Let’s start not with Florida man, but with Florida woman, Trump’s own chouchou d’obsequiousity, Judge Aileen Cannon, currently stroking her robes with a hand-steamer in her doubtlessly taupe colored bedroom somewhere in Vero Beach, Florida, in preparation for her Big Day tomorrow. When the news hit that Judge Cannon had drawn the Trump documents case in the Southern District of Florida, people, some of whom are readers of this column, reacted as if one of those pythons had slithered out of the Everglades and had wrapped itself around the American judicial system, ready to squeeze the life out of it.
I grew up across the marshes from Atlantic City, and lived & worked in the AC area until 2000.
I watched Trump's casino corporations run up huge bills with local businesses, then skip out on the debt. Each casino would develop as a new entity, but they were all deadbeats. That kind of coordinated (in my opinion) bankruptcy fraud can only be directed by the Slimeball in Charge.
Here's the result: I've hated Trump with a purple passion (as my mother would say) for over 40 years.
I want to see him broken, impoverished, imprisoned, and eventually interred when Nature takes Her course. And I want to see every bit of that process on TV.
I'm going to have this going on 3 screens tomorrow, with coffee, weed, and snacks.
I stayed at one of the trump hotels in Atlantic City in the early 2000s to attend s business conference. What a dump! It stank of mildew and cigarettes. Everything was run down and shabby. I would not have eaten there if the food was free
"What a dump! It stank of mildew and cigarettes. Everything was run down and shabby."
You just described Atlantic City perfectly.
When I was 7 or 8, my mother was driving me into AC on Albany Avenue. At a red light, she stabbed her forefinger at "The Monument" and declared, "Son, this is the Armpit of the Nation!"

Chalfont-Hadden Hall too. That was my AC. Also saw some theater at the Quarterdeck, a summer stock house. The Steel Pier (top acts—Stan Kenton, Henny Youngman) was next to the pier where I worked. I watched those horses dive into 20-foot hurricane waves—god only knows why. Animal rights activists in time finished off that act.
{For me this was a regular excursion in Tempe 1980-82}
For over 15 years, Grant led a Monday Night Big Band that was a fixture on the Phoenix jazz scene. Grant started the band as a weekly rehearsal band at M.C.C.. The Night Band soon moved out into public performances, playing a weekly Monday Night gig at The Varsity Inn, where the sax section sat on empty beer kegs. Grant's big band was first known simply as "The Night Band." In the early 80s, the band was rechristened as the "Valley Big Band". The band played at several other clubs before settling in at Chuy's Choo Choo in the late 70s, where Grant and the gang held forth on Monday nights for many years. Grant's Monday Night Band gave adult musicians a chance to perform every week alongside students from the local colleges. The musicians did not get paid, but played for the love of the music, and of course, the free beer! Monday nights at Chuy's were the place to be! On a typical Monday night, Grant would rehearse the band through some new charts during the first set. After the break, the band would play the tunes straight down. The Valley Big Band played at the 2nd edition of the Chuy's club, and they also played regularly at The L.P. Club in the 80s.
SCROLL DOWN to the bottom of the page to read the very excellent Valley Big Band News Article by Paul Cantrell from 1982 or '83. Grant is interviewed extensively. Paul Cantrell wrote music articles for the New Times paper during the 1980's.

Lots of forms of law and of justice. The opening of Foxwoods over the objections of Trump is an example of the law of the jungle and poetic justice.
Trump objected on the grounds the "indians" would fall prey to the Mob and most of all shouldn't get a license cause they were not real "indians" because he knows a real "indian" when he sees one. (Congressional Hearing found on YOUTUBE, Trump is hilarious esp. the red face comment).
We've been beating Trump for years. And one day we might storytell how we beat Nixon to the point he and his Adm had to pressure the courts to allow "injun casinos".
Wow! As a public health nurse, I worked with our Native American community before the casino. The poverty was awful. After the casino, new housing, health clinic, preschool, senior center, pride. And no corruption. Unlike tRump.
Yes, there have been successes along the lines you mentioned.
