“He’ll say things other people think…”. And therein lies the problem. Because he speaks for millions of like minded individuals, they are now liberated to aggressively act out his delusions and put the country at risk.

Something very similar was said about George Wallace. Maybe that's why some of us were never taken in by this analysis?

In Barton Gellman’s cover story for The Atlantic, “Trump’s Next Coup Has Already Begun”, he estimated the number of hard-core believers of The Big Lie at 21 million based on various reporting. theatlantic.com

I tend to agree. "Democracy" (whatever that means) is nowhere near as popular as affluent white Democrats think it is. To many white people "democracy" = white supremacist rule, and often white *male* supremacist rule. Understand that and it all starts to make sense.

Thing is, that's also true for those of us who've been excluded from the official version. A poster on my wall says THE HISTORY OF WOMEN IS A WORLD TO BE FOUGHT FOR. I'm not sure Orwell would have understood that.

i think you want a re-bision of history. Orwell was writing about people who substitute fiction for history.

Sure, but you were quoting it in December 2021, so I'm inferring that you think it's relevant now. It is, up to a point, but only with some qualification. (P.S. Was "re-bision" meant to be "re-vision," for does it have something to do with buffalo? ;-) )

Lucian, I don't know about you but I am salivating knowing that Meadows is in deep shit. Even drooling now that TFG’s taxes can and will be shared with Congress; DC’s AG has filed a lawsuit against Proud Boys and the other good ole boys club; and that Letitia James is ready to bounce on TFG. We are getting very close now and I too, can’t wait.

We are also getting very close to a violent civil war once the Big Bad Guys start getting locked up, and the Little Bad Guys unlock their gun cabinets. My hunting friends report that there are ammunition shortages all over this state (Michigan, which staged the insurrection dress rehearsal). The roll out of indictments must be coupled with a the roll out of a military defense plan for this country's democracy. Filling my bunker with chocolate, water, and TCinLA's (Thomas Cleaver"s) WWII books, the ones where the good guys win.

And when the light of scrutiny is upon them they scurry off into dark corners like the rats that they are. No wonder McCarthy didn't want an investigation. Fox News, the Trump WH propaganda arm is strangely silent. They don't want their viewers to see or hear any of this. I firmly believe we are in the midst of a civil war, a war against democracy using stealth and intrigue instead of guns........so far.

The moment of truth is coming. By the spring of 1974 about 65% 0f the adults in the country knew that Nixon had lied, obstructed, and engaged openly criminal acts. We are not at the spring just yet but wee are going to get there and you have to wonder, what will happen this time? Sen. McConnell's Federalist Society judges know what is expected of them . Five Republican judges on the Supreme Court know what's expected of them . Will a day come when 65% of the voters must decide, A Trump government of McConnell dictatorship, or a Biden led democratic government?

trouble is, there's one huge, obvious difference between 1974 and now. back then, if you followed the news, there was basically one big story and it couldn't be avoided. today, a huge number of people (some would say half the country...I wouldn't, but I can certainly be wrong) can get their own version(s) of that big story or even avoid it completely and still consider themselves well-informed. there's also the fact (which I know I keep mentioning, but which is huge and NEEDS to be mentioned all the time) that most people don't know how the government is supposed to work and don't know very much history at all. this is a very bad thing.

The other difference is that back then, Republicans were still sane, and put the country before Nixon.

Won't the Republicans run out the clock on all these worthy investigations? I keep hearing that -- and dreading that it may be true. But I don't know the facts. I haven't seen a single piece that dispassionately lays out the timetable between now and, say, next November's election. Perhaps there are too many variables to allow for authoritative analysis?

That‘s certainly what the Republicans are trying to do. And there’s no question that the Jan 6 committee hears the beats of time‘s winged chariot, as do the other investigators. But they cannot afford a single slip up, which points to the asymmetry between being able to commit the crime, and being held to account for it. My hope is that the criminals have managed to successfully skate on thin ice for so long that they have become even more careless. Looking forward to seeing Mr. Trump‘s taxes soon, however.

This is my fear exactly! I recall someone saying that we must be patient. The timing is precisely the issue. Time is fleeting here: every action is followed by a reaction which leads into another action followed by a reaction and so on…and so on…and so on! The only satisfaction is that the legal representatives will be busy and delay, delay, delay.

Maybe it's because I'm a fairly observant white lesbian feminist from way back, I'm not seeing much of a contradiction between public Trump and private Trump. The discrepancies (polite term) between what powerful white men say and what they do are pretty much business as usual. Just in general, white people are more likely to be taken in by the "say" because they/we aren't being screwed by the "do". Those of us who are not-white, not-male, not-straight, and/or not-middle-class-and-up have seen this up close and personal. We've at least suspected that there were an awful lot of white supremacists "in the closet," so to speak. Trump flushed them out of hiding, and I do have to say, I'm a bit shocked by how quickly many of those in power (not all of them Republican) caved to them. But it really isn't new. The battle lines were drawn after the Civil War. What *really* shocks me is how slow so many affluent white liberal and progressive men have been to acknowledge it.

Brian Kilmeade, Laura Ingraham, Donald Trump, Jr. and other Johnny-Come-Latelies should be embarrassed by their belated acknowledgement of Trump’s destructive performance on January 6. They have known and applauded the crazy shenanigans Trump has been spewing and promulgating during his entire presidency. They listened to his rally speeches and breathlessly paid homage to every slander, every lie, every crazy idea their hero spewed and promulgated during his entire presidency and throughout his days after losing the election. I contend that there is nothing they can do or say to redeem themselves at this late date; they should crawl into a dark corner and contemplate the morass they created.
