Wealthy, white and--don't forget-- FUNDAMENTALIST CHRISTIAN males....are the ones intent on destroying this country, with lots of help from not-so-wealthy white, fundie males and some self-loathing females.

Doesn't anyone remember that the key significance of the right to abortion was that it represented the right of a woman to her body as seperate from a man.. at the time there were myriad laws on the books limiting women's civil rights. Our rights continue to be limited when we lost the constitutional amendment declaring women to be free and equal to all men. Look in your vast files Lucian to refresh your memory Nancy Lloyd age 77

tRump was an illegitimate president; his Supreme Court selections are illegitimate—besides their lying under oath—and still, The Band Plays On. What has the FBI been hiding? They were supposed to be defending this country from enemies both inside and without, yet tRump was inaugurated despite all the corruption, mob connections and FLAUNTED ties to Putin.

And Comey—WHO got to him at the 11th hour before the election?

This Supreme Court is illegitimate, and yet we carry on …like Sheeple.

About your last sentence, in other words they are Republicans. You do have to give the minority three credit for hanging in there, especially Sotomayor for her eloquence. They've cornered all the honor and dignity that court retains.

So well explained but so sad to read. The saddest part is that none of these people know they are bad people. They all feel justified in saying and doing the things they do. whether it's all the stuff Lucian just described or making plans to take over the country completely and permanently. I know people who say the insurrection on Jan. 6 wasn't an insurrection but a justifiable protest of a wrong committed against them. Yes, in spite of count upon recounts, lawsuits after lawsuits they still believe Trumps lie that the election was stolen, even in those Republican controlled states with Republican voting officials who themselves voted for trump but happened to be honest. They were then labeled by Trump as traitors which triggered death threats against them and even their children. Their whole view of reality is skewed. You can't reason with them. They are not bright people. Look how many believe in quack cures for Covid over vaccination. and who believe masks and vaccinations are a kind of government control. Also that mainstream media are all in cahoots together with the whole health care industry. I'm not saying every Republican is crazy, but very few it seems have a balanced viewpoint.

I'm not a lawyer and I'm glad I'm not. But i took a business law class in b-school. What happened to the principle of stare decisis?

Given the stacked nature of the present Court and the apparent reluctance of President Biden to expand the court to be more representative of America, the only option for the apparently gutless Democrats is to kill the filibuster and start passing laws that don't depend on the partisan interpretations of 9 unelected lifetime appointees.

We're running out of time to keep our democracy.

After some thought, I agree that this *is* the biggest story of 2021, but at the same time I'm both depressed and outraged that there's so much competition for the "honor".

"They are radicals bent on a realignment of laws to protect those who are wealthy, white, and male and no one else".

This says it all. The Court is propounding the originalist interpretations of the Constitution. Do not forget that the "original" Constitution was written by white men of means, and "originally" only white men of means could participate politically, and vote. No Women, Native or African Americans, or the landless and otherwise those without means could participate. Indeed, the "original" elite were not just while men of means, but British men of means who demanded the so-called Rights of Englishmen pronounced in the late 17th century after the English Civil War. This was a tribal affair that positioned male landowning British colonials at the top of the hierarchy as economic liberalism was establishing itself in Great Britain, culminating in the full blown laissez faire capitalism of Adam Smith which was free from the control of the Crown, i.e. the Rights of Englishmen!" Consider the consequences of these "originalist" positions, and they were not pretty.

I believe there are enough women and men who don't hate women to vote against this travesty.

Terrifying. I’ve been wishing a better 2022 to all with whom I speak. Which is more of an empty platitude than I realized. You’ve laid it out very succinctly: Repugnicans at every level are putrid. I’m nauseous.

My hackles are up. Any time Texas abortion and our Supreme Court are mentioned, I kinda lose it. I certainly pray that Dems play hardball better as far as McConnell is concerned. Silencing him should be our goal as it would be effective against other noisy Repubs like Cruz, Rubio, Marjorie Three Names, Boebert, and the like.

I am hopeful that after we ascertain as to who (whom) financed the insurrection, the recent Supreme Court members might just start shaking in their boots. What goes around, comes around.

I agree. I believe that over the next few years this country will move closer to a civil war. The court is encouraging it by allowing states to pass and enforce laws that take away federal supremacy. Over time it will lead to a “divorce “. A very messy and violent divorce. If the autocratic right takes over Congress in the next elections it will escalate. The Democratic Party and the media needs to scream this message and strongly challenge those who continue to rip apart our republic.
