This is a day when two very distinctive things occurred. This morning, Donald Trump told a conservative radio audience that he will issue full pardons and apologize to the insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021 and assaulted Capitol and Metropolitan Police, causing more than 140 to suffer injuries serious enough to require medical attention. “I mean full pardons with an apology to many,” Trump told a right-wing radio host.
Comparing weather events in 2022 with the past might no longer be reliable or useful. Pakistan is having a once in 1000 year flood. That odd looking statistic was somehow reached even though they only have weather statistics going back to 1961. Floods, heat waves, all kinds of weather events are breaking records. Those records probably don’t mean anything anymore. We are in a new place.
Similarly, predicting how the midterms will break is probably not relevant anymore if you are using the last few decades as a basis of comparison. We are no longer in a society where the Republicans and conservatives and whites are in the majority.
My opinion, fwiw: the Obamas broke the mold, and then the Georgia U.S. Senate race on January 5, 2021, magically miraculously and stunningly turned the Senate blue by replacing 2 white Republican incumbents with two Democratic challengers, a black and a Jew, in a Southern state.
Can you imagine what the odds must’ve been for that to happen?
Since I don’t believe in long shots that improbable, I think it was a breaking point.
I propose that we consider the United States is moving into a new domain, a society where the whites no longer have control like they used to. The people who support a white society are now the Republicans. Donald Trump lost his reelection bid. That’s hard to do. That moment is an inflection point. Anyone who just takes it for granted that, because of history, the midterms are going to go red, is not paying attention to the signs.
I can’t say I’m surprised that the tide seems to be turning in favor of the blue side. I’ve sort of been half expecting it since early this year. So many pundits and journalists are in denial of what is happening right in front of their eyes: The Republican Party is showing every sign of self-destructing. The internecine warfare is at an all time high. Zero unity. Trump has not been on Fox News in four months. Good chance he’s not going back, because the Murdochs and all their noise outlets have turned against him. Now even Biden is going prime time to attack him and his followers.
The time of whites-first and males-first society is ending in the US. That’s what all the signs are saying. And I don’t think there’s a snowballs chance in hell that Trump is even going to run. He just lost last time. And now all the support and all those media cheerleaders are falling away and disappearing by the week.
I feel happy … and I believe we are going to be coming out of the tunnel. Trump’s demise is not something to hope for to bring light, as in some kind of salvation. It is the light of our national recognition that a diverse society of equal rights IS the salvation, and that national recognition of what is good for us as a people is the light which brings about Trump's demise. We are saying goodbye to him because we are saying goodbye to racism, sexism and genderism. Endings are messy. But that’s what it takes to have a beautiful beginning.
And Lucian’s smorgasbord of schadenfreude is right in there. Freude = Joy. It’s the joy of seeing the destruction of the hegemony of whites-first racism and males-first sexism.
Love the optimism! But given the BILLIONS that are pumped into the Crime Syndicate aka the GOP, I fully expect them to use their Mercer Analytics to pump out a new version of Gaslighting that weak minds will latch on to. The South is literally COOKED, yet they send their Dirty Energy representatives to Congress. In Nebraska, Don Bacon simply buys ads that falsely claim support for legislative wins he voted against, like capping insulin costs. Repugs stoop to any low in effort to secure power and it costs them nothing. That court-appointed judge in Florida is actually giving weight to tRump’s arguments for a “special master.” Oh, so special, these fascist crooks . . .
One caveat: "That odd looking statistic was reached even though they only have weather statistics going back to 1961," with respect to a "1000 year flood" in Pakistan, or to Eastern Kentucky having three "Hundred Year Rain Events" in the span of days, etc., reflects a confusion about weather records, climate science, and the geological record.
Scientists understand the earth's temperature variables going back millions of years. Climate science uses dendrochronology, i.e., tree rings, and ice core samples as temperature record proxies. That's one reason why the presence of so much heat-trapping greenhouses in the earth's atmosphere is meaningfully compared to an era millions of years ago, and scares the bejeezus out of climate scientists.
