What would be interesting to know is if any of the GOP Senators were actually watching the presentation or Netflix on their phones..

I believe the reason trump did nothing for hours after the mob breached the Capitol was not only that he was enjoying the mayhem, he was actually hoping to see Pence, Pelosi, etc. captured and hanged. (What great tv!) Then he could indeed declare marital law. What a hideous thought.

Marital Law?

Thank you for saying it so graphically. How anyone can love this guy is beyond my ken. It’s racism and sexism. They love him and attack the Capitol and democracy because they want to continue forever their 4 glorious years of a President who makes racism, sexism, misogyny, anti-Semitism, gay bashing permissible and acceptable. Democracy is getting in the way of returning US society to an old social order which they want to live forever. Because (in their minds) isn’t it lovely if being white and male is the top of the food chain, it means you can push around and suppress women, POC and Asians and Jews etc etc, and gays, and on and on. If the Republican Senators were not secretly racist, sexist, anti-gay, they could not support Trump.

The House managers last night proved that Trump did zero to help the police during the hours they were attacked by the Maga Mob. His tweets show that he was only concerned with keeping his fantasy alive: that somehow the count could be stopped and he would remain in power. The result: one murdered police officer and many others with severe injuries - thanks to Trump. Will the GOP Senators choose to risk being branded as Maga Cop Killers for the rest of their lives along with Trump, the Maga Cop Killer president?

What we need to do is come up with some “stay home” or “boycott the final vote” campaign against the Republican clowns that tried to ignore the presentation. Something like “#StayHomeHawley” or “#BoycottTheFinalVote”, but we need to make it seem like it came from QAnon or someone similar. Y’know, “The Senate trial is bogus! They shouldn’t pay attention, they should just stay home!” If (say) 16 Republican Senators decline to vote, two-thirds of those voting becomes 56, not 67. 🤔😉😊

watching the excellently edited and prepared video yesterday and today is truly harrowing. hard to believe that any Republican could possibly vote against impeachment. The mind boggles at their cult-like following of Txxxp.

And trump really doesn't look at his "base" as being on his side. He merely considers the unwashed rabble as weakminded suckers whom he can direct to serve his narcissistic pleasures.

And the Senators and Congressmen whom he relies upon to vote for him? They themselves are pale versions of trump's self-centered and selfish persona, thinking only of their own ambitions and dire need for survival in their current posts.

10 to 11 years ago Trump ran his Obama Birth Certificate nonsense.

Remember "Some people are saying?"

No, asshole, YOU are saying!!!

He enrolled all those morons who he is controlling now.

Hitler had a 20 year run, more or less, Moron Fest will run for another 10 years...more or less!

Two takeaways from Lucian’s essay: (1) most all Republican senators’ skin is about thick as toilet paper (2) public service is anathema to them.

The House Managers need to bring in the Mother Emmanuel Choir to sing that as their closing argument.

Yeah....Trump is the 'name'...But it is really the Republican Senators, their principles, their morality, their integrity and their honesty that is on trial...And the American people are the jury.

Trump has two main character defects:

No empathy for others

No personal integrity

THE GORY GRANDEUR of DONALD TRUMP'S CRIME AGAINST AMERICA

I am feeling calmer than probably any time since the January 6 attack. I spent half the day yesterday watching the impeachment trial. Finally I am feeling vindicated, finally the American people are being shown what happened in all its gory grandeur.

For weeks, I have been dropping posts here and on HCR and Greg Olear with this link:

https://apnews.com/article/election-2020-donald-trump-capitol-siege-campaigns-elections-d14c78d53b3a212658223252fec87e99

There has been an edge of desperation. I have been upset and distressed that insufficient attention is being given to the causes of the January 6 riot, Trump's U.S. Capitol Attack. Up until this week, this one AP article has been the only news I could find which shone light into the roots of that criminal event.

And now, calling it a "criminal event" will not cause a single person on HCR to wonder what the hell that means. Here I doubt anyone would quibble with me, even before this week's impeachment trial.

One of the tortures of living in this world is knowing things that other people don't know or can't see. It makes one feel like a crazy person. So when my wife introduced me to Greg Olear and HCR, and when TC brought me here from HCR, it was like a draught of cool clean water to a person dying of thirst. It's an oasis.

I don't feel so alone. It's therapy. Good for my mental health and peace of mind.

I am feeling true, honest pride in my government. Until recently I have never been in love with the idea of flying an American flag, because I have never felt this much love for my government and for my fellow Americans. All that has changed. I have found a deep, profound, abiding love for the American democracy and its institutions that was always there, but was obscured by the smoke of politics, which I have often despised.

The staff people who work for the House impeachment managers are my heroes this week. They are informing the American people, and the world, of the true picture of what happened leading up to January 6. The full story is emerging.

Donald Trump is a world-class criminal. No, he has not actively been a genocidal maniac like some other criminals, and even that statement will be disputed due to the suffering and loss of life and severe financial hardship caused by the epidemic that he refused to fight. But he is a world-class criminal even despite that pandemic avoidance-of-duty argument, and now the entire world is seeing it.

For once I can breathe a preliminary sigh of relief.

I am not using that term rhetorically. I am actually breathing sighs of relief as I share my thoughts with you.

Now the only thing missing is common knowledge of Trump's active participation in promoting Kremlin policy. One thing at a time, I suppose.

I must be on your side since I'm a subscriber. However, it is very third-worldish to prosecute former government officials on account of their politics. Is this the way you want to take the country? If the republicans take the house in 2022, will they impeach Biden? Why not? Your heated rhetoric has made it possible.

Expand full comment

*My* heated rhetoric, Bob? I wouldn't have had cause to write these columns if Donald Trump hadn't used his own heated rhetoric in the two months previous to January 6 to whip up his supporters and send them to the Capitol to, and I'll quote him here "fight like hell" to "stop the steal" for him. I think you need to reassess whose heated rhetoric you should be so upset about.

Nice!!

In related news, finally we are seeing real live evidence of the disintegration of the GOP, something I have been expecting for some time. Now Romney and Kinzinger and Cassidy will have a place to go where they can avoid taking grief from Trumpsters. Check out this Reuters article (from HCR):
