Thank you. I also read your column at Salon about guns and gun nuts. I wish people would hear you. I'm so sick and tired of people like my insane neighbor (which I don't have) can go out, buy a AK 47 with a fully functional semi-auto function and blow away 200 people in the space of 10 minutes because the Supreme Court said the 2nd Amendment (which should have been removed a long time ago) says he can. I know what that gun can do. I've seen it fired. There is absolutely no need at all for any civilian in this country to own one. I support any gun legislation that will remove them from their hands. I know, "2nd Amendment!" and I say, "fuck your right to kill me."

Guns are increasingly lethal and obtained with ease. It is said that people with the Gold make the Rules. During social unrest, the people with Guns make the Rules. Not good, but welcome to America.

Issue every citizen a musket rifle and a flintlock pistol.

Any crimes committed with any other pistol or rifle...AUTOMATIC DEATH PENALTY.

Damn. I like that idea. Fits the Constitution perfectly.

I thought so...love to see the Originalist response.

If the Republicans truly want the weaklings, racists and drooling losers to buy guns then I suppose the logical reason for this position is their desire for these people to eradicate or eliminate the intended victims. This is a much darker and sinister road we are traveling than I imagined. Yeah, a weak-chin is always a dead giveaway too.

"A weak chin is always a dead giveaway"? I hope not. I agree with the rest of your post.

Of course not...tongue in cheek.

I'm distressed by the "incel" guys who claim that lacking an inch or so of lower jawbone has blighted their love lives. It hasn't done that to me.

Why is that shape chin called “weak”? Probably takes an punch better than the pointy ones… 🤔😉😊

I haven't read a more complete explanation than yours of the what and why and how of permissive gun laws in this nation. Thank you.

Excellent writing. Lucian understands firearms and gun politics. The Age of Aquarius has yet to arrive in full bloom. There are about 15,000,000 AR15 rifles in the USA.

You have something against people with weak chins? I disguise mine with a beard.

Seriously, the argument I hear for the continued relevance of the Second Amendment is that we need an "armed citizenry" to keep government in check, or to mount a guerilla campaign if it becomes too oppressive. What this fails to recognize is that the way to keep government in check is through the ballot box, and that any future guerilla war is likely to be fought electronically rather than with firearms.

I agree that keeping the government "in check" and against it being "too oppressive" are oft-cited reasons for permissive gun laws, in order to provide an "armed citizenry." If anything, Trump has promoted guns by causing doubt in free and fair elections as a "check" against oppressive government. He did it for his own selfish purposes and egged on use of weapons for the "oppressed." If only they would see his selfishness and your point that firearms are likely to be an obsolete method in a future guerrilla war. Good for shooting up the Capitol, though, and mass shootings that kill everyone from school children, to Asian workers when someone "has a bad day."

And we do remember Trump telling a rally--in reference to the election--that there was "always the Second Amendment."

It’s The Shock Doctrine—they WANT to keep us divided and fighting amongst ourselves—that’s how the Lily White guys can come in and “preserve order,” actually taking away freedoms while their billionaires gobble up profits. “Trickle down economics makes peons of us all”.

True. Neither will be confiscated by the state or federal government. Some states have a waiting period of a week to ten days. Uncle Sam will not be passing laws to confiscate firearms. Not in my lifetime. Don't blame me. Reality is a bitch!
