very beautifully said. I KNEW that there was something bugging me about the weird proximity of those two stories. but you tied it all together like a beautifully-wrapped package.

The only legit and non-violent way to turn this tide is to VOTE. The 2022 election is every bit as critical as the 2020 election. DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO SIGN UP DEMOCRATIC VOTERS AND GET THEM TO THE POLLS - AND THEN VOTE YOURSELF.

Not only this news now. We have Justice Alioto’s brief that was “accidentally” leaked and picked up by Politico which is defying women’s rights by the suggestion that Roe vs. Wade be overturned!! I cannot stand it! The Republican Party caused Watergate, the war in Iraq, an insurrection on our Capitol, allowed Putin, Jr. to be president, allowed him to retain power even though he had been impeached TWICE, tried to besmirch Ketanji Brown Jackson, etc. etc. etc….May they all go to hell!

Carlson and his ilk are every bit as despicable as you describe, and anyone who’s been paying attention has been watching it unfurl like the blood red flag of Nazi Germany for decades.

But I haven’t seen anyone come up with any sort of prescription for how to roll it back in any meaningful way.

Not the first time NYT exercised poor editorial judgment.

Maybe page three? But fighting against liar Goebbels Carlson is necessary. Call out the evil for what it is. Spewed of hate and propaganda of the worst sort. Defending war criminals like Putin and traitors like TFG

Seth, do you think the NYT series qualifies as "fighting against liar Goebbels Carlson"? I don't. Nowhere close. It's giving him a platform, probably in the name of some version of journalistic integrity. It's possible to write about Carlson without splashing it on the front page with big photos. Page 3 would be OK, but the Sunday magazine would be better.

Too bad no funny papers in the Times.

Magazine would be better. TC s an American Goebbels. Shame the light and expose his lies

We saw the likes of Tucker Carlson in homegrown Fascist movements throughout Europe and the Americas in the prewar years. Same message the second time around.

Tucker is trash its sad how many people tune in to that every day. I think if we survive this tragedy in Ukraine we will have a wonderful little growing fascist movement in the Ukraine that will fit right in with the way hungary, turkey, Poland etc. Are moving... And heavily armed too. But at at least they wont be commies lol

what infuriates me is carlson tells his hearers (no way are they listening) that "the elite rich and powerful" are working to debase them, to take their savings away and to bend their minds to their way of thinking. (i know a lot of mixed pronouns here but).

but the damning thing is that HE is the rich and powerful elite who is doing exactly THAT to THEM. how stupid and gullible are his hearers? rhetorical question. just had to rant.

and further, what makes my blood boil is seeing that ruskie tv runs clips of carlson's show over and over. an apt sobriquet: Tuckyo Rose Carlton

Yes, Tucker is the current salesman for a new not so brand of authoritarian fascism and totalitarianism. And, yes, he and Fox make millions from misleading and deluding millions of their viewers with lies and slickly delivered propaganda that is designed to sell myth rather than truth. But ..................................................

What is it about so many of us that allows us to be so easily deceived and led toward the self destruction of our society and liberties? What is it within so many of us which enables the lies to take hold and fester like a disease and, yes, spread to a too large segment of our body politic? What is it about the core Fox audience which is primarily older less educated rural and white folk which provides such a target rich audience for Tucker, Sean and the rest of the Fox and Friends?

At some point we have to admit to ourselves we are in a real civil war . On one side are those who support and willing to defend our bedrock values of democracy, personal liberties and opportunity for all. On the other side is an approximate third of the population which for who knows what combination of reasons sees those values and those who hold them anachronistic to their own values and goals. Yes, I believe we must conclude the Fox and Friends are in the business of selling a bad product and they have identified a cohort of our population which is not just willing but able to buy it regardless of how defective it is going to turn out not just for the rest of us but them in the longer run.

It is time we stop believing "we are all in this together" and "we have God given rights." We are not and it seems the other side seems to believe their God is only on their side and he has decided the rest of us need to adopt their opinions or be consigned to live our lives with less rights than they are entitled to. We are in a real culture war and Tucker Carlson and , yes, those who buy his schtick are the warriors for a new fascism in America. Time we stop believing this problem is going to be fixed by autopilot . In a few weeks our Highest Court is going to reverse Roe. If Team Tucker has its way, it will be only the first in a wave of steps back in time.

The story about Carlson in the NYT was a hurried mess. The only thing I “learned” from it was how his career failure coinciding with his four children entering their college years was supposed to explain his embrace of fascism.

I’m by no means a legal expert but the Rico Act allows for civil cases against criminal organizations. If the Trump “Republican” Party was labeled correctly, an organized criminal enterprise, seems it could be sued, say for 100 billion, with its assets frozen pending outcome of the lawsuit. This would include all national, state, and local branches. Sections of RICO cover money laundering (illegal campaign contributions), witness intimidation and tampering, obstruction of justice, and other such crimes as we have seen surface in the congressional hearings.