First of all ~Respect~ for working w/the ~people~. Is an eye opener for all who do.
Second, a shoutout to those in the medical profession who ask to be placed or take advantage of the bennies for working (finishing nursing requirements and docs completing residency) in a medical clinic on or near a Res. One bennie rarely mentioned is if married w/small children) their nannies are highly likely to be ~indigenous~. Not only does the medical professional absorb the culture, so too so their little ones.
The successful casino/hotel/resort operations target self-sufficiency across the entire Res. Takes decades and generations to achieve after what each has been through. They also contribute to a land fund which purchases back land around the Res or to other ~people~ to purchase back sacred lands. A not-so-secret secret. Or engage of swapping of land w/the NFS.
On the other hand, we have some apples. Red on the outside and yt in the inside. Their tells are love of drink, money, and fast, young wimmin not of blood. Their casinos do not come close to achieving what you listed but but but they do talk the talk. Rather than share they treat the casino as a piggy bank for those who keep the power concentrated in a few.
Just my cynical thought that the knowledgeable, crafty Mr. Smith is actually setting Ms. Cannon and the TiC up. Not sure how, but I’m guessing, and it is a guess, that the prosecutors have a clue what they’re doing here. I have faith in them.
IDK, he seems to have endless financial resources stemming from his grannies and Magats
taking money from their Social Security checks (from the hated go'ment). I do think that maybe Putin is too distracted to send more money but who knows? Kushner got two billion so maybe the Saudis own him more?
I think you're right and that Trump is badly under-estimating Jack Smith. I guess he's never heard of the Hague or of the war crime trials Mr. Smith prosecuted.
But then again, Donald Trump has never been a very inquiring mind.
Whatever mind TFG has is reptilian in nature. But, in this case he is up against a predator with a real one who knows how lower life forms behave. TFG is a garter snake. Smith is a python. Who you betting on?
I'll tell you what-I would never take on a federal prosecutor because they're like snakes-dangerous when you get them riled up.
I'd be a lot more circumspect if I were in Trump's position, because as the Miranda warning states: "Everything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law".
that reminds me of a funny story...when I was working as a HS counselor, I had a student whose family was into all kinds of animals. he came to work with a good-sized "tame" python and hid it in my office closet... without telling me. I don't know much about snakes, but I remembered lots of Frank Buck stories from when I was a kid, and pythons gave Frank Buck a LOT of trouble. so when he came at the end of the day to collect his pet, I was....uhh... not that happy. the "good part" was that I would have been a lot less happy if I'd known it was there.
Judge Cannon can easily be contained. First, there will be talks about whether or not to request that she recuse herself. Then if Mr. Smith decides to go with her anyway, she KNOWS she will be under a looking glass, subject to removal by the 11th Circuit if she shows clear bias. The evidence here is so strong that the verdict should not be a surprise. She could try to delay the trial so that Trump might be elected and then shut down the prosecution, but Smith has sent war criminals to prison - a biased second-rate US judge would be child's play.....
If this is true, she's even stupider than I thought. If she leans toward tfg, she will get spanked again, and if leans away, she will enrage the magats. A lose/lose situation.
Joyce Vance pretty much confirmed that, but it is not Judge Cannon's choice - the 11th Circuit Court gets to decide and they can decide that she is a bit too radioactive for a fair trial.
I think they're on the look out for tell tale signs of her bias, and so is Jack Smith, who will without a doubt pull rank and appeal her appointment to the case. There are other district judges who can hear the case. She's not the only person with a law degree.

Just before reading your article, I was reading Ken White's (Popehat) latest article-which is a very cogent and intelligent reasoning on why we must prosecute Trump no matter how popular he is or whatever the reason everyone thinks we shouldn't do it.
I recommend everyone read it, to see how the law should work and maybe we don't always win, but at least, we do the best we can with what we have.
Anything that has me laughing from the first sentence is - as my granddaughter says - “fire”. The flow of this is as reassuring as the message. Thanks for this.
One theory is that it wasn’t random. She got it because she’d already handled the search warrant special master business. Also the clerk assigns the judges; I’m not so sure she uses a random numbers table. She could either be in the tank for Trump, or she could have assigned it based on Cannon’s history with the case.
