Well…the short answer is, Donald Trump will appeal his conviction. But here’s where it gets interesting. There is a way to appeal a criminal conviction in the state of New York. First, you file a notice of appeal. Then you file your appeal with the Appellate Division, which is the first appellate court to hear criminal cases in New York. In Trump’s case, that would be the First Department of the Appellate Division, hearing cases tried in Manhattan and the Bronx. If the conviction you’re appealing included a fine, you must either pay the fine in advance or post a bond guaranteeing the fine will be paid if you lose your appeal.
Gee, who'd be a Noem puppy? There"s a vicious, cackling hag for you! In her last life, I have on good authority, she was a knitter under the guillotine counting the heads as they rolled.
I remain astonished that many of the leaders and a third of the population of a country of 342 million people will kowtow to Trump, a cruel, ignorant, pathological criminal. Is this the best we can do? Is this the best we can be?
I'm more generous. I just want a stroke that doesn't kill him but completely eliminates his ability to speak or write. He can claim through surrogates that his blood clots are interfering with his campaign and that's SO unfair.
I used to think that also, but after all this time, it bothers me that our tax dollars would be paying for his long term care. There are Americans out there who need it and deserve it and can't get it because of assholes like him trying to demolish healthcare. On the bright side though, him being an invalid would be cosmic justice precisely because he ridicules impaired people. (I agree, as long as he can't communicate...then he can't complain about anything, finally!)
I for one have no doubt $CROTUS intends to bail him out of all of it. Democrats have to decide if they want to expand or contract $CROTUS or walk away and shrug their shoulders as America slips away into history. The foundation for reform has to be laid, and too much time has already been wasted.
Interesting and thorough primer on NY state criminal justice system. The primary lesson being, don't be caught criming in NY. Adds to no matter how rich you are when you defame someone below you in fame and fortune chances are a New York Jury will make you pay a steep price. So, respect to New Yorkers from this Bostonian.
Comment: Shame on the media. Rather than wait for the day's full trial transcript to spout off (both speaking out of turn and out of school)) they ignore 90% of what is being said only to react to <10%.
To a person journos and attys praise the virtues of the American Justice system, then turn around to play Judge, both prosecution and defense counsels, and Jury 9 AM to midnight. All they manage to accomplish is to reaffirm opinion is the lowest form of hooman knowledge and hooman intellect.
Larger point goes to the nation and her people's lack of patience with others and with events beyond an individual's control. And is a cultural marker other nations, cultures, and people correctly note about us. Said another way, an impatient society is rarely if ever a polite society.
Most Americans likely think and believe other states and commonwealths have laws and a Justice System pretty much like their home state. Heck, pretty hard to find 2 states with the same definitions and degrees of homicide. On a personal note, miss Massachusetts's in/famous Blue Laws and the fact Sheriffs are mostly an administrative link back East in the Justice System rather than a major cog as in the South and West. Out West Sheriff Depts. more often than not seek to escalate a situation rather than de-escalate.
Your kittens are insanely cute! Thank you for that picture. It’s very comforting to immerse myself in their adorability, and to reflect that the world is full of creatures who know nothing and care even less than that about TFFG.
I will keep writing postcards to Democratic voters, and donating what little I can, as strategically as possible. And even though hope is not a plan, let alone a solution, I’m nevertheless hoping hard for an “act of God” or an “unforeseen medical event”.
Great column and brilliant, eye-opening, head-exploding analysis. And it’s depressing as hell.
Good decision you made placing pic of the darling kittens right at the top. It’s what kept me reading as my head was exploding. Made it to the end. Fantasy for relief: Crawl into a box of innocent kittens.
PS re the kittens: Is the kitty in the lower right of the picture standing on her head, or did the house photographer stuff them into a smallish chair and shoot from above?
Thank you for your lucid, efficient explanation of the appeals process. Incidentally, we’ll all throw our bodies between the kittens and Kristi Noem.

for now
Kittens!! We need more kittens. Great analysis too. Looking forward to even stranger things.
This isn't ever going to fucking end, is it?
He'll die of old age before he's held accountable.
At least Death won’t be intimidated by his gaslighting, threats, projection, lies, etc., etc.
Well, he *could* die of old age at any time, right?
Am waiting impatiently for him to die. Naturally or not.

My disgust with FPOTUS and SCOTUS is bottomless, but … a bit of happiness at seeing your mama cat is still getting around and about.
We really do need to add a few more Justices, or kiss Democracy goodbye.
Kittens are the antidote to Trump poisoning

Not to mention that New York also has a Supreme Court. Except it's not supreme. The Appeals Court is NY's top court.

You kept all those kitties?! OK, so Tuli and his family get to stay, but Citizens United has got to go.
We kept two. The photo is when they were young.

I thought I recognized those pretty little babies. 😍
Good column. Thanks.
Should we start getting our escape pods ready? Whatever happens it ain’t gonna be pretty.

I’m guessing the kittens are lying in the bottom of an open box. So irresistably adorable….
The kittens were lying in a cat bed. I took the photo from above.
