Addressing "Anger Loses," whose comment has mysteriously disappeared: Boy, will you ever bend over backwards looking for some reason to blame the "media" for leading everyone astray when it comes to Trump and his minions, in this case, dear Judge Cannon. May I point out that it wasn't the "media' who showed us what a "bad judge" Cannon is. It was the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, who spent 29 pages pointing out just that, slapping her down on matters of fact, jurisprudence and precedent when they reversed her order about the 100 folders of classified documents the DOJ wants to use in its criminal investigation of Trump. That Circuit Court decision bordered on sarcasm as it went through Judge Cannon's various errors. The "media" can read Judge Cannon's various decisions, and you don't need to be an appeals court judge to recognize naked prejudice on behalf of Trump, what I called the MAGAness baked into the reasoning behind her decisions in this matter. It has clearly dawned on her that going along with Trump's request for a special master has backfired on him, and she's doing everything she can to wave away the odor of that particular backfire so Trump can get his limping vehicle back on the road. Neither she nor Trump is doing particularly well in that regard.

I didn't see the comment at issue, but must say that I have found that Substack Comments' delete option considerately allows second thoughts. I often post an impulsive reply, then realize it needs work, especially research, beyond online editing. I delete it and after fixing offline I submit again. Or I realize that I simply shouldn't have posted it at all. The last may or may not be what happened with the "Anger Loses" comment. At any rate, I'm glad you've never responded to any of the "mysteriously disappeared" comments I regretted posting.

Can DoJ appeal her MAGAness's latest stupidity? Seriously, I wonder what bubble "Judge" Cannon is living in that she thinks there will be no repercussions from her actions -- especially after the repercussions from her most recent actions are in 96-point blazing neon that make them hard to miss.

Perry Stein, WaPo:

“ 'There shall be no separate requirement on Plaintiff at this stage, prior to the review of any of the Seized Materials, to lodge ex ante final objections to the accuracy of Defendant’s Inventory, its descriptions, or its content,' Cannon wrote.

Her many "issues" seem to include ignorance, arrogance, hubris, idolatry, and of course, a complete lack of a moral compass - i.e. corruption. She follows the MAGA playbook, when (not if) wrong, double down and make a complete a$$ of yourself. I hope somebody or some entity jerks that robe and that bench away from her for good.

I’ve been thinking of my Mom a lot over the last 6 years. She could spot a scam artist, liar, grifter and low life from miles away. Even though she’s been dead for years, I could hear her voice grousing about the orange POS while he was the phony dummy on the apprentice and ever since. I can also hear her explaining to us when we were children the importance of integrity and developing a reliable, just, and humane character. She would have been appalled by Cannon and her despicable weakness as a person, her soul having been sold to the orange devil and beyond. Cannon is especially horrible because she very obviously flaunts her boot licking of a criminal, not because she’s a relatively ignorant attorney but because she’s a bad human being.

As a total novice on legal matters, I have to ask: why does this woman have such tremendous powers to overrule everything and everybody??? To be brazenly biased in t

-Rump’s favor with no limits to or checks on that favoritism? To have more power than the entire DOJ and the AG???

One element is that Judge Cannon was appointed ( by Trump) for life, as are all Federal Judges.

Isn't there an advise & consent process at all levels?

Expand full comment

Too late for advise & consent. But there’s an impeachment option at all levels.

Sure there is, but we've seen how hard that is to implement. On the whole, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" would seem to apply, and one of its attractions is that Democratic senators could play a significant role by vetting judicial appointments more carefully. The so-called responsible media -- not just news outlets but bloggers and podcasters who cover legal matters -- have a role to play too in pointing out the track records of lower-court nominees. At this point membership in the Federalist Society should be a waving red flag.

Keep in mind that if a judge were standing up against unjust laws and/or a hyper-conservative agency, you might consider it a good thing. The sword does cut both ways.

Judge Cannon can do whatever she wants until the 11th court of appeals smacks her again. The DOJ can come after her charging that she is overstepping the bounds of her authority. Mr. Trumps attorneys can obfuscate all they want only to be sanctioned by a higher court or face down the Bar Association. Trumps guilt will not evaporate, or fade away, it is rock solid and the moment of truth will come.

That smack-down seems to have had ZERO effect on her ability to decide matters in t-Rump’s favor. Will a second reprimand be equally ineffective?

Expand full comment

She's a federal judge. In general, public opinion means absolutely nothing to judges unless they're elected to the bench, which Cannon was not. She was overruled on appeal - NOT reprimanded.

but with all this back and forth,

isn't the most important thing the fact that investigators can still now go through the secret docs to see what potential damage could be done by that information being so readily accessible at MaL?

...and to try to find what happened to the stuff from the empty folders.

...and to maybe do the steps to check other trump properties.

She might have been simply unqualified. But THIS? Cannon is corrupt. I’m feeling sorry we welcomed her into this Country—to which she’s sworn allegiance. I wonder, when DID she become a citizen? And in what city?

It's not that she's in over her head. It's in another place and I won't go into that vulgar statement but you guys know what I mean. Shameless. She is corrupt, and can show it, now that she has Trump's future in mind.

i hope all this fooferall with judge I-lean-to-the-right, far, FAR right cannon, special masters, extra vendors, filings, liftings, dates changing, and more keeps trump's puny mind chasing these shiny things so that serious work can go on unimpeded.

i hope investigators are poring through surveillance tapes, finding others to interrogate, finding others who packed and carried boxes, nailing witnesses, checking fingerprints, and using their time to build a case to nail trump with Obstruction of Justice so solid that he'll be put away for 20 years.

and besides all that, i hope searches are successful in finding who might be holding docs or info given to them by trump. a charge of espionage or better still, treason, would warm my cockles.

Twenty years in prison? Wishful thinking! He will never spend a nanosecond behind bars. Cannon isn’t the only corrupt judge that t-Rump has appointed. There are many more of them out there, eager to make decisions in favor of their lord and master.

She is deep in the cult. Anyone deep in the cult I count as insane and beyond reach with reason or application of law. And yet she is a fucking judge and can continue to worship this totally ignorant, vulgar, malignantly narcissistic monster.

Dog park brown clearly identified. I've said earlier, I don't see AMC getting a job with a top drawer law firm, especially firms that hold themselves out as paragons of law practice. Political law firms are another matter. These are the guys who defend the indefensible; they are the guys for whom unethical behavior is expected to be baked in their character, rather than occasional lapses. Everyone knows who these gangsters are. Given a chance, they look for opportunities to behave unethically, just because they can. Judge Cannon fits the same cookie cutter pattern. Trump's old sidekick is the avatar of the type. But, what goes around comes around. Cannon already has a reputation for incompetence and hyper partisanship. Now we see it begin to metastasize.

none of that seems to be working out very well for her. and wasn't she something like a double- or triple-lame duck nomination? I just keep being amazed at how little these people feel the need to cover their sins with even the thinnest veneer of something like "respectability." I was brought up to accept that one of the points in telling lies is to not get caught. call me old-fashioned.

Judge Cannon is clearly in Jabba-the-Rump's pocket and is now acting as his defense attorney. Serious question for Lucian and other experienced JD's: Is there no higher judicial authority that can put a stop to this outrageous behavior? Can the 11th Circuit remove her from the case?