Those so inclined should review the "top climate myths" and brief refutations on the front page of this website, to better argue the case against, no surprise here, the same kind of blovating dunces who support Trump's big lie, and claim the January 6 seditious insurrection was comparable to a tourist visit to the Capitol.
Mary, I love everything you write, and I would just like to comment on one piece of your post here:
Yes, airing our dirty laundry in public is making us look bad to the neighbors. But consider that such a momentous change in a society, going from a whites-first males-first system to a diversity and equal rights system, is messy. Very messy.
But oh so beautiful. I don’t think we should look at the United States right now as an embarrassment. Right now, we are making a fundamental change that could easily have a profound effect on the whole world. European countries have already done it, now we are doing it: going to a society where whites do not come first, where men do not come first, and where heteros do not come first.
Sometimes there’s a little dark-night-of-the-soul before you get to the light at end of the tunnel.
I should have put in a little more to explain that last sentence too-we are indeed making a change, as you write, and it's kinda difficult to maneuver away from the 200 car pile up we've been in for the last few years-but it is worth it, in the long run.
It's just getting everyone into the same room to talk about it that's the hardest part. I think we're getting better at it, (and at least this dangerous talk of a civil war is lessening.) but we've still got a lot of people who need to be persuaded to at least try.
Biden should be commended for speaking out about it. All the Republicans are making a big mistake to think he wouldn't-he's not a coward, and he's willing to put himself out there-but they sure don't like it when he calls them out on their devotion to Trump.
I applaud him for it. It's about time we started to talk down the anger of people who have been conned by Trump and make them see that we're not monsters.
I fear the opposite. The results of climate change will polarize us further as we fight for dwindling ressources and land. I foresee a future that looks more like “Mad Max, Fury Road.”
I fear that the European countries have not advanced nearly as much as one might think, and that the US has made more progress in many ways. I grew up in Europe and moved back there for a few years in the mid-2000s, expecting what you describe. What I found instead is that there are few openings for non-whites and women. Systemic racism and sexism is so prevalent that it is barely discussed. Perhaps less so in Scandinavia, but very much so in France, Switzerland, Spain, Italy etc…Women are tolerated in politics, to some extent, because politics is not actually considered to matter much.
I'm not surprised. France, as you know, is one of the countries that Napoleon gave the "Napoleonic Code of Law" and in that, put women back into the kitchen. That itself did a lot of damage that women have been fighting for centuries.
Sexism is rampant there, and so is racism. Most Americans would be surprised to learn the French are intolerant of any naturalized French person-be they Vietnamese, or Chadians, or Algerians. If they're not white, they're not considered 'authentic' French.
I myself saw the interaction between a white Frenchwoman and a Vietnamese man once-she called him a thief when he tried to beg from her.
It shocked me, but it did not my father, who translated what they were screaming about. He told me later that racism is just as bad in Europe as it is here, but we don't live there.
Biden exceeded all my expectations tonight by a mile. I can’t wait until tomorrow, MAGATs butthurt will register on the surface of the sun. GOP is going down in 2022.
Right now it's registering big-time on Twitter. The likes of Kayleigh McEnany and Nikki Haley think President Biden's speech was the most divisive thing they ever heard.
Ear wax? What in the world can give them that interpretation of Biden’s words. This just shows that hearing is processed not thru the ears but Thru the brain and its preconceived schemas
They're reacting to Biden's words, not interpreting them. They're aware that the words were aimed at them, so they're throwing up their shields to deflect them. Either they don't know how ridiculous they look or they just don't care. (Remember when Trump responded to Hillary Clinton's suggestion that he was Putin's puppet? His comeback was "You're the puppet." A very first-grade playground comeback.)
