While I always am impressed with your work, this essay was particularly outstanding. It nails the topsy-turvy world of Trumplandia, where an army of ignoramuses (from the Latin, literally "we do not know") disgorging half-consumed and ill-considered sound bites cynically fed to them by a deranged demagogue and American Pravda. If only they took the time to change the channel. Perhaps if they had been taught history in high school by an historian, rather than a football coach, they might have some grasp of the facts, or might have learned the critical thinking skills that might come to their aid in fending off the constant barrage of BS to which they are subjected. I digress. The destruction of the public schools has been a project 40-years in the making and, though german, is really a discussion for another day. In closing, my eyes still sting from the tears of rage that began in earnest on January 6, 2021—the apotheosis of the Reagan Revolution, which began the active derogation of our democratic republic—and your essay spoke eloquently to the injustice inherent in this perverse, inverted use of the notion of "patriotism."

Just watching that creep hump the flag was all it took to realize his love of country.
That's germane, not german.