The circuit court, which slapped her down so gloriously on the special master, doesn’t seem inclined to put up with any funny business from her.
I’m really hoping Smith can get a new one. It will help. How can we take the justice system seriously with such an obviously unqualified sycophant handling the case?
Agree. I’m asking every substack writer about the actual “random”‘process. Names out of a hat? A clerk’s whim? No answers yet. Hoping some facts come out soon so we know how that selection happened.
It has been, of course that someone who knew Trump well, once was asked if Trump was rich, and the person responded that "“Trump’s not a billionaire. I’m a billionaire. Trump is a clown, living on credit.”
The wheels of justice are grinding slowly. He's just running the Roy Cohn playbook. I'm betting he's sleeping poorly and filling his XXXL diaper on a regular basis. Judge Cannon won't save his sorry ass.
Perhaps, just perhaps, Judge Loose Cannon was embarrassed by having her butt slapped by the 11th district in the reversal of her Special Master decision. Maybe, just maybe she’ll won’t be such a kiss ass to Traitor Tot in the trial. I’ll be watching the arraignment tomorrow. I wonder if the MAGAts will show up armed and what the Secret Service and police response will be.
It has been reported that she won't be presiding over the ceremonies today, and that a proper magistrate judge will.
I wonder who made the mistake of assigning a trial judge to do a magistrate's job? A rookie, of course. Because the courts have a system and one does not mess up in it.
Thanks for this essay, LKTIV. I appreciate the long view and the pragmatism with which you're addressing this case.
<sidebar> How would you like your readers to address you? Calling you Lucian seems to be to familiar for me, I don't recall your Army rank, else I could call you that. I want to convey both appreciation and respect.
She won't even hear the plea, it will be the same Magistrate Judge who issued the original search warrant! But there is no shortage of mischief that can accrue, especially once the jury is empaneled and "jeopardy" has attached! The prosecution has its work cut out, they may regret lodging venue in this district!
They had no choice - the alleged crimes took place in this jurisdiction so the trial has to be in the same location. The charges could be thrown out if the trial were held elsewhere without a formal change of venue hearing..... The Supremes are at this moment hearing a case involving a wrong venue, and the perp may walk with no chance of retrial if the gubmint loses.
Isn't it a little suspect that if there were 17 possible judge choices, she was the one that was selected. What are the odds? Maybe I'm paranoid, but in this day and with these people I find everything possibly suspect.....
I read actually it's more like 7, the other 10 are disqualified by various process rules. Anyway she pretty much has to recuse if the federal recusal law means anything...
Perspective-taking is very valuable in seriously stressful times. Thank you for your calm and logical essay. When Bill Barr says if half of the charges are true, trmp is toast, it is indeed time to lean back, not lean in. If I were a gambler, my money would be on Jack Smith, who is not going to watch his reputation be ruined by the likes of The Donald, who has trouble retaining competent counsel.
Trump appointed Judge Cannon's recent past dealing with Trump issues in her court is certainly cause for concern for any of us that want nothing more than a fair trial. It was after all, American citizens who indicted him. It is therefore conceivable that he will receive a fair trial by a jury of more American citizens if the court is competent.
But will it be fair with Cannon as the judge. Circumstances say she may continue in her pervious, mischievous, judicial ways on matters that pertain to the Scaramouche of Mar-A-Lago. According to former AG Holder she can very legally keep tying proceedings up so that the trial extends to 2025.
A real kicker is Saudi Arabia's influence in this trial. We know of Trump's ties to the Saudi Prince. We know of Jared's ties to the Saudi Prince. Evidently, it is not well known there are Judge Cannon's ties to Saudi Arabia. The Judge's husband is the COO of Bobby's Burgers of Charlotte, NC. He has contracted to put Bobby Burgers restaurants in Saudi Arabia.
IF Judge Cannon lacks the integrity to recuse herself. Special Counsel Smith should aggressively help her with that decision.

Dead on, Bruce. Cannon right now as we post is calculating how to get out of this and preserve what is left of a career in law.