Seems to me she rather wishes she had done something of the sort. She's written, IIRC in WHAT HAPPENED, about how her good-girl training got in the way.
Ha, ha, ha...imagine Haley and McNinny thinking that was the "most divisive thing they have ever heard..."? Huh. They must have had huge earwax problem all the while they were in Washington, D.C., then. Spineless Kevin McCarthy also made a point to say it was the most divisive speech ever.
What utter drivel--clearly they all get their talking points from the same source and as always the painfully obvious GQP tactic is to project the same dirt (with "crocodile" outrage) onto the Dems, in which they themselves have been happily rolling.
tRump-appointed judges need to recuse themselves from tRump’s cases. He packed the courts with a deliberate purpose in mind, and now we are seeing such a judge acquiescing to ridiculous demands for a “master” and considering further release of DOJ materials. Why isn’t the news filled with reports of our OVERSEAS INTELLIGENCE AGENTS BEING KILLED OFF? TRump is a traitor and he has irrevocably damaged our national security.
If Trump wouldn't pardon those who rioted on his behalf before he left office, what makes anyone think he would do that two years from now. But his supporters continue to believe that Trump will be true to his word. That's the definition of stupidity, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
I'm a numbers guy. Have to admit I was shocked when tfg got 8 million more votes in 2020 than in 2016. I learned there are a LOT more racists, white supremacists, and assholes in our country than i ever imagined. If it's true that the fascist base is really 35%, then the next 2 elections will be determined by turnout (and the courts, of course). Feels like the blue team has the momentum and the issues on our side. And Biden has found his voice and is really hitting his stride. Let's hope luck has finally run out for the other guy.
And those who died, too. Appalling FPOTUS. The lines are really and truly drawn. Can’t wait to hear more from you about the judge who is wondering if executive privilege might not extend after the President leaves office. ❤️🤍💙
Last November a federal judge had to remind Trump’s legal team that “Presidents are not kings, and the plaintiff is not the President.” And, I would add, we have only one President at a time. Someone needs to remind judge Cannon of this.
I believe she is truly out of her depths on this one-if you read the last motion the DOJ submitted they made no bones in their words that they have DT dead to rights and that she is indeed wrong in taking up the cause.
I've seen both a prosecutor and defense lawyer write contemptuous motions to each other and where the judge read it as such-he slapped them down with another one that told them to knock it off or he would hold them both in contempt.
This judge wouldn't understand that the DOJ just did that to her and it's as contemptuous as can be had without crossing the line.
They're right to call her on it. She's stupid to get involved and this is way out of her pay grade. She should just withdraw from the case and send DT on his way.
I look at her as just another robed MAGAt useful idiot who will willingly throw herself, her reputation and her career down the drain for a wink and a nod from Putin's tool. She will only display her ignorance if she allows herself to be drawn into this "nothing burger' as Neal Katyal calls it.
Just finished researching for piece on the artist who in 1917 had his first solo show closed for obscenity in Paris, of all free-wheeling venues. Nearly one hundred years later, one of his nude paintings sold for in New York City more than $170 million. Not much good for Modigliani, but a lesson in free-market economy.
So there is hope for all of us, but we may have to wait awhile! Meanwhile, let's appreciate the fact that messy, electoral politics keeps us alert to the dangers of encroachment by the Behemoths who would tear down what 245 years of these United States have produced thus far.
I was very impressed by President Biden's speech, not least because the longtime master of bipartisanship had to travel a long and challenging road to be able to give it. But I can't help thinking that it's easier to call out MAGA Republicans, even the ones in high places, than to contemplate calling out the multimillionaires, billionaires, and corporations who bankroll them and are doing so much to pull the rug out from under our democracy. And our planet, I should add, having just seen another ExxonMobil ad extolling all it's doing to mitigate climate change (without ever quite calling it that).
Trump goes on these shows so he can prove to himself that he’s relevant. He’s not and I can’t stand it when news orgs run his voice. It’s like chalk on a wall, makes me wince. The sooner he digs his grave a few more feet, the better.
