

Well said. Please keep saying that. As often as possible.

My fervent hope is that I live to see both houses of Congress with at least 51% elected women. Yes, there will be MTGs and Boeberts, but there will be many more Pelosis and Elizabeth Warrens. Men — white men— have fucked this country up for long enough.

Not all Trumpsters are poor and downtrodden; lots of middle class and wealthier professionals, solidly employed, with jobs, status, power are enthusiastic MAGAs. Perhaps at heart, regardless of age, many people still want to be the "bad boy". It's so much easier to rant at the kids who got A's or the supervisor at work than it is to actually study or do the job well. Trump is approving revenge and resentment - and cheating - as normal and beneficial. I fear it's going to take a generation or two to restore dignity, respect, and integrity into American culture.

Expand full comment

Yeah...but I think that Trump's appeal to the well-off middle class has a lot more to do with tax cuts than it does with permission to yell obscenities at the teacher everybody dislikes or to talk about vulgar references to outsize body parts around the water cooler at work.

Expand full comment

Yes, and those folks are too short-sighted or naive to see that his policies would seriously damage, if not wreck, our economy and greatly diminish their wealth. He is a kleptocrat; he and his family tried to steal his niece's inheritance, and I wouldn't be surprised if he tried to steal from his own kids. Not to mention stealing from the American government.

And attempting to steal the 2020 election--and it's a sure thing that he will try again this time.

But this time, he won't be a president, he'll just be a lowly citizen like the rest of us -( if that helps at all!)

Expand full comment

Yes very true and unless President Biden is a whole lot dumber than I think he is (he's not) he has a plan in place for any eventualities that Trump and his election stealing allies can come up with.

Expand full comment

Well, I think it's more on others' shoulders to deal with that. For instance, the courts that will expedite challenges and the laws that help protect the electoral vote certification which Mr. Hubbell went into, although the part about lowering the total electoral votes needed for a majority by half the number of the electoral votes from a state which can't turn theirs in isn't terribly satisfactory since we both know if there is a problem with certifying or producing electoral votes it will be in a legislatively red state producing a blue popular vote.

Yes and no. I hear people lauding the tax cuts but if they have a high enough income to benefit much that way, they are also probably participating in the stock market and they will know it does much better under Dems than Repubs, especially 45. I heard a broker say "the way I look at it money isn't blue or red, it's green" and go on to make the point about it doing better under Ds. I guess taxes might have to do with it for some, but I feel like misinformation and disinformation has a lot to answer for. (Have you seen the excellent Rachel Maddow section on those who say they favor 45 for "business reasons"?)

Expand full comment

May money be green everywhere!!

Tax cuts, yes. But the appeal also lies in racism, hatred of a government (i.e. Democrat government) that gives aid to the poor; perception of Democrats as the urban elite (as far a leadership goes, pretty true), etc.

Lucian, thank you for putting your finger on what's so vile about Trump. I've been reading lately about resentment, and how that must play a big part in his psyche--and that of the supporters you zeroed in on. Resentment is a powerful emotion that will motivate people to do terrible things, and as WE have seen, Trump is not one to pull *any* punch. Like Louis Kicha, "I fear for this country."

Expand full comment

Trump is brimful of resentment. It’s a powerful political force. Hitler knew that and tapped into it. Having inherited wealth, education, status, etc., does not liberate a weak, insecure person from seething resentment. Trump was a lackey to his vile, cruel, psychopathic father. Like an urban dog who’s been taught to steal wallets, he cannot change…. not that he has enough honesty and insight to want to. Part of his own “home grown” resentment stems from being shunned by the real (mostly invisible) NYC elite, in whose august ranks he desperately yearned to be accepted.

This sickening behavior is the real Trump and always has been, he just kept it in check when he was winning even in the first election. This time is different, because he knows he is losing and the really ugly side of him (it's always been there) is here for a little over two more weeks. I could go on and on about what a despicable human being he is, but what's the point if we all know it. Don't get discouraged because that's what he wants, flood the zone with shit, intimidate, scare everyone. He has operated this way his whole life in everything he's done, but we have a real simple solution, vote. Of the few people that I know that support and like him, that still talk to me, at this point the gloves are off, and I intended to shame them with "How Could You"? As Kamala says, "We're not going back."

I'm not sure how much his recent diatribes reflect deliberate strategy, and how much they reflect his mental deterioration.

When an old man is obsessed with sex and sexual matters, when what comes out of his mouth is untethered to social boundaries, these could be symptoms of Alzheimer's. If you put these recent incidents together with recent examples of his word salad and the fact that Fred had Alzheimer's, it's a pretty good bet that Donald is well on his way.

It's pretty ironic that his base continues to fawn on and follow their king as he descends into madness. Will they continue to cheer if he pulls down his pants and takes a shit on the stage, or if he proudly exhibits to them his beautiful willie? Will the press and his Republican acolytes still find ways to sanewash his behavior and pretend that all this is normal?

As the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, it's hard to believe we find ourselves again fighting Fascism on this scale. I've said from the beginning that Trump is a six-year-old whose biggest thrill is running into Grandma's tea party, dropping trou, waggling his weenie at all the proper ladies, and grooving on the resulting squeals.

And all of his followers are the first-grade C-students who think this performance is the coolest thing EVER.

Which is why grownups who know better refuse to squeal. We simply pick Junior up, take him to his room, and make him stay there until supper -- and then ground his ass for the next two weeks, once he apologizes to Grandma and her friends.

We need to respond to Trump in something recognizably resembling the same way. It'll involve crushing electoral defeats, and some court judgments, and we'll probably never get that apology. But he can't be out in public any more.