Joyce Vance on her blog just reported that the scuttlebutt is that Judge Cannon has declined to recuse herself.....and we're off.....!
If this is true, she's even stupider than I thought. If she leans toward tfg, she will get spanked again, and if leans away, she will enrage the magats. A lose/lose situation.
She may have become suddenly (secretly) richer than before...
Certainly not the sharpest knife in the drawer.....
Of course. she won't recuse. This is her chance to go down in the history books. Why would she pass that up?
Joyce Vance pretty much confirmed that, but it is not Judge Cannon's choice - the 11th Circuit Court gets to decide and they can decide that she is a bit too radioactive for a fair trial.
I think they're on the look out for tell tale signs of her bias, and so is Jack Smith, who will without a doubt pull rank and appeal her appointment to the case. There are other district judges who can hear the case. She's not the only person with a law degree.
THAT 's hopeful news
Just before reading your article, I was reading Ken White's (Popehat) latest article-which is a very cogent and intelligent reasoning on why we must prosecute Trump no matter how popular he is or whatever the reason everyone thinks we shouldn't do it.
I recommend everyone read it, to see how the law should work and maybe we don't always win, but at least, we do the best we can with what we have.

It is worth the time. Really.
Anything that has me laughing from the first sentence is - as my granddaughter says - “fire”. The flow of this is as reassuring as the message. Thanks for this.
Ditto. Ditto. Ditto!
"ChouChou d'obsequiosity"--brilliant!
"...currently stroking her robes with a hand-steamer in her doubtlessly taupe colored bedroom somewhere in Vero Beach, Florida..."
Now THAT is an image! Thank you, sir.
That was hilarious!
And with Melania it works as a pun on "cabbage," too!
Thank you for the optimism. We need to calm down and let SC Smith present his case.
I've heard several references to a Wheel for judge selection. But also the theory that she was selected due to her previous connection to the case.
1 out of 17 = 6%
I'd ask to have those "dice" checked.
Yes, they should check the dice because in a state like Florida, loading them is a standard action.
But of course we won't stoop to think there could ever be corruption in the courts. Never..
Thank you for reminding us to take a deep breath and not hold our breath til we turn blue and faint.
I truly do feel better.
Jack Smith is pursuing a strategy to assure indictment and conviction.
South Florida-espionage act violations
Washington DC-Insurrection charges still developing.
NJ- Trump is on tape showing a classified document and acknowledging it is classified.
South Florida is the distraction.
Jack Smith had him in charges in Washington and NJ.
(Alvin Bragg has felony charges in process. Fanni Willis quite likely will file a felony bill for racketeering.)
Trump doesn’t have the financial resources to fight a 5 front war. (I believe that He is technically bankrupt if you really peel his finances apart.)
Jack Smith and his fellow prosecutors are pursuing a strategy for victory.
It was always my thinking that he refused to show his tax returns because they would show that he was flat out broke.
Broke and a tax cheat.
It has been, of course that someone who knew Trump well, once was asked if Trump was rich, and the person responded that "“Trump’s not a billionaire. I’m a billionaire. Trump is a clown, living on credit.”

Thanks for the reminders, Lucian.
Any way you want to. I like both my initials and my name. Blessed with good ones.
My default honorifics are "sir" and "ma'am," with as much accuracy as I can muster. My mother raised me right.
Your Most Informed Insightliness?
Ah a Tip O'Neil reference. The first rep I ever voted for as a college student in Boston. Good memory.
Plus, as I heard this morning, they could only file charges against Nauta in Florida. I think Nauta is key to the Conspiracy charges.
Isn't it a little suspect that if there were 17 possible judge choices, she was the one that was selected. What are the odds? Maybe I'm paranoid, but in this day and with these people I find everything possibly suspect.....
The arraignment tomorrow is not being handled by the Canon but by a good espectro Magistrate.
Respected. 💥
I read actually it's more like 7, the other 10 are disqualified by various process rules. Anyway she pretty much has to recuse if the federal recusal law means anything...
Don’t count on it!
I trust Jack Smith to know what he's doing.