He's a drama queen and an attention hog. Yech what a loser. Even though he was a fit-insky in New York for most of his life as a Democrat and didn't convert to Republican until his presidential campaign, I don't hold that against him, because he is definitely a much better fit as a Republican. He's the noisiest racist and sexist and antisemite and antigay dirt bucket in the country, and I agree, Marlene, it's time to pull the plug. We have to be very happy the Murdochs turned their back on him, that's his biggest broadcast amplifier gone.
Yes, Exactly right. like the age old battle between good and evil. Not that as he said all Republicans are femi fascists but enough of them to great influence the party's tendencies to the far right. ome Republicans are aghast at what is happening but too afraid to speak op for fear of reprisals. In a much harsher way that is how the Third Reich gained power, instilling fear in opponents. But how can an decent Republican support a man who calls the insurgents who attacked police, threatened the life of the vice president and tried in several different ways to steal the election patriots, and would pardon them if he could?
One of two things will happen in November. Republicans will fail to retake the House which will throw the party into total disarray because they’ll have to either finally deal with Trump or continue to alienate more Americans. Neither choice is good for them.
Or they win the House and spend the next two years in the majority showing America how batcrap insane they actually are with sham investigations of Hunter Biden and committees led by loons like Greene, Gosar, Boebert, Jordan ad infinitum.
You don't deal with an authoritarian bully through bi-partisanship, and Biden is correct to publicly recognize that. This is not about working with what used to be the GOP in a bi-partisan manner, because it is no longer the GOP, but the MAGA GQP. There are many individuals who were formerly part of the GOP, and who may still call themselves Republican, but who have no stomach for the MAGA GQP and cult of Trumpism, which is based on nothing more than bigotry, cruelty, hatred and power and control over others. The former is who Biden is appealing to in the spirit of bi-partisanship, to defeat the dark forces that Trump has unleashed. Those are the people who can be part of a bi-partisan coalition to defeat Trumpism and all the evil it represents. There is no dealing with the MAGA GQP.
I sorely hate to draw what, to some, may seem a trite comparison, but in light of the release of the Lord of the Rings prequel, think of it as the hobbits, elves, dwarves and humans, often at odds with each other at different points in Tolkien's fantasized world, but uniting against the evil forces of the sorcerer Sauron when it really counts. In our own reality, that is what happened when the world was faced with, and came together to defeat, the evils of a Nazi Germany. It is that stark a comparison that exists within our country today. And as is so often said, those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.
Let’s keep this in mind:
Comparing weather events in 2022 with the past might no longer be reliable or useful. Pakistan is having a once in 1000 year flood. I am having visions of a Tochter aus Elysium, from Schiller's poem, as heard in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony!
it's been reported by a few sources.

It appears that people are tiring of Trump and his minions attempting to divide the country and foster hatred on each other.
Hatred is such a limiting, defeating, tiring, exhausting emotion-and I don't wonder that people who used to follow Trump are too tired to do so now.
His narcissism does not allow him to admit people are tiring of him, hence he screams all the time.
Biden is right to take on this hateful dangerous man with the ego the size of Manhattan and the ethics or morals of a snake.
We have to appeal to our better angels and work to get back into that lane. This ain't no way to run a country.
We used to be admired-now we're laughed at and mocked for having allowed a bigoted fool with money run us to ground.
I'm tired of Donald Trump, as are millions of people, Democrat and Republican alike.
The sooner he's in federal prison the better-and our country can come back to its' senses.
It's gonna be a long road back but the longest journey begins with a single step.

Give 'em Hell, Harry! Er, Joe!
"The line has been drawn, the curse it is cast..." "Which side are you on, boy, which side are you on?"
A House of Horrors.
With more insurrectionists still awaiting trial how is Trump's waving of future pardons not witness tampering?
